Chapter 49: Last line

’And I don’t even know who the hell this person is? I have no idea how much he makes,’ Eldora thought, with a bead of sweat dropping from his head.

It had been years since he had last felt that way.

To the others, they were watching a fun battle where they knew who was going to lose.

But to him, he knew this was a fight of financial literacy.

The winner wasn’t who came out with the product, but who came out without losing much.

Eldora knew he had to be careful with Caleb.

For all he knew, the person on the other end could be a competitor who wanted to use a bid war and slowly deceive him into spending stupidly.

Now he even regretted shooting the price up to a million in the first place.

Seeing how smart he was, he had to be careful not to fall into any plots the boy had in his mind.

So he had to be careful when increasing the price of the item.

Caleb, on the other hand, had no idea how Eldora thought so highly of him.

Caleb was still in fear, and the reason for that was the system notification that appeared.

{Mission penalty alert!}

{The host has dragged mission till the last item and is currently bidding against a billionaire as stated by the mission... If host fails to get the item, fifty percent slash would be taken from host net worth.}

Good luck (•‿•)

As usual, the system wasn’t in any way merciful.

’Fifty percent cut!’ That was simply throwing him back to stage one!

Climbing up would even be more difficult.

This wasn’t optional in any way.

He didn’t know how he was going to do it.

He had to win the bid against Eldora at all costs!

{49.5 million}

Caleb took mental notes of the amount of money he had left.

Every penny counted, and he had to drag on for as long as he could.

’Thankfully, Eldora isn’t shooting up the price like before... But then, how do I win against him...’

To defeat Eldora was very tasking.

And he didn’t just have to think of that, but he also had to consider the fact that what he was currently bidding on was an X card!

How it had come, they had no idea.

The only person who could have a clue about it was Julia, who was the one running the auction.

And Caleb couldn’t help but ask her, "Any idea how the card found its way to this place?" he asked.

Julia frowned as she had been thinking about the answer to the question for quite some time.

"Honestly, I have no idea... I wasn’t the one who directly accepted all these items for auction... But I did get notified about the items before they were brought in," she replied, pausing for a long minute as though trying to remember something.

"They did inform me of there being a cursed card brought into the house... But I never had any idea that it was an X card, and I never bothered to check either."

"According to them, the card had been held in tight containment and under strict watch for some time now... Until they decided to let it out for auction," she added, remembering as much information as she could about the item in question.

"The issue isn’t about where the card was before. The issue is that the card is here now. Won’t X come for it?" Naya chipped in.

It was a matter that concerned all three of them.

For the past two days, there was no info on anything related to X, and then suddenly a card from them popped up in the auction.

The card was definitely going to bring trouble, and they all knew it would.

"She’s right. X will definitely come for the card... I guess they have specific people who they choose before giving the cards to them," Julia added, worry showing on her face as well.

Caleb sighed.

"We’ll know what to do after getting the card first."

Julia laughed at his remark.

"Hahahah, I’m really curious where all this confidence is coming from. Let’s see if you’ll actually win against Eldora though."

She said, burying the worrying thoughts behind her mind to enjoy the show.

Caleb didn’t reply—or at least he didn’t know what to tell her.

He couldn’t give out the system.

Or tell her that he wasn’t her brother and was a transmigrated soul from another timeline.

X was an issue that he would constantly keep facing.

It was important, but he wasn’t going to let it tie him down.

At the moment, he had a bid to win.

And since his opponent wasn’t going to switch the button, he was going to do it.

’The system promised me five times the money I spend, right? I have to make Eldora give up on this card... I can only do it by taking the risk,’ Caleb thought, mentally preparing himself.

He was going to draw the last line.

The item had already jumped to two million after the last bid from Eldora.

Caleb was to make his next bid.

All the others had already lost their interest in the bid.

Since they could all assume who the winner was.

And it wasn’t even as fun as the previous bidding, where each of the Monrrow siblings went toe to toe with each other... calling astronomical amounts they could only dream of.

To them, Caleb wasn’t going to win, and there was no point in him trying.

Eldora was only dragging the bid to win later... Or so they thought.

The only people who truly knew what was going on in the hall had smiles on their faces.

Jin, Katherine, and Eldora were all amused by Caleb’s show.

The entire hall turned silent, as though waiting for him to make his next bid.

And Caleb didn’t disappoint—not even slightly.

His voice echoed through the entire hall, unrelenting and persistent since his first bid.

"Ten million dollars!"
