Chapter 140: What are you plotting?

A few days later, they decided to return to the country. Max had previously gotten a call from Tom, informing him of his overspent vacation and that he needed to return and take care of the continuously piling workload.

Of course, Max ignored it at first and just kept living peacefully with Valerie, but Valerie also wanted to return, giving him no hope of spending any more free days on their honeymoon.

Mariam and Tiana had already gone ahead of them a few days back because Mariam had some work to take care of in Ross, and thus those two lovebirds were the only ones left.

"We can’t stay much longer. Let’s leave, Max."

Ever since Chris’s visit, her mood just wasn’t the same and her mind would wander about, subconsciously thinking of the words he had said and the fact that he shamelessly approached her with such a shameless offer as well. It was infuriating and also disturbing.

She couldn’t stay focused and was always absent-minded. Max did all he could to cheer her up, as well as make her forget Chris’s visit by occupying her mind with something else. Sex, for example. It made them hump on each other like rutting rabbits.

It worked, but only for a while because she would eventually start thinking about it once she was less occupied and idle.

"Come on, we can stay for one more day, can’t we?" Max asked, pleading, in fact, as he followed Valerie, who was walking towards the door, dressed in her simple travel outfit of red top and black shorts and her sunglasses above her head.

Jeremy was behind them, rolling both suitcases she had taken effort into packing.

"If you want to stay so much, you can stay. I won’t force you." Valerie said, pausing at the door. "But of course, I won’t stay with you either." She smiled.

"You know that’s impossible. What would I do here on my own without you?" He asked and she gave him a knowing smile.

"You can always do that." She raised her hand, folded it into a fist, and shook it up and down, still smiling as she said, "You have my picture with you, right? I’m sure it’ll be of great help."

"Gah, don’t say cruel words." Max said, rubbing the back of his neck and she laughed. "Okay, I yield. Let’s go back."

"Sure. Let’s go." She hooked her arms in his, smiling sheepishly. "The plane is waiting."

"I can never beat you, can I?"

"Well, you could always keep trying." She said. "I got a call from grandfather." She suddenly said, changing the topic.

Max looked down at her. Her cunning and sheepish look had turned serious. He got a call, too, so he knew what was going on.

"Is that why you’re hurrying back?" He asked and Valerie looked up at him with no words said from her mouth, but her eyes revealed it all. He sighed. "I got it. Let’s go."

He also got a call and though it wasn’t anything serious, it still needed their attention. Max thought he could gloss over it for a few days more, but I guess not.

"Hm. Time to be the filial grandson." Valerie said and he clicked his tongue.

"You’re mocking me, aren’t you?" Valerie laughed. "When have I ever not been filial?" He asked, but she just kept laughing, which made him embarrassed. Was there a secret she knew of that he didn’t?

His grandfather had a knack for spewing his most embarrassing moments, so he wondered if he said something to Valerie that made her make that statement.

’Well, at least she laughed.’ he thought and held her close as they approached the car.

In the plane, Valerie was staring outside the plane window with glazed eyes and her thoughts flying about. She had a glass of red wine in her hand and stirred it. She sighed and sipped from her glass, reluctantly looking away from the window.

In front of her was Max who was busy on his laptop. He heard her sigh and looked up but she smiled at him, urging him to carry on with his work and not mind her.

Once she had waved him off, she once again returned her gaze to the window, staring at the white clouds.

She couldn’t stop thinking about Chris’s words. It bothered her throughout their little holiday and it was still bothering her on the plane. She wasn’t supposed to let it worry her this much. No, it wasn’t supposed to bother her at all, but it was disturbing.

Chris had made it clear that he wouldn’t stay still until he had what he wanted but he did not return after that day and didn’t even try to contact her. Though she was thankful for it, it was still suspicious.

A man like that wouldn’t have given up so soon and so easily. She stood her ground but hay didn’t mean much to a man of his standing. To him, her words were just empty nonsense from a child who did not understand life yet.

