Can We Say No to Divorce?-Chapter 775 - 526 Extra: Scapegoat (1)
"Good! You all have been working hard too!" Gan Zi picked up his chopsticks.
Bai Ye began to speak, "We visited all the doctors and butchers in our town, and all of them have alibis. Since there’s no forensic pathologist in the town, there was virtually no progress in today’s investigation."
That was within Gan Zi’s expectation, "Among the villagers you visited, was there anyone who had previously lived in a big city and might have worked as a doctor, forensic pathologist or a butcher in a slaughterhouse?"
"Professor Gan, it would require a massive amount of manpower and resources to find that out," Bai Ye was somewhat distressed, "as you know, I was only assigned four people!"
Qiao Xiaoyan said, "Bai Ye, although it may take a while to investigate this way, I think Professor Gan makes sense. Think about it, what if someone had worked as a doctor, or a forensic pathologist, or a butcher while they were away? They’re familiar with such methods, and then they return to the village and continue to live as an ordinary and ordinary farmer – it’s possible!"
Gan Zi looked at the silhouette of the village chief outside and then said, "I know it requires a lot of manpower and resources. Bai Ye, you can start by convening a meeting with all the village chiefs, have a private talk with them. A village chief should know somewhat about who might have worked in these professions!"
"Right!" Bai Ye stood up immediately, "Professor Gan, enjoy your meal. I’ll go and communicate with the village chief right now."
Gan Zi looked at Qiao Xiaoyan, who propped her cheeks with her hands, then turned her gaze to Bai Ye outside. He smiled slightly but said nothing.
Or perhaps young love is very straightforward and simple, just like Qiao Xiaoyan and Bai Ye; it comes quickly and leaves quickly!
"Is it good?" Qiao Xiaoyan withdrew her gaze from Bai Ye, looking towards Gan Zi.
"Not bad!" Gan Zi nodded.
Qiao Xiaoyan looked at Gan Zi again, wondering if she should ask the question on her mind.
"What is it that you want to say but keep hesitating?" Gan Zi took a tissue, wiped his mouth, and then smiled, asking her.
Qiao Xiaoyan slightly curled her lips, "I wanted to ask you, with Ziyu and Su Tianqing gone, they are ex-husband and ex-wife, aren’t you worried they might..."
Gan Zi pulled out a cigarette and gently fiddled with it in his fingers for a moment before slowly lighting it.
"Ziyu is a decisive woman; she knows what kind of life she wants!" Gan Zi said, "Even if I leave her at the crime scene, her heart would still be worried about the matters at the craft field. Trust comes first in a relationship between lovers!"
"Heh, I’ve never been in a relationship," Qiao Xiaoyan touched her head, of course, she had had an unrequited love for Song Xuyao, which probably didn’t count as being in a relationship.
At that moment, Gan Zi stood up: "I need to go back to the crime scene, to take another look!"
"I’ll go too!" said Qiao Xiaoyan.
"Don’t you need to rest?" Gan Zi picked up his suit jacket.
Normally, seeing a man dressed smartly in a suit in this small village would be quite unusual.
However, Gan Zi’s presence was somehow very comforting.
Qiao Xiaoyan sighed, "I can’t sleep with the case unsolved, I just can’t stop."
As she walked with Gan Zi, he rarely spoke, focusing instead on the fields on either side of the path and the wisps of cooking smoke rising into the air.
"Professor Gan, do you have any ideas you could share with us?" Qiao Xiaoyan was an impatient person, she asked.
Gan Zi shook his head, "At the moment, this case seems simple, but it’s elusive. So, I have nothing to hide; I’ve already said all that needs to be said..."
Just then, his phone rang. He made an apologetic gesture and then answered the call.
The call was from the university, asking if he would schedule his classes for next week?
After a moment of silence, Gan Zi replied, "I will arrange it first, and get back to you."
Since there was no progress on the case, he had to continue teaching at the school, but leaving the case and walking away felt like betraying his conscience.
If he had to choose, he hoped to stay and solve the case here first, before returning.
As they walked, they reached the scene of the crime together.
They saw a figure sitting at the doorway, the midday sun shining on him, rendering his complexion extremely pale.
"It’s Chen Chen!" Qiao Xiaoyan exclaimed, "I’ll go over and talk to him!"
Qiao Xiaoyan approached and called out, "Chen Chen, would you like to have this?"
She produced some chocolate, tempting Chen Ju.
"I want it!" Chen Chen reached out to snatch it.
"You have to answer my question before I let you have it," Qiao Xiaoyan immediately hid it behind her back, "Tell me, what were you doing on the night of the 2nd this month?"
"What to do? What to do? What to do..." Chen Chen, with thoughts fixated on the chocolate and drooling for it, was unable to answer any of the questions posed by Qiao Xiaoyan.
Qiao Xiaoyan was more patient, "Your sister is back, what did she bring you? Did she say anything?"
"Sister..." Chen Chen looked around, then said to Qiao Xiaoyan: "Sister, give me chocolate..."
He mistook Qiao Xiaoyan for his own sister; although Qiao Xiaoyan was older than Chen Chen, and even older than Chen Hui, being a city-dweller who took good care of herself, she naturally looked younger than the country girls.
Qiao Xiaoyan felt sorry for him; since she couldn’t get any answers by questioning, she gave him the chocolate!
Chen Chen took the chocolate, unable to bring himself to eat it, then attempted to push the door open. However, someone was guarding the door to avoid disturbing the crime scene, and he petulantly cried out from outside: "Sister... Chocolate..."
Qiao Xiaoyan felt a tinge of sourness in her nose; in Chen Chen’s eyes, his sister was still present, and he wanted to share the chocolate with her.
But then, even a fool understands the preciousness of family affection.
Qiao Xiaoyan stamped her foot, "Who could be so cruel as to murder a young woman? It’s utterly detestable! If I can’t find the murderer, I won’t return to City A."
Gan Zi watched this scene, and even though he was deeply moved, he said nothing!
Perhaps the words spoken in youth don’t require deep thought; they’re just impulsive actions.
Qiao Xiaoyan said those words because she was young; she could leave everything in City A behind and then pursue the murderer with such persistence!
Gan Zi also questioned himself, given such a tragic incident, if they couldn’t solve the case within a week, would he leave or stay?
Is it true that the older one gets, the more one considers?
The answer is clear, yes.
His rationale for not narrowing the murderer’s age to under thirty was with reason; among their team members, only he was over thirty and he was the most mature in deliberation.
Of course, Su Tianqing was also over thirty, and he handled most things maturely, except in matters of love, where he was just like a petulant child!
"Love?" Gan Zi mulled over these two words repeatedly, could it be because of love?
Qiao Xiaoyan, with her acute hearing, caught these two words: "Professor Gan, you’re suggesting it was because of love that Chen Hui was killed? I have indeed seen such obsessive love before..."
"Let’s hear your opinion!" Gan Zi was always rational about love; he wanted to hear someone else’s perspective, "Tell me about that case, I’m all ears!"
Qiao Xiaoyan was somewhat troubled; she really didn’t want to bring up Song Xuyao!
Gan Zi looked at her, "If you don’t want to talk, then don’t!"
He was never one to put others in a difficult position, perhaps because of his own strength, he could always accommodate the weaknesses of others.
Qiao Xiaoyan said, "If it is of help to this case, then I might as well speak! There’s actually not much to it, do you know about Song Xuyao?"
