Chapter 665: No Such Person

The next few days passed in a blur as the local police and the Interpol worked seamlessly to track down the Master Manipulator.

On the night when the black Volkswagen was captured on CCTV, the traffic police did not sleep a wink as they turned the whole city upside down, chasing after Ku Jin’s trail like a madman.

Ku Jin, on the other hand, did not seem to expect that his presence would be exposed so soon. He drove boldly across the city, allowing the police to mark his routes easily. To no one’s surprise, the license plate was unregistered, thus they could only focus on chasing after the car. In the end, after following Ku Jin to spin around the city twice and even losing him on a few occasions, they discovered his car parked in the lot of an old apartment building.

Without delay, officers were dispatched to the location to apprehend him!

The old apartment was surrounded. The entrances were heavily guarded, as the police spread out to check the rooms one by one. It was a small five-story building, housing a total of twenty rooms, and thus it did not take a long time for the police to inspect them.

Their pursuit led them to a room on the third floor furthest from the staircase. According to the landlord, the tenant in this room was an ordinary man in his thirties who brought his sick and paralyzed brother along. The landlord claimed that he did not have a good look of the sick brother, while the tenant’s face was so unremarkable that he couldn’t recall any prominent features that could be used to identify him. Under the police’s fierce questioning, he finally recalled something and stuttered out,

"I–I remember...! A few days ago, a young woman visited his place. I–I was curious, so I stared at her a bit longer... that’s all! I’m not involved in whatever trouble he’s in!"

"A young woman?" The investigator echoed with furrowed brows. "What can you remember about her? Tell me everything!"

It was apparent that compared to the two inconspicuous men, the woman left a more lasting impression on the middle-aged man. After fumbling for a bit, he was able to recount her appearance clearly, "She looks in her mid-twenties, with a delicate and oval face. Her hair is quite long, almost reaching her waist, and she has a pair of gentle eyes. When she saw me, she stopped and greeted me politely..."

The investigators exchanged glances, silently communicating with their eyes. Then one of them pulled out a portrait from the folder they’re carrying and placed it in front of the landlord, asking, "Is this her?"

The landlord’s eyes widened in shock and excitement. "Yes, yes, that’s her! Officers, that’s really the woman I saw!"

As expected, the one who visited the room was none other than Nurse Yu— or more precisely, Ku Jin in disguise!

At the same time, the Interpol also made some progress. With their focus limited to a certain area, they locked onto a drug cartel in the United States suspected to be the sole distributor of the drug. It was unknown what method they used, but they managed to obtain the ledger.

As a newly circulated drug with limited production, the price for each packet would undoubtedly be exorbitant, and only a certain group of people would be able to afford it. After eliminating the suspects one by one, the Interpol eventually zeroed in on a local American named Andrew, whose obscure identity set him apart from the usual clientele.

Andrew seemed like he had appeared out of thin air one day and claimed that he was running an errand on behalf of his Boss, expressing immense interest in the drug. He offered to purchase it with double the price, and after he did, he once again vanished without a trace.

No matter from which angle one inspected it, this man spelled trouble, and upon deeper investigation, the Interpol found out that his identity was a fake and such a person wasn’t even registered in the country’s database!

The Interpol issued an immediate alarm. Over half of their available agents were dispatched to track Andrew’s activities. Alas, it had been a few months, and Andrew’s appearance was so ordinary that he had long since faded from people’s memory.

This stealth, anti-reconnaissance ability, mysterious appearance and seemingly weak presence... who could it be if not Ku Jin?!

With the chains of evidence completed, the city bureau swiftly issued an arrest warrant, enabling the impatient officers to break into the room in the old apartment building. No one’s surprised that it was empty. However, they were taken aback to find obvious traces of life around the room such as the takeaway boxes, the clothes in the wardrobe, bathing essentials in the bathroom, and so on. There was even a long chain with one end embedded to the wall with unknown purposes.

"Good," the leader of the investigation team declared with resolute eyes. "Bring all the samples, do not leave a single item untouched!"

At his order, the field officers, clad in protective gear, poured into the room and got down to business. They collected the eating utensils, clothes, hair on the floor, fingerprints, footprints— literally everything they could find. The samples were immediately sent to the forensic center, and the results came out a few hours later.

One of the most obvious DNA was found on the chain which contained traces of blood and broken skin, and they belonged to none other than Jia Molei!

At this point, the police could finally confirm that they had found the right place, and the apparent trails meant that Ku Jin had left the place in a hurry and had no time to erase his tracks!

"What about the second one?" Li Zhi asked. "Did you find out anything about Ku Jin?"

"Well, we found a few strands of his hair in the drain, and the blood on the chain is mixed, suggesting that a fight might have taken place. From that evidence, we managed to extract the second person’s DNA, but..." the forensic officer trailed off with an uncertain look, prompting Li Zhi to urge impatiently.

"But what?"

"But... we couldn’t find a match in the database, Captain," the officer replied. "There’s no such person in our country."

"What?!" Members of the Violent Crime, who were listening in on the report, exclaimed in shock.

"How could this be?! Do you make a mistake somehow??"

"Wait, what if this bastard is of foreign nationality? It can explain why there’s no record in our database!"

"That is indeed possible," another argued. "But how do we narrow it down? Do you mean to say we have to run a search on every country’s database?! It will be like searching for a needle in a haystack!"

"Then what should we do?!"

"A foreigner... yes, that’s one possibility," Li Zhi mused, causing the ruckus to die down in an instant. "It will be such a hassle if that’s the case. But have you forgotten? There’s also another group of people who wouldn’t be registered in any country’s database. They’re born like wild grass, overlooked and ignored. And when they die, it’s like a small flame being extinguished, leaving no trace behind."

The officers were dumbfounded. "W–Who are you talking about, Captain?"

Sighing, Li Zhi pinched his brows and said, "Beggars."
