Chapter 30: Chapter 30: The Old Lady Dies of Anger

Upon the Old Madam’s command, the most formidable maids from Fushou Courtyard immediately set off for Haitang Courtyard.

Guarding the gate was Granny Liu.

She had served in the Lu Family for many years and recognized everyone close to the Old Madam, especially the intimidating Granny Zhou leading the charge.

She hurriedly greeted them with courtesy: "Elder Sister, what wind blows you here today?"

Granny Zhou, full of airs, snapped, "Out of the way!"

Granny Liu’s smile froze, but she didn’t budge.

Granny Zhou impatiently glared at her: "Didn’t you hear me? Move aside!"

Granny Liu replied, "May I ask what brings Elder Sisters to Haitang Courtyard so early?"

Granny Zhou barked, "Do I need to explain myself to a mere gatekeeper like you? Scram!"

"What’s all the racket about this early in the morning?"

Nanny Wan slammed the half-washed garment in her basin back into the water!

Only then did she remember it wasn’t her own clothing but the Young Madam’s. Panicking, she scurried to pick it up and clumsily dusted it off.

Afterward, with an exasperated expression, she came to the gate and told Granny Zhou, "This is the Eldest Young Madam’s courtyard. If you want to enter, did the Eldest Young Madam grant permission?"

Granny Zhou coldly sneered, "Nanny Wan, Granny Liu, you’ve both grown quite bold, haven’t you? Even daring to block me!"

Nanny Wan akimboed her hands: "So what if I block you?"

Granny Zhou straightened her back and declared, "I am the Eldest Young Master’s wet nurse! He was raised on my milk, one mouthful at a time! Even in his courtyard, I’m invited in with utmost respect. Is the Eldest Young Madam more esteemed than the Eldest Young Master now?"

"Then why don’t you go to the Eldest Young Master’s courtyard? What’re you doing at our Haitang Courtyard?"

"You—"

Granny Zhou was livid. Seeing that she was about to be dragged into circles by Nanny Wan’s words, she decided not to waste energy on arguing and attempted to force her way in.

But Nanny Wan didn’t take kindly to such antics and shoved her down to the ground.

That push ignited a full-on brawl between both sides.

Granny Liu hesitated at first, wary since people from the Old Madam’s courtyard carried a different weight compared to Lin Wan’er’s people.

But seeing how fiercely Nanny Wan fought, she gritted her teeth and charged in to help.

The Old Madam’s maids got beaten until they fled with their heads covered. Realizing she was losing, Granny Zhou shamefully ran to the outer courtyard to round up some stable hands and guards—over a dozen of them!

Nanny Wan and Granny Liu were promptly subdued.

Granny Zhou led the group of stable hands into Haitang Courtyard.

"Where’s the silver hidden?" Granny Zhou made a sweeping gesture. "Search the place!"

"What’s with the racket? Isn’t it nearly time for breakfast?"

Tan’er emerged from a room, yawning and stretching lazily.

A tall, burly guard walked up to her. Seeing her unfamiliar face, he asked, "Are you a maid from Haitang Courtyard?"

Tan’er nodded. "You came here for what? To deliver breakfast?"

The guard ignored her question and coldly asked, "Where does the Eldest Young Madam keep her silver?"

Tan’er raised her hand and pointed toward Meng Qianqian’s room: "There."

The guard, seeing her cooperation, didn’t bother her and turned to walk away.

But just as he stepped over the threshold, a petite hand suddenly landed on his shoulder.

He shivered all over.

Tan’er said, "Did I say you could go in?"

The guard was stunned, glancing at the spot three yards away where Tan’er had been standing earlier.

When did this girl get so close? He hadn’t noticed a thing!

"Let go!"

"As you wish."

She released her grip.

In the next instant, she sidestepped, lifted her leg, and kicked the guard straight over the high courtyard wall!

Everyone else didn’t catch what had happened. They only saw a shadow fly overhead without so much as a scream, scaring birds from the treetops into frantic flight.

It took a moment for the crowd to snap out of it. Then, all eyes turned to Tan’er.

Tan’er earnestly asked, "Which one of you came to deliver breakfast?"

Was this maid a fool?

The group exchanged looks before two of the stable hands nearest Tan’er stepped toward her.