’What are you plotting?’ she just couldn’t figure it out.

His words had made her feel like he would do something to Max but he didn’t even take action once.

She hoped it was just her overthinking, and she hoped Chris wouldn’t use any underhanded method to get what he wanted, but she couldn’t really tell what his actions would be. And for a man like him, even her hope was hopeless.

All she could do was remain calm and vigilant. But first, they had to leave this county that was completely under his control.

’He has all the camera footage of the country. He’s crazy.’ She thought. ’And because of him, my mood hasn’t been the same since then. It’s frustrating.’

"Hey, get some rest." Max said, closing his laptop. "You didn’t sleep well last night, and we’re heading straight to Gramps place once we touch down, so this is your only chance to sleep." He said.

Valerie stared at him and then laughed.

"What?" He asked but she shook her head.

"It’s nothing." She said and calmed her laughter. "You just look really good with that shirt."

Max closed his eyes. Of course that was it. No one would take him seriously with the kind of shirt he was wearing.

As if she had been waiting for such an opportunity for a long time, Valerie saw a few Hawaii shirts in a gift shop and bought them right away. And she also made Max wear one on the way out.

It was ridiculous wearing such a thing back from their honeymoon. It was basically announcing to the world that he was returning from a vacation.

Well, it didn’t matter. It was something his darling wife specially picked out for him. He would proudly wear it, but... She didn’t have to laugh.

Well, as long as she was happy.

They finally touched down in their home country and were blown away by the familiar air they had missed for days.

"Haah," Max exclaimed with a satisfied sigh and placed his arms around Valerie’s shoulder. "The air seems nicer than when we left." He said, but Valerie rolled her eyes and said,

"It’s still the same boring air, if you ask me." She muttered and he laughed.

"Oh well, it’s your country’s air, so you have to deal with it."

The car pulled up in front of them, and Max opened the door for her.

"After you." She got in and he followed after.

Jeremy waited with their luggage and said,

"Sir, I’ll wait for the next car."

Yeah, he did want to impose on their alone time, if you excluded the driver.

"You can just take the front seat. Is there a need to stay back?" Max asked and Jeremy shook his head.

"You asked me to pick up ’it’ remember?" He said, and Max’s memory snapped on him.

"Oh, yeah. There’s that. Well, take your time." He snickered.

Valerie looked at him suspiciously and once they were on the road, she asked,

"What are you planning this time?" She asked with her eyes on the road.

"You’ll find out soon."

He had no plans of telling her what ’it’ was about, and she wasn’t going to press further into it either. If he was keeping it a secret to surprise her, then she would very much like to be surprised.

"Um, aren’t we going too fast?" Valerie asked and Max noticed the speed was abnormal.

"Hey," he called out to the driver. "I understand we’re the only ones on the road but this speed is too much. Slow down." He said but strangely, the driver ignored him. "Hey, are you ignoring me? I said slow down."

Still, the driver did not respond. Valerie looked outside the window. They weren’t going through the normal route. In fact, he had taken them in the opposite direction towards a dangerous cliff.

This was odd. Where was he taking them to and why... Why was he doing this? Valerie’s heart raced as this strange nagging feeling jabbed her heart.

’This... Isn’t Chris’s doing, is it?’

No time to play around with her thoughts. They didn’t know what the driver’s motive was, but it was best to take action. Little into that conclusion, they saw a deserted tanker parked in front of them, and their car was headed straight for the tanker.

"Max!" Valerie called alarmingly.

"I see it." Max said and grabbed the driver by the neck. "Stop this car right away or I’ll snap your neck."

The driver, with no will to live, turned his head, revealing a completely unfamiliar face, and grinned.

"I’ll die either way. But you have to die with me so I can ’live’. Hehe." He said creepily and Max clicked his tongue.

"Then, I guess I won’t be letting either of us die." He said and knocked him unconscious.
