Chapter 170: Chapter 170: School Anniversary

The gentle and softly spoken words reached deep into the heart.

And because of the clear sweetness of a bowl of soup, warmth spread to every part of his body, making him feel as though the window that had been closed was opened by her, allowing sunlight to pour in unhindered, lightening both body and mind.

There was a glimmer in his eyes, and he responded with a gentle, magnetic voice, "Alright, darling."

...

For several days, Claire Prescott would come to Azure Court after having dinner at home following work.

During that time, she usually saw him at the early hours of morning.

The words "afraid he won’t return" had lodged in his heart, and no matter how late, Keane Lowell would always return to sleep.

Ordinary days became warm and colorful with each other’s companionship.

The weather gradually cooled, with a noticeable difference in temperature between day and night, and time quickly turned to the day of Kystral First High School’s anniversary.

On this day.

Claire Prescott took the afternoon off, tidied herself a bit before leaving, and said to Septima, who was feeding Little Seven in the yard, "Grandma, I’m heading out now."

Septima still remembered to invite Keane Lowell over for dinner, "Come back early in the evening; Grandma will be waiting for you both at home."

"Okay." With those parting words, Claire Prescott tucked the speech manuscript under her arm and left through the side gate.

As soon as she stepped out, she saw Keane Lowell’s car parked at the door.

The chauffeur opened the backseat for her.

When Claire Prescott bent to get in, she found it was empty.

Keane Lowell hadn’t come.

After getting in, the chauffeur explained, "Mr. Lowell will arrive later; he asked you to go ahead first."

"Alright." With that response, Claire Prescott looked at her phone, silently staring at the gray avatar on her WeChat interface.

The school wasn’t far from Sinclair Apothecary. A drive on the main road would take twenty minutes, and there was a small road from here to the school, making the journey about the same duration by electric bicycle.

She frequently used the small road for her commute back in those days.

Though it’s quite nearby, she hadn’t returned to school since graduation.

Today, in welcoming alumni back, the school had specifically designated a parking area at the entrance, where luxury cars gathered as far as the eye could see.

Upon getting out of the car.

She unexpectedly met Chase Chambers.

He had arrived earlier, parking right beside her.

As their eyes met, Chase Chambers immediately walked over with a familiar tone, "I thought you wouldn’t come."

Claire Prescott curved a faint smile at the corners of her mouth, "Decided to come back and take a look."

"Let’s go in together."

"Sure."

Everything about her demeanor was courteous; her appearance still as clean and fresh as ever, but with a bit more steadiness than before.

Even as they walked into the school where they once lived their everyday routines, only half an arm’s distance apart, there was an undeniable sense of estrangement.

"Back again."

The old security guard greeted warmly, though his expression remained stern.

Not sure if he remembered them or if it was standard for all returning alumni, regardless, he gave their invitation a quick glance before letting them in.

Once inside, Claire Prescott couldn’t help but glance back at the gate.

Chase Chambers asked in confusion, "What’s wrong?"

After a brief pause, Claire Prescott told him, "You go on ahead; I’ll wait here for my boyfriend."

At the mention of a boyfriend, a dark shadow crossed Chase Chambers’ eyes, and looking at her serene face, he unconsciously clenched his fists tighter.

He swallowed with difficulty, "I’ll head in first then."

"Okay."

"The alumni meeting will start soon, don’t wait too long."

Claire Prescott nodded and replied, "Alright."

As his tall, firm figure slowly receded into the distance, disappearing around a corner.

A voice calling out to her sounded from not far away.

Turning toward the sound, Claire Prescott saw a girl, impeccably dressed, heading her way. From earrings to high heels, everything about her exuded an exquisite flair.

The girl’s distinct features were attractive individually, yet when combined, they appeared slightly odd.

Claire Prescott couldn’t immediately recall who she was.

She asked, "Who are you?"

"I’m Joanna Joyce. We were in the same class for three years, and you don’t even remember the class monitor? That’s a bit rude."

Claire Prescott momentarily stiffened, slightly incredulous upon hearing this.

Of course, she remembered their class monitor, Joanna Joyce.

It’s just that her change was somewhat vast... no, extremely vast. Claire remembered she hadn’t looked like this before.

She seemed to have been single-lidded before, her nose wasn’t so high and straight.

Claire Prescott did not dwell on it much, simply saying, "Long time no see."

"You didn’t attend the last class reunion. Many people worried you weren’t doing well, and that’s why you didn’t dare to meet old classmates." Joanna spoke while occasionally fiddling with her wavy curls, the diamond ring on her ring finger dazzling in the sunlight, hard to miss.

Claire Prescott observed everything and naturally understood her flaunting.

Especially when noticing the simple gold ring on Claire’s middle finger, Joanna’s eyes lit up, and her smile took on a superior slant.

"Are you engaged? Is it with Chase Chambers?"

Claire Prescott’s expression immediately darkened, her gaze icy as she looked at Joanna, "Whether I’m engaged or who my fiancé is, what’s it to you?"

Seeing her expression change.

Joanna was momentarily intimidated by her aura, her smile turning stiff, and she said with forced politeness, "Just asked out of concern; no need to be so grim."

From the first sentence Joanna uttered, Claire Prescott had seen right through her. She didn’t hold back any longer, "Save your fake concern and vanity, don’t disgust me in front of me."

"You!" Joanna instantly turned furious, casting a side-eye at her, "Do you know who my husband is? Aren’t you afraid he’ll cause trouble for you what with the way you’re talking to me?"

As soon as she finished speaking, a broom flew accurately toward Joanna.

Seeing it, Claire Prescott quickly stepped back a few paces.

The broom was thrown by the security guard.

He angrily scolded, "People like you disgust me the most. Stop claiming yourself as a Kystral student, you’re an embarrassment."

Joanna was deeply aggrieved, pointing at both of them, "You... you’re too much."

Seeing the security guard approach with a fierce demeanor, Joanna turned pale with fear, and hurriedly ran in the direction of the main hall on her high heels.

But the security guard only went over to pick up the broom and then returned to the security room without a word.

Left alone under the shade of the trees now was Claire Prescott.

It was just a minor interlude; she quickly adjusted herself, checked the time on her phone, and after waiting a little longer without seeing his arrival, she decided not to wait any longer.

The stepped auditorium was occupied by many people.

The event hadn’t started yet, so the hall wasn’t quiet.

Claire Prescott found her seat, only to discover the spot next to her belonged to Iris Yates, who couldn’t make it today, so that seat remained empty.

And then there was Joanna Joyce.

Their gazes inadvertently collided, faint sparks seeming to fly.

Claire Prescott indifferently withdrew her gaze, sat down, and focused on her phone, completely unaware she was separated from Chase Chambers by just one row of steps.
