Contracted To You-Chapter 71: Evie’s family
But Ezra was contemplating marriage with her—so soon? Thought Evie, as he pulled her into a hug and planted a kiss on the side of her head.
No, it wasn’t a bad idea. Her heart raced at the prospect.
Mrs. Thorne, she mused with a smile touching her lips. How would it feel for people to refer to her by Ezra’s last name?
She would be able to call him husband; she’d be free to touch him anytime and anywhere, without restraint.
And he would touch her too, calling her his wife.
Ezra and she would have plenty of children, and she would carry every one of his babies, while they would call her mom and him dad.
As she leaned into his arms, her thoughts began to swirl, her cheeks flushed pink at the very notion of it all.
Ezra wasn’t just any man; he was a treasure. She felt grateful to have found him.
Their paths had crossed that day at the bar where he proposed their deal, and that was the moment it all began.
Evie hadn’t realized that her fate would intertwine with someone like him, and she relished the connection.
Unlike other men who rushed things, Ezra took his time with her; yet, for this, he was prepared to marry her before making love.
Evie had remained untouched, a choice she fiercely defended, and Ezra had taken her first kiss.
He would be her first in everything, and she wouldn’t have it any other way.
Ezra noticed that the woman in his arms had calmed down.
She was no longer seething, avoiding his gaze; instead, she leaned into him. "Are you still mad, Evie?" he asked, his voice soft, his breath grazing her ear, making her shiver.
She shook her head against his chest.
How could she remain angry after what he had expressed? He cared for her and their future, and she felt nothing but gratitude.
"Can we go to bed now?" Ezra asked.
She met his gaze, swallowing, and wondered, "To relax, and possibly sleep?" he clarified, indicating that they weren’t continuing what they were doing before.
Ezra’s body had calmed down, and Evie felt no lingering urges; any lust had transformed into something serene, sweet, and warm in her heart.
"Sure." Evie’s voice was soft as they made their way to the bed.
The night wore on, with rain pouring down relentlessly.
Janet had mentioned that the rain wouldn’t stop until morning, and it seemed her words rang true.
The place was cozy as Ezra and Evie lay on the bed, facing each other, their gazes filled with affection.
After a moment of silence, Ezra seized the opportunity to ask questions he had been longing to know.
He wanted to understand Evie before they married—gaining insight into her life.
"Are you the only child?" Ezra inquired.
Evie shook her head, her blue eyes locking onto his dark ones.
"I have one sibling, a brother," she clarified.
"His name is Keith, and he lives with my dad," Evie continued, noticing his curiosity, especially after he had met her mom and now seemed eager to learn more about her family.
"My parents separated; Keith opted to stay with Dad."
"And you chose to stay with your mom," Ezra inferred, recognizing the pattern. Evie nodded, confirming his assumption.
"I felt pity for her. Their relationship was rocky, and ultimately it failed, forcing them to part ways," Evie said softly, reflecting on her own family’s separation.
They used to be together, seemingly loving, and life appeared peaceful on the surface. She used to think her parents were handling things well because they didn’t often argue in front of the kids.
But the reality was hidden behind closed doors, and eventually, they could no longer keep it from the children. That’s when Evie realized something was seriously wrong.
She was young then, and her brother was even younger.
When her father left, he took Keith with him, leaving Evie to stay with her mother.
Her mother cried intensely, but ultimately, there was nothing anyone could do to change the situation.
"I visit them sometimes; they’re doing well," Evie stated, a genuine smile breaking through. It’s true; she makes an effort to check on her brother and father. She misses them, of course, and her mother visits Keith whenever she can.
It’s pleasant, but it’s not the same as being a complete family.
Ezra noticed the sadness lingering in Evie’s eyes, despite her attempt to cover it with a smile. "I’m glad they’re doing well," he said, then reached for her hand resting by her side. Evie’s blue eyes held his gaze as he pressed a gentle kiss to the back of her hand.
She smiled softly. "You deserve to be happy, Evie, and I’m going to make sure you have nothing to worry about from now on," Ezra declared, his words wrapping around her like a warm embrace, soothing the pain that had been hidden for far too long.
"Thank you," Evie whispered, her eyes glistening with gratitude for his kindness and gentleness, but she quickly blinked back the tears.
"What about you, Ezra?" Evie leaned in, her curiosity palpable.
"What do you mean?" Ezra responded, intrigued.
"You’re the only child, right?" she asked, noticing him nod.
"How’s it with your parents? They must pamper you as the only son," she teased, her tone light.
And she was right; he indeed had loving parents.
Maren was a nurturing mother, and his father was equally affectionate. They showered him with love and provided him with everything he desired. Ezra grew up enveloped in their warmth, which made it hard for him to understand the depth of Evie’s struggles with her broken family.
His parents cherished him to the point of obsession. After trying for years to have a child, Ezra was their miracle and they would go to any lengths for him.
Even to the extent of covering up a significant mistake.
A.N:
Hello, lovely readers.
I think I’ve asked before if y’all prefer shorter Chapters to longer Chapters. There hasn’t been any response, so I’ll take it as y’all are okay with this change. I do hope that we can communicate better than this.
Thank you.
