Cultivating in the Wizard World-Chapter 336 - 302: Phase 1 Complete (Double-Length)
Jeming and his squad successfully landed on the surface of the Steel City.
However, this did not signify the end of the battle; rather, it was like provoking a giant hornet’s nest.
The Wizard Squad Jeming belonged to didn’t have time to observe their surroundings before the screeching sound of metal grinding and the hum of Energy Weapons charging sounded from all directions.
The surfaces of the towering skyscrapers, covered with metallic exteriors, suddenly opened countless differently sized gaps.
The next moment, like a flood of ants bursting through a dam, creatures of varied forms and species swarmed out!
Some resembled upright lizards clad in crude metal Armor; others were multi-eyed arthropods wielding weapons that combined biology and machinery; more terrifyingly were phantoms made entirely of Energy, emitting mind-disturbing screeches...
Their sole target was the Wizard Squad located in the center of this street block!
"Cover fire! Clear the surroundings!" The leading Fifth Level Wizard reacted swiftly.
With a wave of his hand, a searing lava beam swept out, instantly vaporizing the foremost group of enemies and slicing through a large section of the buildings ahead.
The other wizards showcased their abilities too, with ice, thunder, corrosive acid, Psychic Shock...
Various displays of Witchcraft exploded in the narrow streets, and swathes of bizarre creatures fell like harvested wheat.
The radiant [Great Light Appearance] behind Jeming lit up again, and a dense Energy Barrage repeatedly plowed through the surging tide of enemies, leaving charred remains scattered everywhere.
At first contact, feeling the mostly just Second Level Energy fluctuations from the opposing force and noticing the diverse features distinct to different life forms, Jeming immediately understood the origins of these enemies.
"It’s the Vassal Army!" he said in a deep voice.
The so-called Vassal Army is a force composed of Indigenous People from conquered planes, integrated into a unified military.
The Giant Spirit Realm had conquered dozens of planes, so possessing a Vassal Army was expected.
However, the Wizard Civilization itself preferred utilizing completely controlled, custom-designed expendable troops, which is why Jeming hadn’t considered this possibility at first.
Compared to the "high-quality" expendable troops, meticulously designed and often stronger than their masters by one to two Levels, these Vassal Army members were pathetically easy to defeat.
But... their numbers were utterly terrifying!
The Giant Spirit Realm was so vast that its land area might rival the surface area of Saturn, a gas giant planet Jeming once knew.
Despite the wizards having split into small groups of hundreds or thousands fighting dispersedly, attacking only a fraction of the Giant Spirit Realm’s dominion,
the defense zone assigned to Jeming’s less than a hundred-member squad was still vast, equivalent to a medium-sized province from Jeming’s past life!
Within this vast region, the enemy seemed endless.
Ten minutes!
Only a ten-minute fierce battle!
Jeming estimated roughly that the number of Vassal Army troops killed by their squad had reached a staggering ten billion!
Yet, as far as the eye could see, enemies continued to roar out ceaselessly from the seemingly bottomless metal skyscrapers.
They trampled over their companion’s corpses, charging madly forward.
They built walls with bodies, soaked the metal ground with blood and Energy, without any reduction in their assault.
For a moment, this elite Wizard Squad was caught in an awkward predicament.
Looking up, the wizards’ Floating Fortress and main expendable troop army pursued the Giant Spirit Realm’s regular army relentlessly, holding an absolute advantage.
But on the ground, these wizards, who should have dominated the battlefield, found themselves embarrassingly pressed by the massive Vassal Army of lower Levels.
They could only hold a point, continuously expending Wizard Power and Spiritual Power in inefficient clearing efforts.
This did not mean the wizards were weak. On the contrary, it reflected the Wizard Civilization’s unique war philosophy—reverence for leveraging power with knowledge.
They didn’t pursue extreme physical evolution but instead devoted energy to understanding and utilizing the world’s Law.
The expendable troop army was an extension of this philosophy—a war tool.
For the wizards, the expendable troop army and Witchcraft alike were manifestations of knowledge and resource condensation, representing the leverage of power by knowledge, and it’s normal for their combined battle power to exceed the wizard themselves.
Thus appeared the "bizarre" scene where the expendable troop army suppressed the enemy’s main force while the wizards themselves got bogged down by enemy rabble.
After using another wave of Energy Barrage to create a temporarily clear space ahead and seeing more enemies surging like a fountain from the building gaps behind them, Jeming frowned deeply.
"This can’t go on." he realized.
The opponent’s goal was blatant—to exhaust their power with these cheap and almost endless Vassal Army forces.
To break this stalemate, the only way was to locate and destroy the enemy’s troop delivery base or Transmission Node!
Otherwise, sooner or later, they’d be drowned in this quagmire of flesh and metal.
He looked up and met the gaze of the leader Fifth Level Wizard and the two Fourth Level Wizards.
In their eyes, Jeming saw the same judgment and decision.
"Clear the line of sight! Level these annoying ruins and metal boxes!" The Fifth Level Wizard decisively gave new orders, his voice piercing through the intense sounds of explosions reaching each team member’s ears clearly.
Without hesitation, Jeming raised his hand and fired a highly condensed Energy Bullet toward the slanted sky.
