Chapter 137: Promise me you’ll let me know right away

Max watched Valerie as she looked around in disbelief. He had a proud grin plastered to hai face, and then, he asked,

"What do you think? Is it good?"

"Good? You bought me a freaking bookstore. All these books," she pointed at the rows and rows of shelves containing nothing but romance novels. "... You bought them. Wait, when did you have time to do this?"

"I just squeezed it in somehow." He said, shrugging his shoulders like it was no big deal but Valerie was actually touched.

Yeah, she wasn’t very crazy about reading but she enjoyed it and enjoyed getting lost in the fantasy world.

When she told him she loved reading and he decided to read a few lines from one of her books just so he could portray the male lead in it, it was actually funny. But going as far as buying an entire bookstore filled with those types of books... Ah, it was no longer funny.

It was romantic.

She turned to Max, who was still waiting for her response.

"Please don’t tell me I went too far." He said but she shook her head and instead stretched out her arms, as if inviting him for a hug.

"You didn’t go too far." She said and approached with those stretched arms, going in for the hug. "I mean, it’s a bit much, from a normal person’s perspective, but we’re not exactly normal, so..." she laughed. "What am I even saying? I’m so short of words that I don’t even know anymore."

"It’s alright. Some actions are far louder than words." He said, kissing the top of her head. "I wanted to give you something special and thought deeply about it. You’re not one to get excited over silver and gold. You don’t get excited over dresses either so it was a stitch."

"I like this better than any silver and gold you can ever offer." Valerie said, laughing once more. "You bought a bookstore."

"I have something to say." Max said, suddenly sounding serious.

She tilted her head and watched him as he took her hand and led her to a chair. He sat her down and kissed her hand.

"You better record this down or you might regret it." He said, and Valerie quickly turned on the recorder on her phone.

She didn’t know what he was about to say but the formality was making her a bit anxious

"Damn, now that I have to say it, I’m feeling shy, Valerie." He said and covered his face for a moment.

Valerie stayed silent, waiting for him to compose himself before saying whatever it was that he was planning to say.

He looked down at her with sincerity in his eyes and then went on his knees. She watched him, still anticipating his words when he took her hand again and started playing with her fingers. He interlocked them with his and let go, doing all he could to calm himself.

"Valerie, the love of my life," he began, staring down at her hands. "I am more than happy that you are my other half and I’m glad fate brought us together after all the trials and tribulations."

’Is this a form of confession?’ Valerie thought and smiled warmly. ’Cute.’

"I regret the years we could not spend together, the years we could not even think of a happily ever after with one another. I regret that I got to love you late and wasn’t there for 24 of your birthdays." He said. "I wish to make up for all those lost years with this library. Here are the keys." He took a single golden key out of his pocket and placed it in her hand. "This little is not enough to make up for the lost years but I wish," he said and kissed her knuckles. "I pray that this space, which is known by you and me, will become a safe haven for you in the future."

Valerie was a bit confused. It was romantic up till this point, but why did it seem like he was trying to convey something with his words?

"I hope you can run here, when you feel like life is getting too hard or you just want to relax. I pray that this space makes you happy and fulfilled."

"Max," she finally spoke. "Is there something you’re not telling me?" She asked, and Max raised his head, showing a smile on his lips.

"And what could that possibly be?" He asked.

It looked like he had no intention of telling her, even if something was going on and she got worried.

"Nothing’s going on, my sweet wife." He said. "So don’t start getting worried for nothing."

"I’m just being concerned." She said and he stroked her hair. "Make sure to tell me if something happens. I won’t take it lightly with you if you try to do anything risky on your own."

"Alright."

"Promise me." She said, clutching him tightly. "Promise me you’ll let me know right away."

Max looked into her eyes and smiled, swiping her hair out of her face.

"I promise. If anything happens, my wife will be the first to know." His words were a bit assuring. "Now, where was I?"

He looked at her hands and smiled.

"There’s one more thing." He said. "I noticed my wife doesn’t have a sigma of ownership."

"What did you say?" She asked, showing her fist and he laughed it off.

"I’m joking." He said, amidst his laugh. "As I was saying, your fingers are so long and pretty, but they’re missing something."

"What is it?" Valerie asked and her eyes widened seeing what Max brought out. It was a ring, with a ruby stone at the top.

"This should go well with that bracelet you treasure so much." He said, sliding the ring into her ring finger and then kissing it. "Treasure it as much as you treasure your mother’s bracelet, okay?"

Valerie looked at the ring on her finger. Her eyes suddenly became teary. It felt like this little ring was more valuable than the library he gave to her.

"Thank you." She said as he got up from his knees. He raised her to her feet and kissed her.

"You know, there’s a better way to thank you. Why don’t we make our first memorable memory here, Wife?" He grinned and kissed her once more. Yeah, he was headed in that direction.

After finishing up at the library, they both returned to the Villa. As soon as they stepped in, they were greeted by an unexpected guest who was comfortably sitting in the living room and sipping tea.

"Ah, there you are." He said.

Valerie looked at the guest, confused. Who was he and why... Did he bring so many bodyguards?

If they didn’t know any better, and jf not for his high end clothing, they would’ve assumed he was a thug or loan shark coming over to ask for the repayment of the loan given out.

"I’m glad to see you look nothing like that good for nothing, at least." The guest said and grinned. "Well, won’t you come and greet this uncle of yours, Niece?"

"What?!"
