Chapter 680: You Can’t Kill Me

"Sure," Ku Jin flashed a confident grin. "Go ahead and shoot me, Molei. But I know you won’t be able to do it."

Even when being held at gunpoint, his posture remained casual and carefree. He even had the gall to tuck his hands in his pocket, lifting a challenging brow at Jia Molei! Everything this person did— from his demeanor, his body language, his words to the subtle shift of his expression— infuriated Jia Molei to no end, turning him into an active volcano on the verge of erupting.

Angry veins pulsed on his forehead as he growled, "Wipe that cocky smirk off your face, you bastard!"

Did this person really not fear death at all? Or was he so confident that Jia Molei wouldn’t be able to pull the trigger?!

As if splashing cold water in the pot of boiling oil, Ku Jin willingly spread his arms, urging Jia Molei to carry out the act. He looked absolutely gleeful as he reveled in the fury burning in Jia Molei’s eyes.

Jia Molei’s grip tightened around the gun, his knuckles turning white. How many times had he imagined themselves in this position? It was not only once or twice, but rather countless times.

Countless times had he imagined himself killing this son of a bitch and freeing the world from pure evil.

But as Ku Jin had pointed out earlier, he would have done it much earlier if he could. Somehow, Jia Molei couldn’t bring himself to take that final step. Why? He questioned himself. Was it because he was feeling reluctant on the account of their past together? Did he, against all reason, still harbor the foolish hope that this person could mend his ways?

All around them, the sounds of fierce battle rang out. No, calling it a battle wasn’t accurate— it was a full-blown siege.

Jia Molei could no longer count how many people had attacked He Juan; they were endless, pouring out of the emergency staircase like a relentless tide. With each person He Juan knocked down, two more would emerge. By now, a hill of bodies had formed over He Juan’s feet, yet the siege did not show signs of stopping.

Jia Molei felt extremely disgusted by Ku Jin’s tactics.

Whether it was back then or now, this person hadn’t changed at all. He still liked to resort to these dirty and lowly tricks to deplete his enemy’s strength and allow them to taste pure despair as they desperately struggled to break free. Perhaps it made him feel like an indifferent spectator watching over a fight, or a powerful deity that ruled over another’s fate. One thing for sure, it offered him extreme bliss and pleasure.

This was the way Ku Jin was, and most likely he would not ever change.

So what was Jia Molei still hoping for?

Upon noticing Jia Molei’s silence, Ku Jin’s grin widened. "See?" He boldly stepped forward and grabbed the muzzle of the gun, directing it to his forehead. "You can’t kill me, Molei. You never can."

Jia Molei tensed for a second, then much to the Manipulator’s surprise, his stance relaxed. When he raised his head, there was no longer any hint of anger within his eyes – or any emotions, in that matter. They were calm and tranquil in a way Ku Jin had never seen before, as if... as if he had come to terms with something. And the realization wiped the obnoxious smile from Ku Jin’s face.

"You know," Jia Molei began. "There was a period of time when I was truly fond of you. I liked how unruly and uncontrollable you are. I liked the thrill and anticipation you brought me. Perhaps, I even liked you, despite knowing that you’re a little piece of shit." He huffed, a self-deprecating smile on his face.

"Molei—" Ku Jin hurried to say, but Jia Molei interrupted him, his tone steady and unhurried.

"But again and again, you violated my privacy when I wasn’t yet ready to show you. And when I refused, you got violent. Did it ever occur to you that, perhaps, I would open up eventually if you gave me time?" He stared directly into Ku Jin’s eyes, who appeared genuinely surprised and taken aback by this unexpected confession. "No, it never did. Because you don’t know how— you don’t know how to cherish and treasure. All you know is that if you want to own something, you have to destroy it."

"Own..." Jia Molei let out a mirthless scoff. "That’s right, you only know how to ’own’. I tried to understand you, Ku Jin. I tried really hard to understand where you’re coming from. And I finally got it."

Ku Jin’s black and bottomless pupils remained fixated on him – his lips, every word he spoke, his expression. He was like a child full of wonder after seeing something new.

"You tried to make me return your feelings, but you didn’t know how, and our mutual relationship soured. I ended up hating you to the bones, but you’re fine with it, because at least I still harbored some ’emotions’ toward you. I still have you in my mind. This way, you can bind me to you forever. Am I right?"

Ku Jin tilted his head. "Are you?" he questioned back. "I don’t know. Why are you making things so complicated, Molei? I want you – only you. As simple as that. And I will do anything to obtain you, even if it means I have to break your legs so you can’t run away from me."

Upon hearing those domineering and nonsensical words, Jia Molei no longer erupted into anger like he usually did.

Instead, he smiled. Jia Molei very, very rarely smiled, and that subtle curve of his lips caught Ku Jin utterly off guard, leaving him momentarily dazed. It seemed like once, Jia Molei had also smiled at him like this. But it had been such a long, long time that he had forgotten it altogether, and all that remained in his memory was the crimson-haired man’s anger, hatred and disgust.

"It’s such a pity," Jia Molei sighed. "I understood you too late. Now, I’m too tired to even hate you, Ku Jin. I, for the first time in my life, no longer feel anything for you."

Ku Jin’s pupils shook violently. "Molei..."

He could see it now. Within Jia Molei’s eyes, there was no longer any reflection of him. Those placid eyes stared at him indifferently... as if he was a stranger.

"Goodbye, Ku Jin."

After saying those words, Jia Molei pulled the trigger.