Tan’er’s gaze swept over the last man’s empty hands, and her face darkened as she clenched her fists. "None of you came to deliver breakfast, yet you’re all noisy enough to wake me up. Now I’m mad!"

She swung her fists—bam, bam!—and the two stable hands were sent flying with no chance to retaliate!

Everyone was stunned.

Granny Zhou took a step back. "Y-y-you... what’re you standing there for? Seize this maid already!"

It was over... Nanny Wan shut her eyes, unable to bear watching anymore.

Thud!

A body landed heavily beside her.

"Tan’er—oh, not her."

Thud!

Another one crashed down.

"Tan’er again—wait, no."

"Tan—"

Still tied up, Nanny Wan calmly lay on the ground, wide-eyed, staring at the ever-growing pile of sprawling stable hands before her.

Soon, only Granny Zhou remained.

Granny Zhou turned tail and ran!

"You’re the noisiest of all!"

"Stop this instantly!"

With a deep, stern voice, Lu Xingzhou appeared at Haitang Courtyard’s entrance.

Granny Zhou, as if spotting a savior, wept loudly and darted to hide behind him.

Lu Xingzhou glanced around with cold eyes and demanded, "What’s going on?"

Granny Zhou exaggeratedly recounted her "mission" to retrieve the silver.

Granny Liu quickly explained, "Master! It was Granny Zhou who started the fight first by bringing people!"

Tan’er stepped forward and asked Lu Xingzhou, "And who are you?"

Nanny Wan whispered in a small voice, "He’s the Eldest Young Madam’s father-in-law."

"Father-in-law?" Tan’er gave Lu Xingzhou a once-over. "Handsome features—you had such a bright future—why’d you go get castrated?"

Lu Xingzhou’s face darkened.

Nanny Wan was so horrified she wanted to die. "Not that kind of ’father-in-law’! I meant father-in-law as a parent, not a eunuch!"

Tan’er said to Nanny Wan, "Speak louder, I can’t hear you!"

"Tan’er."

Meng Qianqian arrived with Ban Xia in tow.

Tan’er’s eyes lit up. "Sister!"

The Old Madam also showed up.

When she took in the scene before her, she could hardly believe her eyes.

Though the two Haitang Courtyard maids lay bound on the floor, Granny Zhou’s group fared no better—they were beaten purple and blue, with ripped coats, and even had their hair yanked out in tufts!

Not to mention the dozen or so stable hands and guards sprawled across the ground, unable to stand...

"Who did this?"

The Old Madam thundered.

Tan’er said, "I did!"

The Old Madam was startled. "You?"

Lu Xingzhou’s suspicious gaze fell on Tan’er.

Meng Qianqian said to Lu Xingzhou, "Father, ever since I was abducted, I’ve been plagued by nightmares. I thought it wise to keep a capable maid by my side, so I purchased Tan’er from the agency yesterday." frёewebnoѵel.ƈo๓

The Old Madam huffed, "That doesn’t justify attacking people in the estate!"

Meng Qianqian calmly replied, "Grandmother, Granny Zhou led over ten men into my courtyard without regard for my reputation. If Tan’er hadn’t dealt with them, my name would’ve been ruined. It’s one thing if I’m disgraced, but what if it implicated my husband, you, or the entire Lu Family? Should we hold Granny Zhou accountable, or should the blame lie with you for instructing her?"

The Old Madam was so taken aback she had no retort.

She looked to Lu Xingzhou.

Lu Xingzhou didn’t immediately punish Tan’er.

Meng Qianqian knew her father-in-law all too well—he was selfish to his core and valued reputation above all else. He’d sacrifice anything for it.

Lu Xingzhou said, "Granny Zhou, you have served faithfully for years. Now that you’re older, it’s not suitable for you to continue working."

Granny Zhou’s face fell. "Master!"

The Old Madam was livid. Pointing at Tan’er, she exclaimed, "This maid beat people up, and instead of dismissing her, you’re sending away Xiao-ge’er’s wet nurse? Are you trying to anger me to death?"

Lu Xingzhou said, "Mother—"

The Old Madam clutched her chest dramatically. "So you think I’m old—useless—just a burden—"

Tan’er crossed her arms and muttered, "Want to be young again? That’s easy. Go to the Grand Commander in the Capital City, and I guarantee, in the blink of an eye, you’ll become his grandson!"

"You—"

The Old Madam fainted from rage!
