Chapter 711: Tell Him I’m Sorry

After lunch, He Juan received an urgent phone call from Prime Minister Liang and headed to the study to answer it, whereas the duo Ye Brothers and Wu Yuan were helping Chen Youzhi wash the dishes.

Feeling a bit stuffy, Mu Yuze decided to stroll around the house, and his feet led him to the back garden. He took a deep breath and allowed the crisp air to fill his lungs before exhaling slowly, watching as white mist billowed out of his mouth.

Once again, He Juan’s smiling face flashed in his mind. The mating bond had come with its own perks; without it, he wouldn’t have realized that despite the Alpha’s impeccable smile, he was feeling wistful inside, as if something was still weighing in his mind.

What could it be? He had heard from Chen Youzhi that He Juan’s little brother, He Xie, passed away around this time of the year, so could He Juan possibly be thinking about him?

Mu Yuze was brought out of his reverie when he sensed a quiet presence approaching him from behind. But he did not move and opted to wait patiently until the other person announced their presence.

"Here."

A familiar phone entered his line of sight, and Mu Yuze turned, his gaze tracing over the pale and slender arm, thin shoulders, until he met a pair of brilliant blue eyes. Sirius averted his gaze and coughed a little awkwardly, "Your phone screen was cracked, so Mr. Chen and I got it fixed. It should be working properly now, but check it just in case."

"Thank you," Mu Yuze accepted the phone and gave it a cursory inspection. There did not seem to be any issues; the interface was still running smoothly. At a glance, he could see that he had received tons of missed calls and unread messages, but he chose to ignore them for the time being and slipped the phone back to his pocket.

Even before he lifted his head, he could sense a sticky gaze on his head – or to be exact, the fresh bite mark behind his neck.

In that split second, Mu Yuze’s thoughts raced. He was certain that Sirius did not approach him just to hand over the phone. So what was his real purpose? Did it have something to do with He Juan?

The answer was a solid— yes.

After all, He Juan was their bridge and sole mutual acquaintance. Despite having known each other all those years ago, the only reason why they could meet in the first place was because of He Juan.

So this omega... did he have a crush on He Juan?

Was he here to confront Mu Yuze because he felt like Mu Yuze was not worthy enough for the Alpha? Or did he come here to declare war by saying something like ’I won’t give up on him even if he has marked you’? Mu Yuze’s wild imagination continued to spiral with each passing second, and all the possible scenarios about two omegas fighting for an Alpha played out in his mind like a fast-forwarded movie, leaving him slightly uneasy.

He opened his mouth to say something, but Sirius beat him to it, asking,

"Being marked... how does it feel?"

Mu Yuze blinked, slightly taken aback. He raised his head to meet the young man’s eyes, but within those oceanic blue eyes, he could only see undisguised curiosity, intrigue, envy— no trace of jealousy.

"Does it hurt?" Sirius’ blue eyes appeared innocent as he shot off a barrage of blunt questions, "I heard the pain is comparable to having a chunk of your flesh cut off. Ugh, look at that. You look like you’ve been mauled by a beast. I didn’t expect XIU to be so violent." He clicked his tongue and rubbed his arms with a mildly terrified look.

"I..." Mu Yuze recalled the moment he’d been bitten. Honestly, he did not have much recollection of, as he was so distracted by the mind-blowing pleasure coursing through him at that time. Feeling his ears warm up, he coughed into his fist before replying, "It’s not that bad..."

Sirius gave him a skeptical look but said nothing to refute.

For a while, the two of them stood side by side, gazing at the gentle snowflakes that slowly draped over the garden. Mu Yuze intuitively sensed that Sirius had more to say, and thus he waited, realizing that perhaps he had been thinking too much and the other omega did not come here to pick a fight with him.

Sirius released a light exhale, the tip of his nose reddening from the cold. "Do you remember? We used to play together a lot when we were little."

Mu Yuze would like to correct that he was already fifteen back then, just that his growth was a bit stunted due to the malnourishment, but in the end, he decided against it and only let out a soft, "...mn."

