Chapter 689: Not Enough?

He Juan opened his eyes in a daze, his mind sluggish. For a while, he couldn’t even remember his own name, let alone what he was doing prior to this. He only felt discomfort pulsating throughout his whole body, and his Alpha was strangely restless.

As his vision cleared, a familiar ceiling greeted him.

This... is my room in the villa? Why am I here?

A sharp hiss escaped him when a surge of searing pain gripped his skull, seemingly as if his sensitive nerves were being electrocuted. He squeezed his eyes shut and clutched his head with a groan, and it was then that he sensed a presence by his side.

A straw was inserted into his lips, and he instinctively sucked, allowing the cool liquid to flow down his throat. He felt much better in an instant, and even the headache did not feel as terrible anymore.

Turning his head, he was rewarded by the sight of Mu Yuze gazing at him with concern, and upon catching the bruise blooming on the omega’s cheek, a torrent of memories flooded his mind like a tsunami wave. It was all so overwhelming that He Juan felt his vision blacken for a split second.

That’s right, his Xiao Ze had gone missing during their visit to Heping Nursing Home, prompting him to give chase all the way to the abandoned building. And then...

"Juan-gege?" Mu Yuze’s concerned voice echoed tentatively.

Oh, He Juan hadn’t realized how much he had missed hearing the omega’s voice until now. He abruptly sat up, catching Mu Yuze off guard. His hand hovered around the omega, unsure where to touch. "Are you... are you okay?" He swallowed past the heavy lump on his throat. "I–I’m so sorry, my mind was a mess back then. I... I didn’t hurt you or anything, right?"

He attempted to assess Mu Yuze’s condition, but it was proven difficult because the omega was wearing a long-sleeved shirt and pajama trousers, rendering him unable to discern anything.

Mu Yuze gently took his hand and laced their fingers together. "I’m fine," he reassured softly, though his eyes seemed strangely subdued. "Nothing happened to me. Gege, you don’t remember anything, do you?"

He Juan numbly shook his head. "I remember confronting Ku Jin. I... I wanted to go to you, but a lot of people were blocking my way..." After that, everything turned hazy in his mind, almost as if he was dreaming. All he could recall was the sorrow, despair, and hopelessness when he couldn’t find his mate anywhere. Those negative emotions consumed him, giving birth to a rage and murderous intent he thought had been buried within him since he lost He Xie...

He Juan’s complexion blanched. He recalled seeing the police, though he was unsure whether it was reality or his imagination speaking. Had he confronted them? Oh no, what if he killed them—

A pair of hands cupped his face tenderly, snapping He Juan out of his stupor. He instinctively raised his head to meet Mu Yuze’s eyes, seeing his own reflection within them. "Don’t worry, Gege. Everything is okay."

Mu Yuze proceeded to tell him how he had been rescued by Chen Youzhi in the nick of time, and how he had gone to search for He Juan and managed to bring his feral state under control. When the building went up in flames, Ye Qiu took advantage of the chaos to seize them and bring them here.

"You have been unconscious for an entire day. The doctor stressed that... you are not allowed to take any medicine in your current state, especially not rut suppressors. Your loss of control this time has caused your pheromones to become unstable, so you should let yourself relax. Don’t worry, Miss Ye and Mr. Chen have evacuated the house; it’s just the two of us here."

He Juan pressed a hand against his temple as he struggled to process all the information. "The building... burned? What happened to Ku Jin, Jia Molei and Luo Xuan? Oh right, where is Zhong Yun?"

Mu Yuze pressed his lips into thin lines. "I don’t know."

"You... don’t?" He Juan blinked in surprise.

"I don’t," he stated in an almost indifferent tone. "I lost my phone, and I am not interested in the outside news. With you lying in front of me, unconscious, how could I have the mind to care about anything else?" Tremor laced into his tone as he retorted, the rims of his eyes reddening. "I– I was so afraid that..." 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

Only God knew what kind of the emotional storm was wreaking havoc in his chest as he sat by He Juan’s bedside, staring at the rise and fall of the man’s chest as if possessed. After learning the truth, he suddenly felt afraid, so afraid that He Juan would cease breathing if he were to look away. He could barely heave a sigh of relief after seeing He Juan open his eyes. The dread and apprehension that he had been enduring all this time was unspeakable, and it was taking a huge toll on him, making him feel so suffocated.

He wanted to scream, to cry, to vent all his sadness and grievance, so much that his chest felt like it might burst apart.

Still oblivious, He Juan only thought that Mu Yuze was anxious after witnessing his feral state. Feeling distressed for his mate, He Juan gently tugged him closer and reached out a hand to caress his cheek, careful not to aggravate the bruise. "I’m so sorry, Xiao Ze..." he whispered in pain. "I scared you, didn’t I? I’m sorry, it will not happen again."

Mu Yuze shook his head. "No, it’s not like that..." he forced out through his constricted throat. Unable to control himself any longer, a string of tears rolled down his cheeks, and it was such a shocking sight that He Juan sucked in a breath, stunned.

"I– I heard..." Mu Yuze finally revealed the truth, his lips wobbling. "I heard everything from Mr. Chen."

He Juan’s heart thudded in his chest for reasons unknown. "...What?"

"Everything that happened to you seven years ago... I know it all."

That one sentence was akin to a heavy blow to He Juan’s head, leaving him reeling in shock. Mu Yuze... knew everything? As in everything? He opened his lips, yet no words came out. His mind was still grappling with the sudden development, but even more shocking than that was the sight of Mu Yuze breaking down into tears in front of him.

Rivulets of water cascaded down his pale cheeks, while his black-blue eyes were brimming with excruciating agony.

"Why...?" He asked in a whisper. "Why did you have to do that? Why did you want to leave? Am I..." a sob escaped his lips. He pulled his hand out of He Juan’s grasp in lieu of burying his face within them, his thin shoulders shaking. At that moment, he looked so small and fragile as if he would shatter at the slightest touch. "Am I not enough, Gege...?"

He wept inconsolably, his cries oh so sorrowful and agonizing that it was tearing He Juan’s heart into shreds. "Am I not enough of a reason for you to live?"
