Calamity Messenger-Chapter 85: Release Note
It’s that time for the launch of a new book again.
In the past, people often asked why Tingri hasn’t started a new book for two years, saying things like how lazy he was.
Actually, I wrote many beginnings over these two years. But, how to say this, while I personally liked them, commercially there was no guarantee, probably reaching the level between "Azure" and "Death’s Substitute." But now I’m a big-time author, I have the baggage of being a big shot, and I’m somewhat too ambitious for my skills, so I kept rejecting them. Of course, taking a break really was a small reason, as every time I went out traveling with other authors, I felt so great not having to code words.
The inspiration for "Calamity Messenger" comes from the idea of ’gamifying the real world.’ There are quite a few books like this, and some are quite excellently written, but they didn’t capture the feeling I wanted in the later stages. The difference between an author and a reader is that when I find the author’s writing doesn’t match what I imagine, I write a book based on what I envision.
Much like how the inspiration for the ’Mechanician’s Manual’ came from Youzhu’s "Girl, You’re Not Right." A lot of creative impulses often arise from pointing fingers at other books.
This book is different from the previous ones, different in that all the female protagonists appear in the first Chapter. Because Yan Qing is not like Ash, the prison experimenter, nor the ace mechanician Le Yu, and not like Ren Suo who claims he doesn’t want to work but often encounters beautiful girls at work. He is a true introvert who refuses to leave the Thief’s House for safety reasons.
For such a stubborn type, you can only give him an encounter through a home invasion.
But there might be readers who would ask, Teacher Tingri, Teacher Tingri, why can’t the female protagonists appear one by one? First a pair, then a trio, then a quartet? It could work too, and it might be easier to write.
Good question—it’s because the only MMORPG I played is FF14, and in FF14, the smallest party requires four members, so the opening must have four characters. Since we have four characters, the other three teammates are best from three different countries, hence confirming the Three Central Plains Kingdoms’ worldview.
This story shows us that many settings don’t have deep structural meaning—sometimes, not even political maps—it’s just based on the minimum team count in an online game.
As I write this, I’m unsure what to write, so I glance back at the ’Mechanician’s Manual’ and realize——
The ’Mechanician’s Manual’ actually has no launch commentary.
Then I looked at ’Little World’ and found there is launch commentary, but——
It’s super embarrassing, please don’t go look, it’s practically a dark history.
