Chapter 619: -Chapter 619-

Eaton’s reaction to Mafia King Asher’s blunt response was surprisingly calm, considering how strung up the Alpha had been about the matter.

Shaun was just glad to leave Haines, he didn’t step into the city if he could help it, an expression of detached disinterest on his face as he took in the sights on the way to the airport.

Eaton’s calm reaction didn’t bode well for him, he had a feeling that he would be returning to Haines in a short time. It displeased him to no end.

"Are you going to tell the others about this?" Jael brought up long after lunch was over, and Caspian had already returned to the mansion.

It was already late in the afternoon, the day swiftly coming to an end.

Asher looked like he had completely forgotten about the unwanted visit he had gotten that morning. "Sure, send them a fax or something." He quipped, making a shooing motion with his hands.

Jael’s lips quirked at that, heading for the door - he needed to make a couple calls.

Davian and Nikolai’s reactions were surprise, then unease. Asher catching the High Council’s attention after what happened was expected, what was unexpected was them making such a big deal out of it.

There was nothing that could be done just then though, Asher had turned them down, there was no chance of the Mafia King going back on his word.

Maybe it was because Jael had nothing to fear, to the other Mafia Kings, the visit had to be terrible news. Because if a Mafia King sided with the High Council, the odds would drastically shift.

Today it was Asher, it could be anyone next. Did they intend to pick at their temporary alliance until it fell apart?

He returned to Asher’s side to keep him company until it was time to leave. It had been a slow day, maybe it was the season, but the days seemed slower, quieter, dimmer.

Despite how slow it seemed, he was soon driving Asher back to the mansion. Although it was ironic, Asher ran the nightlife of Haines, yet recently, the Mafia King was already at home as soon as it got dark, chasing the sunset to get back to his mate.

Caspian was waiting on the stairs when they returned, wrapped in a fluffy knitted sweater, his blonde hair a halo around his pretty face. The Omega looked like he had something to say, just like Asher did.

Jael wished they didn’t go through the trouble, tempted to take the week off that Asher had generously offered him.

He made himself scarce after dinner, driving around to do a personal check-in on the clubs that had gotten hit up by the High Council. His presence reassured the men, and it spared him from having to spend the night with his worries.

He had tried Gage’s phone a handful of times more, but the response was still the same - there was no response.

By the time he returned to the mansion, it was well past midnight, but Caspian was waiting for him in the foyer. The Omega stood up from the corner sofa he had been waiting on, his relief palpable in his glassy eyes.

"Asher is already asleep, you should get some rest too." He simply said, turning away to start up the stairs without even giving Jael the opportunity to scold him for staying up so late when it was so cold.

He waited in the foyer until he could no longer see Caspian, only then did he start up the stairs, heading right for his room to take a steaming hot shower. When he got out, there was a tray of warm milk next to his bed. It made his jaw hurt and his eyes sting.

A short while later, he was fast asleep, the glass of milk sitting empty on the tray.

The next morning, Jael was set to leave early, but not early enough to stop Caspian from feeding him breakfast before he left.

As soon as Jael left, Caspian focused on himself, getting ready to hang out with his best friend.

He had already told Asher about spending the weekend at Lake’s, so when his mate stuck to him like sticky rice as he was getting ready to leave, he narrowed his eyes. "What are you doing?"

"Tagging along," Asher replied shamelessly, "I’ll drive you there."

Caspian didn’t argue, Jael did say he should keep an eye on him. He would sic his mate on Davian while he had a fun time with Lake - he really hoped that Angelo would be able to make it.

"Fine," He sighed, reminded when he was strapped into the passenger’s seat that his mate hadn’t kept good his word to teach him how to drive.

Caspian didn’t bring it up, he intended to learn, regardless. There was no reason to get Asher entangled in his plans, it would only complicate things.

He listened to Asher ramble on about the few times he had shown off his dancing prowess before he realized that his mate thought the invitation extended to him.

"It’s an Omega-only dance session, no Alphas allowed." He said ruthlessly, getting down from the car without waiting for Asher to open his door.

Lake was already waiting at the stairs, the Omega catching his attention instantly. So it left just Asher in the car, the Mafia King ditched in mere seconds.

Asher got out of his car with a sour expression, reminding himself that he had been the one to insist on tagging along.

Davian was also waiting on the stairs, but the Alpha remained outside, the both of them wearing matching expressions.

Inside the mansion, Lake and Caspian were already arm in arm, chatting as they went upstairs.

"My personal trainer won’t be by for a couple hours," Lake was saying, "I wish she would come earlier." He sighed.

"Nervous?" Caspian asked with an easy smile, patting his shoulder.

"A little," Lake admitted, he had invited his friends to have fun but it was mostly for moral support. He was more nervous than he let on.

"I’m sure it’s going to be as lighthearted as it seems," Caspian was quick to reassure him, "And if you don’t like it, you can just try something else."
