Chasing The Vengeful Villainous Heiress-Chapter 162: What about his inheritance?
Mariam was silent. She stared at Stephanie, trying to check if she was lying but even if she were, she would never know.
This was the same girl who played with her feelings for years and she never caught on to her act.
But what if she was telling the truth? What if she was truly apologetic?
"Mariam," Stephanie called showing her teary eyes as her conscience ate at her heart. "I’m really sorry. Please, can we start over?"
Mariam’s heart skipped. Ah, this was bad. It seemed like she never really got over her and just buried it all deep in her heart, covering it up with work and all the issues at hand.
But she didn’t want to go back. She didn’t want to go back to being used. What she wanted, was to have her feelings reciprocated and if Stephanie couldn’t do that...
"I’m begging you." The tears rolled down and she reached out to hold Mariam’s hand. "Let’s do this thing again. I want... I want to be with you. For real this time. So please, give me a chance to make it up to you."
Mariam couldn’t bear it and threw her face away. She could not conclude if Stephanie was telling the truth but she wanted to believe she was. At least, her heart wanted to.
Could she just... Give her one more chance?
"I..." She wanted to speak, but her phone rang, and she picked it up. "Excuse me."
She answered and heard from Jeremy that her mother was dead. It was like her heart and her entire body shook at the news.
"What? You... You’re kidding, right? She was perfectly fine when she left. How can she be dead?"
She picked up her bag, ready to leave, when Stephanie called out to her.
"Mariam."
Mariam looked back at her and gritted her teeth. What to do? She had more pressing matters.
"I... I’ll call you." She said and rushed out of there, leaving Stephanie to clean up her tears.
She finally smiled and said,
"Thank you, Mariam. For giving me another chance."
Mariam ran with all her might.
It was as they said, when one good thing comes around, there’s bound to be a bad thing around the corner. You lose one to gain one and it looked like she just paid the price of gain.
She lost one. She lost her mother. How was the equation fair?
Just how?
She opened the door and saw Valerie and her grandfather, as well as Chris, in the room, but she was only concerned about knowing about what had happened to her mother, so she cried.
She cried in Valerie’s arms, cussing in her heart. She never asked for such a trade. She never wanted it.
They could take back whatever it was they were giving her. She wanted her mother back.
Mariam came to realize it was indeed not safe and if Valerie stayed back any longer, she or her brother would be the next to go.
She didn’t want that.
Chris explained to Valerie and the rest how he planned to take Valerie, as well as Max to his country and take Romaine’s name. There, he would shield them both and because Valerie would officially be in his care, he would have every reason to fight against those who were after her life, and that included those who killed her parents.
Valerie thought about it for a while and then Mariam said,
"Sister Valerie, please go with him."
Valerie looked at her surprised and then she saw the pain in her eyes.
She was depressed and didn’t want to lose anyone else. She... She didn’t want to suffer any more pain.
"My grandson is in a coma and it is all thanks to my incompetence." Grampa Leo said in a grievous tone. "Now, the only thing I can do is give him up to someone who can protect him."
"What about his inheritance?" Valerie asked. "Will he no longer be qualified to inherit your position? He worked his entire life for it."
"Valerie, dear." Grampa Leo called, holding onto her hand. "Max, my boy, never really wanted that position in the first place. He just wanted to be at a level where you would look at him and finally find him worthy to be your life partner. He... Wouldn’t mind if he missed this chance. I believe he would be happier to know that he can live in peace with you after giving up his inheritance."
Valerie gritted her teeth. It was all her fault.
"Then, will you hand it over to Steven?" She asked, vexed with her own words. For all they knew, he might’ve collided with Lucy to kill her but failed.
There was no evidence yet but they would definitely catch on to something.
Will the company and family end up in the hands of that bastard?
"I’m still strong to carry on a few more years. Ten years, in fact." Grampa Leo said softly.
"Don’t worry," Mariam suddenly spoke. "I... Will join the fight as soon as I am done with my school. I’ll have Ross employees and the shareholders to back me up. I won’t lose to that slime." She gritted her teeth and clenched her fists.
She looked determined. They both looked determined and Valerie couldn’t help but nod.
"Alright."
It was all settled and Chris decided they would leave in a week time. In the meantime, he would have his special forces protect her and report back if there were any suspicious traces around her.
Before leaving the hospital, the doctor called Called aside to explain to her his findings.
"I ran some tests on your husband, just in case, and it turns out he had indeed caught HLH when he was younger, as it is a hereditary disease." He said.
"What?!" They all exclaimed.
Grampa Leo almost broke down. That HLH, it was the cause of his late wife’s death and now his daughter suffered from it before her death.
Would his son also suffer the same fate? What was this horrible fate?
"But don’t worry, it already left his system." The doctor said and Grampa Leo looked up with some hope.
"How, doctor?" He asked.
"Since he was still young then and the disease was still developing, it would seem someone used poison to kill off its traces. It’s not an advisable method as it could hard the Patient and do more harm than good, but if successful, that patient would be completely free from it."
Valerie was speechless and then she remembered Tiana saying she didn’t remember why she fed Max with poison. She knew she was doing it for his own good but she couldn’t remember why, having spent so much time in the asylum.
They concluded it was to make him immune to poison and prevent his enemies from killing him through his food. They never thought...
Ah, who could’ve thought it was for that reason?
’Ah, mother, you knew from the start that you had HLH, didn’t you? And you didn’t want Max to suffer because of it so you did that. Mother.’ she shut her eyes. ’If only it wasn’t too late.’
