Chapter 53 -53 Proposing (Part 1)
“Ying’er… Ying’er…”
Deep in slumber after returning home, Zhu Qianying vaguely heard her mother’s voice.
So annoying!
Why won’t she even leave her alone in her dreams?
She is her daughter, not her savior, can she not bother her with every little thing?!
The incessant voice drilled into Zhu Qianying’s ears persistently, “Ying’er… wake up!” This time, her mother’s voice was accompanied by the sound of knocking at the door.
Zhu Qianying finally started to become somewhat conscious. Apparently, it wasn’t a dream.
“Mom, I’m not hungry, you guys eat, don’t worry about me!” Zhu Qianying assumed her mother was just calling her for dinner.
“No, Ying’er, Mr. and Mrs. Yan and young master Yan are here, they’re in the living room now.”
Upon hearing this unexpected news, Zhu Qianying jolted up from the bed. Her aching body hurt even more under the force, causing her to grit her teeth in pain.
“Mom, what did you say?”
Zhu Qianying thought she might have misheard, having just woken up.
“The Yan family of three are sitting in the living room, you should quickly wash up and come down to greet them, your father hasn’t come back yet.”
The voice of Chen Jing was noticeably flustered.
It wasn’t surprising though. She had always been timid and easily scared, and after more than twenty years, she still hadn’t learned how to handle the aunties of the Zhu Family. Not to mention the trio from the Yan family, each one with an imposing aura, it would be strange if she wasn’t nervous.
After a quick wash, Zhu Qianying changed into a light blue casual shirt and ankle pants and went downstairs.
“Hello, Uncle and Auntie!”
Zhu Qianying smiled and greeted Yan Bo and Mrs. Yan, and was immediately led by Mrs. Yan to sit next to her.
Yan Bo, who was originally sitting next to Mrs. Yan, had to give up his spot and sat next to Zhu Qianying.
Only then did Zhu Qianying find the time to glance at the wall clock. The hand of the clock pointed exactly at two.
So, had she slept all morning after coming back?
“Are you alright?” asked Yan, who Zhu Qianying had been deliberately ignoring.
Zhu Qianying turned her gaze back to him, offered a faint smile. In front of others, she, of course, had to exhibit a pleasant demeanor towards him.
“I’m fine, what could possibly happen to me?”
But why are you guys here, barging into my house in broad daylight? Is it a surprise inspection? Or have you suddenly realized that I, the fifth Miss from the Zhu Family, do not meet your esteemed standards?
Zhu Qianying had many questions in mind, but on the surface, she maintained a hospitable demeanor, getting up to refill the tea for the Yans.
Mrs. Yan, after hearing her son’s question, intently observed Zhu Qianying for a moment.
“Ying’er, are you feeling unwell, you look a bit pale?” She extended her hand to hold Zhu Qianying’s, gently patting the back of her hand.
Shaofen, who sat across them and was either greeting guests or watching the spectacle, replied even before Zhu Qianying could, “Mrs. Yan, you can rest assured, our Ying’er, if nothing else, is in excellent health, eats well, and sleeps well.”
Zhu Qianying lifted her eyes to give Shaofen a cold glance and was about to retort when Mrs. Yan patted the back of her hand, signaling her to keep quiet.
Then, in an unhurried manner, she spoke to Shaofen, “Of course, Ying’er is healthy. With Ah Jing, a mother with extraordinary culinary skills looking after her, she certainly should be. But, based on Mrs. Zhu’s remarks, could it be that all your children are not in good health? Or are they neither eating well nor sleeping well?”
Upon hearing Mrs. Yan’s words, Shaofen’s face instantly changed.
As an official wife of the Zhu Family, she was accustomed to her high and mighty demeanor, when has she ever been criticized so bluntly?

But now, she didn’t dare to refute a single word, because Mrs. Yan isn’t just the lady of the Yan Family, but also the matriarch of the Tong Family. Where would Shaofen dare to offend such a figure?
“Hehe, Mrs. Yan is absolutely right, Ah Jing’s cooking skills are indeed superb, she fattens up all of us in the Zhu Family.”
If she couldn’t offend Mrs. Yan, why would it make it impossible for her to vent her anger on Chen Jing?
This time, before Mrs. Yan could speak, Zhu Qianying said, “Auntie, you’re overestimating my mother. You’re making it sound as if without her, the Zhu family would starve.”
Shaofen’s face turned even more grim and with furrowed brows, she glared at Zhu Qianying, “Ying’er, how could you say that?”
Had it been any other day, Shaofen would have erupted in anger by now. But due to the presence of the Yan family, she couldn’t afford to lose her composure. Her tone, however, was full of reprimand and discontent.
“Mrs. Yan, Ying’er is still young and sometimes she speaks without thinking. Please kindly forgive her.” After reprimanding Zhu Qianying, Shaofen put on a face of an elder, apologizing to Mrs. Yan.
Do you think Mrs. Yan would take her superficial gestures seriously?
“Mrs. Zhu, I think what Ying’er said is not wrong. Ah Jing, in the Zhu Family, holds the same status as you, right? She takes care of Ying’er because she’s Ying’er’s mother. It’s not quite reasonable for her to have to serve you all as well. Could it be that the Zhu family can’t even afford to hire a chef and the lady of the Zhu family has to cook? If word gets out, it wouldn’t be good for Mr. Zhu’s reputation, would it?”
Mrs. Yan’s words, were like an invisible slap repeatedly smacking onto Shaofen’s face.
And Zhu Qianying, finally understood that Mrs. Yan’s defense for her wasn’t just lip service, but she really did support her with her actions.
Of course, she felt touched.
But in front of so many people, even if she was moved, it wouldn’t be appropriate to show it. So, she scratched Mrs. Yan’s palm with the fingers of the hand she was clutching.
Mrs. Yan winked at her, then turned to Chen Jing and said, “Ah Jing, we all know that it hasn’t been easy for you raising Ying’er. But Old Yan and I truly like Ying’er, which is why we have taken the liberty to come here today to earnestly request your consent for Ying’er to marry our son, Xiao Han.”
At these words from Mrs. Yan, not just Chen Jing and Shaofen, but even Zhu Qianying, was taken aback.
Initially, Zhu Qianying should have been happy. After all, she had painstakingly participated in the selection just so she could marry Yan Bo, allowing her, her mother and sister to escape the torment of living at the Zhu family, right?
But what should have been a cold transaction, had been filled with warmth due to Mrs. Yan’s honorable actions.
A pang of guilt surged in Zhu Qianying’s heart.
As for herself and Yan Bo, it didn’t matter how far they went with this agreement because they both knew it was a transaction.
But it was different with Mrs. Yan. It seemed that she genuinely held certain expectations for her.
This expectation and affection made Zhu Qianying feel undeserving.
“Auntie…”
Zhu Qianying tried to say something, but was hastily interrupted by Mrs. Yan, who had been watching her closely.
“Ying’er, Auntie knows that you’ve been wronged, and this is very abrupt. In such a serious matter as a marriage proposal, it should have been Xiao Han who approached you first, but Old Yan and I were a little impatient, so we took the initiative to propose the marriage on our own.”
