Chapter 36: Chapter 36 I am very angry now
“What’s wrong, Li?”
Sheila asked with some curiosity.
Li Ang made a quieting gesture, slightly lifted his neck, and carefully confirmed again before he heard the sound of a window being moved, which then completely disappeared.
Li Ang wanted to tell himself it was just the wind moving the window, but he knew all the windows in Sheila’s home were sliding windows, which could not possibly be blown open by the wind.
“It seems like a window at the back of your house was pushed open.”
“Yes, I’m not sure, but I also thought I heard a sound just now.”
Sheila’s voice trembled slightly, for she could be a dazzling beauty or a mature professional, adept at mingling with various social circles.
But in this situation, as a woman living alone, she inevitably felt afraid.
“Are your back windows locked?”
“Maybe, I think I opened them for ventilation this afternoon, I don’t know, oh my goodness, what should we do?”
Sheila clung tightly to Li Ang’s arm, and he could even feel her heart pounding.
“It’s okay, don’t panic; call the police first.”
Having experienced significant events like crossing over, Li Ang, although nervous, could still manage to stay calm and think things through.
“Also, do you have any weapons at home? We need to protect ourselves.”
As Sheila fumbled for her phone, she pointed to a cabinet beside her and replied:
“There’s a baseball bat up there, I don’t know if it’ll be of any help.”
She now deeply regretted why she hadn’t obtained a gun license before.
Li Ang nodded, tiptoed to the cabinet, grabbed the baseball bat, then turned back and took Sheila’s arm, saying:
“Let’s go into the room and lock the door.”
Li Ang wasn’t foolish enough to wander into the house with a baseball bat to face an unknown enemy, which would be no different than presenting himself on a platter.
The best course of action was to hide in a room and wait for the police to arrive.
If they were lucky, nothing would happen, and if not, it would just be a loss of some possessions.
After calling the police from the room, Sheila took out her phone and launched an app that instantly displayed the scenes from her backyard and front yard.
After a brief panic, Sheila also temporarily calmed down.
She opened the surveillance playback and fast-forwarded it.
The worst-case scenario unfolded as they saw in the video that indeed, two black men in shorts and T-shirts had snuck into her room from the window in the backyard.
The good news was, they did not seem to be carrying any weapons, although it was possible that they had small weapons concealed in their waistbands.
Moreover, the men’s walk was unstable, as if they had just been drinking.
This slightly eased the anxiety Li Ang was feeling.
The less prepared the intruders appeared, the more likely it was a spontaneous act.
By now, it was nine o’clock at night, and the sky was completely dark.
In this sparsely populated town, not a soul could be seen on the streets.
Having just called the police, it would take at least twenty minutes for them to arrive.
Li Ang hesitated but decided against asking Charles and Uncle Wilson to come over and help.
At this time, holding the fort was the safest bet; there was no need to complicate matters.
If one of the intruders had a weapon and someone got hurt, he would regret it too late.
“Li, what should we do now?”
Sheila’s voice carried a hint of a sob, and her whole body seemed to hang on Li Ang.
“It’s okay, we’ll just stay quiet here, do nothing, and make no noise.”
Li Ang gently stroked Sheila’s back, trying to comfort her.
When they first entered the room, he had made sure not to turn on the bedroom lights, creating the illusion that the room was empty to buy them time.
Of course, it was just to buy time, since their lights had been on earlier, and the oven in the kitchen was still on.
Meanwhile, chairs and a bedside table were moved to block the door.
The room was so silent at that moment, that the only sounds audible were the breathing of the two people inside and the chirping of insects outside.
“Thud! Thud!”

Even though the sound was very faint, it was still possible to hear someone climbing the stairs.
Li Ang could feel Sheila clinging to him even tighter, a pity that now was not the time to think about that.
“Click!”
That was the sound of the guest bedroom door being turned open.
And then came the noise of cabinet doors and drawers being opened.
About two minutes later, footsteps approached the master bedroom door, the sound becoming clearer and clearer, and Li Ang could even make out that the two intruders were wearing slippers.
Li Ang felt like he was almost unable to breathe.
Not from nervousness, but because Sheila was squeezing him.
Soon, the footsteps stopped outside the door, and Sheila let out a slight sigh of relief, finally easing the strength in her arms a little.
In the moonlight, sweat marks could even be seen on Li Ang’s back.
She whispered in Li Ang’s ear:
“Have they gone somewhere else?”
Without a sound, Li Ang just shook his head and gripped the baseball bat in his hand even tighter.
“Click!”
The doorknob of the room they were in suddenly jolted violently.
Fortunately, they had locked it, and this attempt failed to open it.
“Bang!”
The bedroom door was kicked forcefully, making the whole room seem to tremble.
“My sweetheart, we’ve found you!”
Outside, that deliberately sharp and thin voice echoed.
“Ah!”
Sheila behind let out a terrified scream.
She enveloped Li Ang like an octopus, clinging to him.
Li Ang had no choice but to whisper back:
“Miss Sheila, a scream will do, there’s no need to cling to me like this.”
“Alright, alright.”
Sheila released Li Ang and huddled behind him.
Now, in Sheila’s home, Li Ang was the only one she could rely on, so she naturally listened to him obediently.
He had intentionally made Sheila scream in terror to relax the intruders’ vigilance, creating the illusion that Sheila was alone at home.
As Li Ang had predicted, Xiao Hei at the door, upon hearing Sheila’s scream, became even more excited.
“My sweet darling, don’t worry, I’ll be in there in a moment, hahaha.”
The door-kicking intensity outside grew fiercer, and although the quality of the door was not bad, Li Ang estimated it could hold for at most one more minute.
He gestured to Sheila to hide near the window, while he stealthily moved to the door.
In such a situation, escaping was no longer an option; they had to face it head-on.
“Bang!”
The overloaded door finally gave in to a kick.
The two intruders immediately saw Sheila tucked by the window, trembling.
And with no weapon in Sheila’s hands, the scant amount of reason left in their minds was completely wiped clean.
