Chapter 566: A Little Distraction

He Juan could not decide whether to be relieved or disappointed that no police came knocking on the door for the next few days. Perhaps deep down, he was harboring hope that the country’s law enforcement had improved leaps and bounds after the implementation of Liang Yuanjun’s new laws.

When he voiced his lament to Chen Youzhi, he received a speechless look in return. "...From what I know, they have expressed their intention to meet you a few times since your return, especially the Yuyang Municipal Bureau which you’ve had some contact with recently."

He Juan was puzzled. "Why haven’t I heard anything about this?"

After a little digging, He Juan finally uncovered the truth.

Since his whereabouts remained unknown, the police could only extend their inquiry to Prime Minister Liang, who was confirmed to be in contact with him. Alas, every single time, Liang Yuanjun would turn them down politely by saying that He Juan still needed a lot of rest and she would get back to them once she received news from him. But in fact, she didn’t even have any intention of passing the message to He Juan in the first place.

And just like that, the police’s requests were effectively blocked from reaching his ears.

They couldn’t even issue an arrest warrant because they had no solid evidence against him.

After learning the full course of events, He Juan truly had no idea whether to laugh or cry. He was kinda touched by how fiercely protective Liang Yuanjun was toward him, but at the same time he also felt a tinge of sympathy for the police because he could imagine how maddening it must have been for them.

"What’s your plan, Boss?" Chen Youzhi inquired. "Do you want to meet the police? Or... would you like to enlist their help to catch Ku Jin? After all, except for a few of us, your former subordinates have all moved on with their lives and we’re severely lacking in manpower."

"No," He Juan refused in a heartbeat, his tone harsh. Upon realizing how he had overreacted, he paused for a second before adding in a softer tone, "I have no intention of involving the police in our affairs."

He could still remember the last time he tried this method, only for it to end in bitter tragedy. He had tried not to revisit that event too many times, but the mere mention of Yuyang Municipal Bureau would always take him back to that heart-wrenching winter night when he lost his brother. That was the very first time He Juan had come so close to losing control of his Alpha, and he was not keen on experiencing it again for the second time. Perhaps this was the reason why he subconsciously avoided having anything to do with the police.

Sighing, He Juan finally decided to maintain the status quo for the time being. "Forget it, just tell them that I’m not well," he huffed. "Besides, I don’t even know what I should do if they really come to me. Didn’t you mention that Luo Xuan is currently under police supervision? Just keep an eye on them for now. I’m sure Ku Jin will make a move sooner or later."

"Roger, Boss."

"On another note..." He Juan continued, trying not to show anything on his face. "How is the progress of the investigation? Do you still need more time?"

Chen Youzhi’s expression turned slightly troubled. "Well... Doctor Jia has been really meticulous in covering your tracks, so it’s a little difficult to dig out your background."

As expected of Jia Molei. He Juan should have expected it as the man never did things in a half-assed manner. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦

Moreover, gathering intelligence was not Chen Youzhi’s area of expertise. Asking him to compile seven years of someone’s life in less than a week was just too cruel and demanding. For now, He Juan could only pray that Jia Molei was still safe and sound, and he was sensible enough to lay low and avoid provoking that madman.

Heaving a forlorn sigh, he couldn’t help but wonder, "If only we had a hacker by our side, this would be much easier— wait," he suddenly recalled something and straightened up. "A–Mu’s disciple. I remember A–Mu had one disciple, what’s his name again? Kang... Kang..."

He tried to dig deep into his memory, yet it was all for naught. He could no longer remember that teenager’s name or even what he looked like. All that remained was the vague impression that the boy had a smile bright enough to light up the whole room.

Seeing that He Juan suddenly became lost in thought, Chen Youzhi carefully inquired, "A–Mu’s disciple? Do you want to find him, Boss?"

"How can I do that when I can’t even remember anything about him?" He Juan let out a helpless sigh, pinching his brows. "I know for sure that his surname is Kang, but not his full name. It will be like searching for a needle in a haystack. Moreover, he is an outsider. I don’t want to drag him into this mess and get him implicated. Forget it, let’s just hire someone from the black market if you still can’t find anything soon."

Chen Youzhi nodded in acquiescence.

From the moment he moved into the new penthouse, He Juan had refused to go out, claiming that he would take the time to recover. However, Chen Youzhi could tell that he was getting more and more frustrated with the blank patches in his memory.

Concerned that this would trigger He Juan’s depression, he couldn’t help but suggest, "Why don’t you go out for a bit, Boss? If I am not mistaken, Mr. Han owns an extremely famous club called Phoenix Ablaze. He has a popular event coming up in a few days, so you should go and have a look if you’re free."

A club? He Juan let out an involuntary scoff. Did he look like someone who would spend his time in a club?

The words of refusal were thick on the tip of He Juan’s tongue, but he held them back before he could blurt it out. He knew that Chen Youzhi was proposing this out of genuine concern for his mental well-being, and if he could be completely honest, he indeed felt like on the brink of losing his mind trying to recollect his past without any success.

Either way, he had nothing to do as he waited for the investigation results from Chen Youzhi. Perhaps a little distraction would actually do him good.

"When will the event be held?" He finally conceded.
