Chapter 317: Chapter 325: 18 Years Old

James Black’s reply was to tighten his palm, leaving Jane Sampson’s fingertips unable to move. Lowering his gaze, he saw her smile slowly fade, replaced by a look of sorrow. Her fingers were still feebly struggling against the center of his palm. Eventually, Jane’s antics made James laugh.

"How old are you?" James asked with laughter in his voice.

"Eighteen," Jane responded quickly. "I’m a forever 18-year-old fairy." 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

"Heh," James laughed, not arguing with her.

The elevator door opened, and James led Jane inside. From the basement level to the second floor, someone else came in. It was the same auntie they had encountered that morning while buying groceries.

The auntie came in, carrying bags of stuff, glanced at the two in the elevator, her eyes settled on their clasped hands for a moment, her mouth twitched, and she muttered, "Kids these days, in public no less, have no restraint."

Jane sneakily looked up at James, and when he looked back at her, she exaggeratedly rolled her eyes and then covertly nodded toward the auntie.

James, on the other hand, showed no reaction, as if the muttering woman was not talking about him.

"Miss, I’ve heard that your husband is a defender," the auntie suddenly spoke up to Jane. "Some neighbors have seen him coming back in his team uniform."

"Ah," Jane replied nonchalantly, wondering if the auntie might have inquired about her and James after they went their separate ways this morning.

Fortunately, she had been wearing her mask and hat the whole time, only taking off her sunglasses after getting in and out of the car.

"Why marry a guard? Isn’t that bad? It’s true that guards’ salaries have gone up recently, but how high can they really go? It’s still a fixed salary, right? And he has to stick around the guard team, sacrificing so much. Where’s the good in that? You say your husband is busy with work. He’s stuck at the team base all year round, how can he not be busy? So, marrying a guard? There’s no benefit in that."

"Whether it’s good or not, that’s for me, his wife, to worry about," Jane’s temper flared up. "Auntie, you don’t know anything about it, and yet you’re rat-a-tat-tat criticizing someone’s occupation. That’s not very nice, is it?" Jane was hardly polite as she spoke out.

"Young lady, I’ve been around the block. I’ve eaten more salt than you’ve had meals," the auntie said with an air of having more experience and knowledge than Jane.

By now, Jane was amused by the annoyance. She had seen people who couldn’t take a hint, but never someone quite like this.

Since the auntie was being rude, Jane was not going to show courtesy either.

"Auntie, you said you’ve eaten more salt than I’ve had meals. I believe that. It indicates that the living conditions during your youth weren’t very good, so you’d put more salt in cooking, which would save some money on groceries. I understand that."

When the house first came on the market, James bought it, because they were officially engaged at the time. James surveyed new property developments throughout Capital Province before finally choosing to settle here for their marriage home.

Partly, it was because this real estate was a high-end building. The house prices and property management fees alone would exclude the majority of ordinary people. James considered that, since Jane would mostly live alone for some time, when choosing the house, he deliberately picked the best location with the highest price.

After getting the keys, James had arranged for the decoration, and they moved in post-wedding. Jane had never seen this old couple when she first moved in; they only moved in over the past year.
