Chapter 103: Hand me my tablet

Max looked at Valerie and then shut his eyes. There was no use hiding it now. They were almost at the company.

"Hold on." He said, taking out his phone to dial a number.

Valerie was silent, a bit restless and confused. Why wasn’t he being clear with her? Was he hiding something?

"Hey, are you in the office?" He asked and glanced down at Valerie. "Have you seen Valerie’s bracelet by chance?"

’Who is he talking to?’ Valerie wondered.

"It’s a bracelet with rubies." Max explained and Mariam who was on the line nodded.

"Yeah, I think I saw it yesterday, so I put it away safely." She said.

"Good. We’re almost at the company. Bring it down." Max said.

"Wait, now?" Mariam frantically asked. "I’m really busy at the moment."

"Take a break. Don’t you want to see how your sister-in-law is doing?" He asked and cut the call before she could refute any more.

Mariam looked at her phone and sighed.

"Jeez, he’s not making anything easy for me." She muttered and looked up at Stacy who was busy at the corner. "Hm, guess I should take a break."

She got up from her chair, opened the drawer at the side, and took out the little box she had kept the bracelet in.

"Stacy, I’ll go out for a bit." She said, and Stacy nodded with no questions asked.

Unlike what Mariam feared, the job wasn’t so difficult. Well, it was but once she cut the root source of the problem, there was not much left to sort out.

Valerie looked at Max, still waiting for him to give her an explanation.

"You wanted your bracelet, right? She’ll bring it down for you." He said but she squinted her eyes in suspicion.

"Wait, by she, you don’t mean Mariam, right?" She asked but to her surprise, he nodded. "What?"

"It’s not a big deal, Valerie." He said. "Though I didn’t want things to be like this, I didn’t want to leave the company bare and let all your effort go to waste. You’d have suffered for nothing. Mariam just happened to be in the company so I let her take charge."

Valerie was silent. The first thing that came to her mind was the fact that he didn’t really hate the company as it seemed on the surface.

Well, maybe he did but he cared for her efforts that he thought that far, even after threatening to destroy the company over and over.

Then, there was the thought that was plaguing her mind, wondering how he was able to leave that troubling company to Mariam.

She was just 19 years old and no matter how capable she was, there was no way she could tackle it all alone.

"Jeremy." Max called out to Jeremy who was sitting at the passenger’s seat.

"Yes, boss?"

"Hand me my tablet." He said, and Jeremy passed his tablet to him.

Max, in turn, handed it to Valerie.

"What?" She asked while accepting it.

"Check the news." He simply said and she lowered her eyes to the tablet. "You’ll find most of your answers there."

While the car drove into the company’s garage, Valerie scrolled through the internet.

She came across a lot of familiar articles and wondered what he had in mind when he told her to check the news. Well, she was sure he had his reason for giving it to her so she kept scrolling. Then, her eyes caught on to a new piece of news.

The faction that had plagued Ross Corp a lot during these trying times, the Antler family, was destroyed.

She looked up at Max, shocked.

When did this happen?

"Hey, there." She heard Mariam’s voice and the window slowly slid down.

She found Mariam smiling brightly at her.

"It’s great to see you out of the hospital. I was really worried, sis." Mariam said and Valerie blinked.

’Sis? When did she...?’

Mariam noticed the look on her face and felt she didn’t like being called like that.

"Um, can’t I call you that?" Mariam said, suddenly sulking. "If you’re uncomfortable, I’ll go back to the way I used to call you."

"N-no, I’m not uncomfortable." Valerie said. "I’m just surprised, that’s all." She managed to smile. "I like it. Please keep calling me that."

Her response made Mariam smile once again and Max cleared his throat from behind.

"Oh, that’s right." She took out the box and handed it to her. "Here, I kept it safely." She said, still smiling brightly.

One would immediately come to the conclusion that Mariam was waiting to be praised. But before Valerie could say anything, Max interrupted.

"You’ve given it to her, you can go now. I remember you saying you were very busy." He said and Mariam shot him an annoyed look.

"How cruel of you." She said and sighed. "Anyway, sis, I’ll try to leave work early so we can have dinner together."

"Uh, alright." Valerie said, a bit confused for some reason.

"Drive." Max said and the driver drive out of the garage, while Mariam waved.

Once they were out of sight, she sighed and said,

"She still looked pale." She rubbed the back of her neck. "Well, at least she’s going home. After eating Mom’s cooking, she’ll probably feel a lot better." She got fired up. "Yes, let’s work fast and head home. I have to eat dinner with my sister-in-law."

She hurried away delightedly. 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮

Valerie turned to Max, waiting to hear the rest of the explanation.

"Valerie, you need to learn to rely on others." He suddenly said out of the blue.

"Where did that come from?" She asked him.

"The method Mariam used to fix most of the problems of your company is relying on a stronger party." He said. "She knew it was too much to do alone and knowing she has powerful connections that can shut the problem down completely, she decided to use it."

"She used Stewart." Valerie said solemnly.

"Yes. With the name of Stewart, she took out the Antler family and set an example, warning any other party who had their eyes on Ross to back off." He explained and smiled at her. "You should’ve relied on me from the beginning. All this would’ve been done and over with if you did but you were being so stubborn." He reached out to her and pinched her nose. "Next time, use me."

Valerie understood his words. He had been saying it for so long that she should rely on him but she had been so stubborn.

"You’re right. I was too stubborn for my own good." She said and laughed. "I think I’ve learned my lesson now. Get ready, ’cause I’m going to be imposing on you from now on. I’ll rely on you for every little thing. Don’t complain if I become a lazy bag of bones." She chuckled.

"I would really like that." Max said, smiling back at her.

He would love nothing more than to be her source of joy, contentment, and help.