"Do you still remember my big brother, Marius?"

Mu Yuze nodded again.

A small melancholic smile tugged on Sirius’ lips. "That’s good. Even though my brother appeared easy-going and amicable, he didn’t really like to make friends. They’re unimportant in our line of business. Friendship is second, personal benefit is the first. Only XIU... and maybe you, are the exceptions. You might find it hard to believe, but you’re my one and only childhood friend. He guarded me so securely and didn’t allow me to hang out with my peers, fearing that they would harbor hidden intentions and harm me."

Mu Yuze pursed his lips tightly. He had no idea what to say except, "My deep condolences... for what happened to your brother."

"Nah," Sirius waved him off in a nonchalant manner, but Mu Yuze keenly noticed that a subtle tremor lingered in the tail end of his voice. "It’s been seven years, and I’ve even avenged him. He would mock me endlessly if he knew that I’m still moping until now. Anyway, that’s not what I wanted to say," he ruffled his hair in frustration.

He dropped his gaze to the floor, each word seemed like they had been forced out of the deepest chamber of his throat. "It’s just... can you help me relay my apology to XIU? Back then, I unthinkingly... said a few harsh words to him. It wasn’t my intention, but it seems like I gave him the impression that I’m blaming him for Marius’ death..." Rubbing his face roughly, Sirius turned to face him. Perhaps it was because his movement was too rough, but the rims of his eyes were a little red. "I’m afraid that he’s still blaming himself until now, so can you tell him that... none of it was ever his fault? I see him as my brother too, so I... I don’t want him to be trapped in the past anymore..."

Why don’t you tell him yourself? Mu Yuze wanted to ask.

However, when he looked into those moist and vulnerable blue eyes, he ended up swallowing the question back into his throat. Somehow, he felt like he could understand what Sirius was feeling. Sometimes, the more precious someone was to you, the more difficult it was to bare your honest, raw feelings for them. 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎

But of course, it was different for each person. In Mu Yuze’s case, he preferred to convey his thoughts and emotions with his own mouth.

"... Alright," he agreed, causing Sirius’ eyes to brighten. "I will relay your message to him, but still... I think he will be much happier if you tell him yourself."

Sirius appeared conflicted. "I..."

"He has mentioned you and your brother to me a few times," Mu Yuze added, catching the other person off guard. "And each time, he always talked about you two fondly."

"R–Really?" Sirius’ lips pulled up into an uncontrollable smile, yet at the same time it also seemed like he was about to cry. But soon, he turned his head away and rubbed his nose, sniffling, "Well, that’s all I want to say. I can’t bring myself to say something so sappy to him, so I’d appreciate your help. Congratulations on becoming a bonded pair. You two complement each other so well."

Without giving Mu Yuze a chance to respond, he walked away, only to stop and turn around again. He pointed at Mu Yuze’s pocket and said, "Remember to check the contacts in your phone."

His contacts?

Confused, Mu Yuze retrieved his phone, but before he could check it, Sirius once again paused and added, almost as an afterthought. "Oh, that’s right. There was this one time when I threw AX-03 to his face because I was annoyed with him forgetting me and Marius. Tell him I’m sorry too, ’kay? I’m repenting right now."

After saying that, Sirius marched away with a satisfied look of someone who had cast off the burden on his shoulders, leaving Mu Yuze utterly stupefied and dumbfounded.

Wait a moment, that brief accident when He Juan had almost gone feral, momentarily losing all of his memories— it was Sirius’ doing?!

Mu Yuze was completely surprised by this revelation, as he had believed that the mastermind back then was Ku Jin. So the culprit was this little brat all along!

Taking a deep breath, Mu Yuze attempted to regain his bearings, his mind still struggling to process the shocking disclosure. Once he calmed down, he shifted his attention to the phone in his hand and scrolled through his list of contacts. His finger eventually halted on an unfamiliar name, which he was certain did not exist before.
