Contract Marriage: Abusive Love with Mr.CEO-Chapter 458 - 242: Stealing Him Back 1
It was only at this moment that Rebecca Quentin understood. Howard Geoffrey had once told her that her father’s death was unexpected to him, and this turned out to be true.
So, to put it simply, her father’s death was largely a guilt-ridden suicide!
Mrs. Geoffrey was indeed the person who pressured her father into making the decision to commit suicide, but can anyone really say that her father’s death was entirely unjust?
After a moment of silence, Mrs. Geoffrey continued, "After Alexander Quentin died, my mind settled, but at that time, I did not sensitively connect Howard’s divorce with Alexander. Years later, Howard returned to New York, and I saw that after his divorce, he got together with Christine Quinn. I was very angry, as Christine Quinn at the time, in my eyes, was like a pair of worn-out shoes. That’s why I came to you. I liked you at first sight, so I always tried to match you with Howard, but I didn’t understand why Howard detested it so much. It wasn’t until later that I realized you were Alexander Quentin’s daughter... I had to oppose your relationship with Howard, not only because I did not want to see the daughter of Alexander Quentin and Vivian Lindsey become my daughter-in-law, but also because I felt guilty, fearing that you would seek revenge after learning the cause of your father’s death. So I treated you with the utmost hostility and repeatedly warned Howard... But things went beyond my expectations. I gradually discovered that Howard’s concern for you went far beyond my imagination. Despite my best efforts to prevent it, and Howard appeared to give up on you, what I saw was his loneliness and solitude when you were not around. I couldn’t bear to see my child in such pain, so I tried to let go of my hatred and hoped that Howard would bring you back. But Howard didn’t agree. I never understood why he didn’t agree until one day I inadvertently saw some documents in Howard’s study. All of those documents were records of my conversations with people during my investigation of Alexander Quentin. And at the end of the line of conversations I had with private detectives, there glaringly was the record of my call with Alexander Quentin..."
In other words, Howard had long found out that Alexander’s death was related to Mrs. Geoffrey, that it was Mrs. Geoffrey who directly pressured Alexander Quentin to death.
Rebecca Quentin finally understood everything...
No wonder Howard had been so conflicted for so long, no wonder he only came to her after she got pregnant, no wonder he said the pregnancy was the opportunity for them to be together...
It turned out, he was always afraid that one day, she would find out that her father’s death was related to his mother.
But, why didn’t he tell her the truth?
Once knowing it was his mother, it would have been a thousand times better for her than now...
Rebecca Quentin’s face was pale, and she stammered, "I don’t understand..."
Mrs. Geoffrey had already guessed Rebecca Quentin’s thoughts, "You don’t understand why he didn’t tell you about this?"
Rebecca Quentin gazed blankly at Mrs. Geoffrey.
Mrs. Geoffrey replied, "Because if he told you about this, it would inevitably make it impossible for you and I to establish a genuine mother-in-law and daughter-in-law relationship for a lifetime... And Howard, growing up in a dark environment, yearned for family harmony. He couldn’t give up either one of us for the other. He selfishly wanted to keep this matter a mystery forever, even though he knew it would eventually come out one day..."
"Then why, after the unavoidable explosion of this matter, did he still not wish to tell me the truth?"
"This is also my fault..."
Rebecca Quentin couldn’t understand why.
Mrs. Geoffrey spoke softly, "I am too selfish; I feared bearing such a mistake, afraid of going to prison, so I never dared to admit to you about your father, until I saw you taking abortion pills..."
"Because you saw me taking ’abortion pills,’ you chose to confess."
Mrs. Geoffrey nodded, "I confessed not only because I didn’t want you and Howard to have no future, but most importantly, because I never truly had peace of mind over the years..."
Mrs. Geoffrey’s words were straightforward, and Rebecca Quentin easily understood.
Mrs. Geoffrey went to confess because she was "forced" by Rebecca, which angered her... but he had no idea that it was all a misunderstanding.
Perhaps that is why he was unwilling to tell her the truth when she asked him about the matter.
In his view, her emotions were that intense. Upon learning the cause of her father’s death related to him, she could "unhesitantly" give up her child, and knowing it involved Mrs. Geoffrey, she might stop at nothing to send his mother to prison...
