Chasing The Vengeful Villainous Heiress-Chapter 99: Mariam’s eyes grew dark
Mariam had Stacy tell her exactly what had been going on. First. They went back into Valerie’s office and she sat down on Valerie’s seat.
Stacy explained to Mariam how Valerie kept straining herself on a daily basis, signing documents after thoroughly reviewing them and clearing up the troubles that Bernard had caused the company.
So many wanted to hold a lunch meeting with Valerie, thinking they could make her humble herself before them in order to gain their favor and clear up the mess smoothly but Valerie did not lower her pride even for a minute.
She rejected all lunch meetings and told them that if they had a problem with the way she would handle the problems, they were free to come over to the company to make their complaints.
Those small companies thought they had the upper hand but Valerie was always a step ahead of them.
"Is that what she has been doing these past few weeks?" Mariam asked and Stacy answered.
"Yes, lady." She said. "Day and night, she worked tirelessly without support from outside factions and used the resources Ross had to clear up the settlement fees, trying to gain back their trust with her capabilities."
Mariam went silent. Judging from what Stacy said, it would seem Valerie had very much tackled all the issues concerning contract breach while taking care of exports and import resources, yet, why did it seem like there were still way more problems to solve than what she had already handled?
"It doesn’t make sense." She muttered.
She figured the company was in a bad state but wasn’t this too much? It was like the more problems she solved, the more they arose.
"Miss Valerie has done exceptionally well, beyond any average capabilities." Stacy said and Mariam shot her a glare.
Those words coming from someone who was so haughty and arrogant a few minutes ago seemed forced.
Stacy understood the reason for Mariam’s glare and gulped. She cleared he throat and said,
"Please forgive my previous attitude." She said. "Despite what I said, Miss Valerie is a great person."
"Then why would you badmouth her like that?" Mariam asked, folding her arms. "You better come up with a reasonable excuse, if not, I’ll immediately take it that you’re a spy sent from another company."
Stacy flinched and immediately shook her head. She looked panicked.
"Nothing like that." Stacy said, sweat of anxiety dripping down her head.
"Then?" Mariam asked, using her overbearing presence to intimidate her.
"The truth is," she looked aside for a while, feeling embarrassed. "It’s because I was jealous of Miss Valerie."
"Hm?"
"She... She hasn’t even worked in the company, even when she was given the position of manager. Yet, her arrival saved the company a great deal. She accomplished so much in a short period of time and I..." She gritted her teeth. "I was jealous of that talent."
"So, who’s to say that you won’t act on your jealousy and sabotage your boss’ hard work?" Mariam asked, her eyes glowing dark. "After all, you purposely neglected your share of the work to put pressure on her and make her give up halfway. Am I right?"
Stacy shuddered. She clenched her fists, feeling the weight of what she had done.
"In a way, you’re the reason she fell sick." Mariam’s words were not without certainty.
This assistant... If she had at least done her part of the work wholeheartedly, Valerie would not have had to work extra hard.
"On that note, nothing is stopping you from snitching on your boss’ plans to other parties, am I right?"
"I would never." She sincerely spat out in her defense, her body shaking in fear. That was one thing she would never do. Never. "I... I only wanted her to do little and not do too much and that was why... That was why I left a part of my work. I was hoping...if... If she saw how much the work was, she would decide to take it slow but she just kept on working without looking back."
Mariam’s eyes grew dark.
"So, you’re trying to defend your actions." She said.
"N-no, I’m not. I’m sorry." Stacy immediately apologized. "I... I was wrong. What I did was wrong."
Mariam went silent. She unfolded her arms, picked up some of the scattered files, and said,
"That aside," she took a look at the file in her hand. "...it is true that my sister-in-law has done quite the remarkable thing and kept this company from falling. The losses are much but not enough to bring down the company."
"T-that’s why they’re trying to nitpick on the company and bring up things that don’t even exist." Stacy said, causing Mariam to narrow her eyebrows.
"What’s that supposed to mean?" Mariam asked.
"There are a lot of factions that are trying to bring Ross Corp down as we speak. That is why the problems keep increasing by the day." She explained.
"It’s understandable." Mariam said. "Ross is number two in terms of production and wealth. It’s a given that they would all try to make trouble in order to bring it down for good."
"Among those making trouble... there’s the Antler family." Stacy stated.
"Antler?"
"Yes? They are ranked number three in both business and wealth. I assume they want to climb up from that spot and take the position of number two. If Ross Corp falls, it’s their win."
"Those ants, I remember them now." Mariam said and suddenly started laughing. "I heard my grandfather say this before. Even if they’re number three, they can’t even hold a candle to Ross and Stewart." She laughed once more. "To think they would try to make a move with their small fry of a company."
"Are they really that small?"
"Hm," Mariam stopped laughing and thought of something. "Let’s say Stewart scores over 100 as the top business and corporation, Ross scores 92. Then, Antler," she stifled a laugh. "It scores 67." She laughed. "And every other family follows."
