Chapter 715: Silent And Everlasting

Despite He Juan telling him to wait inside the car, Mu Yuze opted to stand outside, his distant gaze fixated on the tranquil cemetery before him. When a faint chilling breeze blew, he tightened the coat around himself and rubbed his hands to generate some warmth, sniffling.

He had been steadily counting the time, noting that almost twenty minutes had passed since he left He Juan alone back there. He couldn’t seem to shake off the image of the man’s back from his mind. Standing before the three tombstones, He Juan had a faint gentle smile on his face, yet his entire body was shrouded in a thick aura of desolation and sorrow.

It was both a distressing and heartbreaking sight.

As unwilling as Mu Yuze was to leave He Juan behind, he understood that the man needed some time alone with his family. After all, he had not visited for the past seven years and most likely... this might even be his first time seeing his little brother’s grave.

Mu Yuze took a deep inhale, his hand moving to rest on the area above his heart. He had been feeling a constant pain here, though he could no longer differentiate whether it belonged to himself or He Juan. It wasn’t the sharp and penetrating kind of grief, but a silent, blunt and unrelenting ache, as if someone had pressed on his barely healed bruise, spreading the throbbing twinge bit by bit from the center of the wound to every inch of his body. The muted pain made it a little hard for him to breathe, as if his lungs had shriveled up and could no longer process the oxygen within.

When the snow continued to rage upon the world, Mu Yuze finally couldn’t keep still any longer. Grabbing a black umbrella from the car, he locked the vehicle and made his way to the cemetery, retracing the path he had just taken.

The wind whistled fiercely beside his ears. His feet sank lightly into the plush surface of snow with each step he took, while the white mist billowing out of his mouth cast a blurry haze over his vision. The descending snowflakes made it seem like the entire world had transformed into a canvas of pristine white.

Until a speck of black entered his peripheral vision, and Mu Yuze raised the brim of his umbrella. In an instant, the sight before him caused the rims of his eyes to turn red.

He Juan was sitting cross-legged in front of the tombstones, seemingly as if he had transformed into a frozen statue. Snow accumulated on his head and shoulders, clinging to his long braided hair and lashes, yet he paid them no heed at all. His distant gaze was fixed on the lifeless tombs before him, but it also seemed as if he was seeing something else through them. In that motionless state, he almost merged into one with the ivory landscape, as if he could shatter into tiny snowflakes without a moment’s notice, drifting away into oblivion.

At that moment, the pain in Mu Yuze’s chest abruptly turned hot and searing, making him realize— ah, this one belongs to me.

All this time...

The silent and everlasting agony, it had all come from He Juan.

Before his mind could process, Mu Yuze’s body shot forward like an arrow released from its bowstring, driven by an urgent need to reach his Alpha. He opened his mouth to call out, but then he almost tripped on the snow, causing his body to stagger. Gritting his teeth, Mu Yuze fought to regain his balance and took a resolute step forward, then another and another, until he was practically running with all his might. The black umbrella was left abandoned in the snowy expanse behind him.

"Gege—!" His cry resonated powerfully through the silent and sacred area, as though the wind helped to deliver it for him.

It was at that moment that He Juan snapped out of his reverie, blinking his sticky and sore eyes. But before he could even raise his head, Mu Yuze crashed to his knees beside him, cooking up a storm of snow. He threw his arms around the He Juan, cradling He Juan’s head close to his bosom.

A hint of sob lingered in his voice as he rushed out, "It’s okay... everything will be okay! I will be here for you, Gege. I will always be here for you!"

That’s why...

Please don’t let yourself suffer anymore, okay?

The omega’s body temperature ran high. Held in his embrace, He Juan felt like he was being cocooned in a thick and warm blanket. His heartbeat, loud and powerful, echoed right beside He Juan’s ears, leaving him momentarily dazed. The pervasive chill that had gripped his body began to dissipate, and only then... only when bathed in this searing warmth did he realize how cold he had been.

As if his sluggish sensory nerves were finally working, all the delayed physical reactions slammed back into He Juan like a tidal wave. His teeth began to chatter, his body wracked by tremors, and his lips gained a faint blue hue. He instinctively grasped onto the warm body beside him, clutching onto it as if it were a lifeline.

"Mu Yuze..." his weak and hoarse voice echoed, "Mu Yuze..."

Mu Yuze replied with a soft, trembling ’mn’, his voice thick with a nasal tone. "I’m here."

Full of heartache, he did his best to brush aside the snow clinging onto the Alpha’s body. Never before had he wished so strongly that his body was broad and tall, even more than He Juan’s, so he could shield this vulnerable man in his embrace and block the chill for him. He held He Juan tighter to him, desperately attempting to transfer his body heat to the frozen Alpha.

"You’re so cold," he observed with a hint of anxiety. "Are you okay? Shall we... shall we leave first and return later? Let’s go somewhere you can feel warm. Okay, Gege?" he implored softly.

He Juan gave a barely imperceptible nod. Were it not for their close proximity, Mu Yuze would have missed it altogether.

With a burst of strength that surged out of nowhere, Mu Yuze slung He Juan’s arm over his shoulders and pulled the Alpha up to his feet. He staggered a bit, almost losing his balance, but fortunately, He Juan wasn’t completely unaware and could still support his own weight. 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮

Casting a final glance to the three snow-covered tombstones, Mu Yuze offered a respectful nod before taking He Juan away.

He means more than the world to me. I’m sure you wouldn’t want to see him like this either, so please... grant him your blessing and protection from now on.
