Chapter 663: Stay Over

A hint of awkwardness lingered in the air after the somberness passed.

Mu Yuze was not talkative to begin with, so he stayed silent after conveying his apology. Meanwhile, Zhong Yun looked as if he did not know what to say to his friend who had become a police officer. It was a cool and legal occupation, as opposed to the pathetic state he ended up in.

Putting everything else aside, he was bound to feel some mortification and embarrassment, unable to bring himself to meet Mu Yuze’s eyes for fear of seeing the judgment or repulsion within. He had no idea that Mu Yuze had visited him once before and saw him in his worst state.

Time had changed, and they could no longer go back to the way they were before— two young and vigorous students whose life revolved around school, extracurricular activities and fun outings. Before, they could laugh freely under the sun and talk about everything and anything until late hours.

But now, with this murder case between them, any words seemed inconsequential.

Unable to endure the silence any longer, Zhong Yun rose to his feet, scratched his head and stammered, "I–I will excuse myself first, then. Good night, everyone."

He had just walked for a few steps when Mu Yuze called out to him, "Zhong Yun."

Pausing, Zhong Yun turned and gave him a questioning look. Mu Yuze walked over and stuffed a small and thin item into his hands, and when Zhong Yun lowered his head, he found that it was the other person’s name card. It was a simple white colored card with the three bold characters ’Mu Yuze’ printed, and below was a string of numbers.

"Let’s catch up sometime. If you need something, no matter what it is, just give me a call."

The tips of Zhong Yun’s fingers shook as he held the name card, which felt strangely burning in his hands. Concealing his reddened eyes, he nodded with a soft ’mn’ before adding, a faint tremor in his voice, "Thank you..."

Mu Yuze watched the man’s thin and hunched back until he vanished into the hallway, then he returned to his seat beside He Juan, sighing wistfully.

"Still okay?" He Juan asked, grasping his hand and bringing it into his mouth for a kiss.

"Mm-hmm." Despite his answer, he leaned his head against He Juan’s shoulders as if seeking comfort. He Juan’s heart was so tickled by his spoiled and dependent demeanor that he almost lifted Mu Yuze onto his lap and cuddled him. But before he could act on his desire, the front door swung open a bit and Ye Qiu stepped in, carrying with her the chill from the air outside.

In an instant, Mu Yuze straightened up, his posture tense and guarded.

Slightly amused yet distressed, He Juan stroked the omega’s knuckles with his thumb and opened his mouth to introduce the two of them. "Xiao Ze, this is Ye Qiu. And Ye Qiu, this is Mu Yuze, my mate." In order to soothe his tense omega, He Juan spoke a few more words, "Ye Qiu has helped us a lot by gathering information about the ’Secret Killer’. Without her, I wouldn’t have been able to help you."

Ye Qiu nodded in acknowledgement and took a seat on the couch across them, careful not to make any sudden movement that could startle the omega. "It’s all a coincidence," she said. "Who could have guessed that the Manipulator would use that drug to kill people in this country? He only has himself to blame."

"Thank you for your help," Mu Yuze expressed sincerely.

"There’s no need to thank me," she said, a hint of amusement in her eyes. "I’m doing this to repay XIU for saving my life."

Mu Yuze slowly nodded as He Juan’s statement flashed through his mind. Not only had he destroyed the secret facilities which were considered forsaken cages for these people, he had also offered them shelter. And most importantly, he gave them freedom, security and a second chance of life. After thinking it through, Mu Yuze could understand where Ye Qiu was coming from, and why she would go to such lengths to help He Juan. After all, wasn’t he also one of the people who had been ’saved’ by the Alpha?

As expected, Juan-gege is really awesome...

Feeling strangely emotional, Mu Yuze squeezed He Juan’s hand tighter – a gesture that did not go unnoticed by Ye Qiu’s keen eyes. Her lips tugged into a faint mirthful smile, causing her cold and stern countenance to soften. "You’re wary of me, but not him?" she teased. "Let me tell you, he’s a much more dangerous person than I am. I’ve seen so many omegas terrified by his presence, crying and bawling their eyes out whenever he so much as approached them. But you don’t seem afraid at all. Is it because you’re his mate?"

"Ye Qiu..." He Juan palmed his forehead exasperatedly. 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢

"I’m not," Mu Yuze replied firmly, gazing straight into her eyes. "I have and will never be afraid of him."

Juan-gege had never done anything to hurt him, so why must he be afraid?

His passionate declaration earned him a soft adoring smile from He Juan, and a mildly disgusted eye roll from Ye Qiu. "I can’t watch this any longer." Standing up, she told them, "It’s late. I should return before my brothers come to drag me back."

Chen Youzhi asked in surprise, "Didn’t you say you will be staying over?"

"Nah," Ye Qiu waved a dismissive hand. "Do you think I can stay in the same house as him when he’s in this state?" She cast a pointed look at He Juan, whose smile remained unfazed. It left Mu Yuze puzzled. What state was she talking about? Did something happen to He Juan?

Chen Youzhi got up to send Ye Qiu off, leaving He Juan and Mu Yuze alone in the living room. Unable to hold back his curiosity, Mu Yuze inquired tentatively, "What is she talking about?"

He Juan chuckled, stood up and pulled Mu Yuze to his feet as well, leading him toward the staircase. "It’s nothing. You know that we are naturally territorial. It will be uncomfortable for an Alpha to stay in another Alpha’s territory." Even more so when the said Alpha was entering his rut period, was what He Juan did not say but Mu Yuze heard it nonetheless.

He Juan added, "Both of our natural instincts are stronger than average, so we will only repel each other if we stay in the same space."

"Ah..." Mu Yuze exclaimed softly in realization. The two of them climbed up to the second floor, and Mu Yuze inquired upon noticing the rows of closed doors along the hallway. "Are you..." he changed his words in a split second, swallowing, "Are we going to stay over?"

He Juan nodded with a smile. "It’s dangerous for you to drive back at such a late hour. Stay here for a night and I will send you to work tomorrow."

Mu Yuze did not tell how he’d gotten used to working late and returning home at wee hours in the morning. He liked this – the warm and considerate attention He Juan showed him. It made him feel all ticklish and fuzzy inside, and he had to resist the urge to smile.

Soon, they stopped in front of a room at the end of the hallway. He Juan pushed it open, revealing a minimalistic yet cozy room with light brown wallpaper. The bed had traces of being slept on, and it was apparent whom this room belonged to.

"Come in," He Juan invited him with a smile. "I have something to show you."
