Broken Oath: I Left, He Regretted-Chapter 92: Serena Sawyer’s Lies Exposed
At this time, it was already close to noon, and Mrs. Ellison personally knocked on the door, inviting us to stay for lunch at their house.
I didn’t respond for Timothy, although I felt he didn’t deserve to eat at my house.
Timothy curled his lips self-deprecatingly and said to me in a low voice, "Forget it. If I stay here, your parents will feel uncomfortable."
After speaking, he opened the door and said to Mrs. Ellison, "We won’t stay. I’ll take Zoe out for a bit."
Mrs. Ellison was taken aback and looked at me, seemingly worried that Timothy might do something to me.
I gave her a reassuring look, wanting to take Timothy away to avoid any more trouble for my parents at the Ellison house.
So, we left the Ellison house together.
Just as we stepped out, he said, "I’ll have Nanny Lowell prepare some food. Or we can eat out."
"No need."
I replied coldly, "I’ll just go home and make something simple."
Timothy stopped in his tracks, frowned, and said, "You won’t even give me a chance to have a meal together? Do you hate me that much?"
Inwardly, I asked myself, what else?
But I was too tired to waste any more emotion on him and replied flatly, "Don’t worry. Since I promised to go in the afternoon, I’ll definitely be there. After all, I want to know the truth too."
After saying that, I got into my car and drove home.
Around 3 PM, I drove to The Xavier Manor.
By the time I arrived, Serena was already there.
As soon as I stepped into the foyer, I heard Timothy say to her, "Naomi’s belongings are with you, right? Keep them safe, don’t lose them."
"Don’t worry, Timothy. My mom and I cherish everything of my sister’s like treasures. They’re all kept perfectly at home; they won’t be lost."
Serena answered extremely naturally.
Timothy suddenly changed his tone and said, "Forget it, I’ll handle Naomi’s belongings myself!"
Serena froze for a moment, then asked in an anxious tone, "Timothy, didn’t you say before that seeing those things makes you upset? Why do you suddenly want to handle them yourself?"
"I miss her." Timothy’s voice carried a tinge of complexity as he said heavily, "I used to be afraid of not being able to move past seeing those things. Now... maybe it’s time to face it."
Serena’s words carried obvious avoidance, "But those things are in our house in Westmere. How about... I go back in a few days and bring them to you?"
"No need." Timothy interrupted her directly and took out his phone to dial, "I’ll have someone get them right now. There’s a familiar butler over there, it’s convenient."
"Timothy." Serena hastily stood up, steadied herself, and forced a calm change of tone, "I... I remembered wrong. It seems I brought some of the belongings back to the country, they’re in my storage room..."
Timothy’s gaze lingered on her face for two seconds, without exposing her panic, merely saying calmly, "Then have your household staff bring them over now."
Serena bit her lip and reluctantly agreed.
As she turned to make a call in the corner, she happened to see me standing at the entrance of the living room.
"You... why are you here?"
She watched me warily.
I looked at her calmly and said, "It’s none of your business."
Serena didn’t have the energy to get entangled with me, as Timothy was still waiting for Naomi’s belongings.
So, she gripped her phone tightly and moved to the side, her posture notably stiff.
Half an hour later, a servant from The Sawyer Family delivered a fine sandalwood box.
Timothy personally opened it, and inside were Naomi’s jewelry and many old items, neatly arranged.
His fingers brushed over those items, stopping when he saw the jewelry box.
"Are all the belongings here?"
Serena nodded and said, "Yes, they’re all here."
Timothy’s voice grew colder as he said, "Let me see the inventory of the belongings to check."
Serena’s face turned paler in an instant, and she hurriedly explained, "I... I just remembered, it seems I lost a pair of earrings."
Timothy’s gaze darkened visibly, and he said gloomily, "Those were Naomi’s personal items, how could they be lost? Over the years, she always had them with her."
Serena stammered, "It... it might have gotten lost accidentally while sorting through the belongings. I’ll search carefully later. My sister had so many things, it’s inevitable to overlook sometimes..."
Before she finished speaking, I took out the earring and placed it on the table, saying, "No need to look, it’s here."
Upon seeing the earring, Serena’s pupils contracted as if she had seen a ghost, she stepped back half a pace, her lips trembling, "How... how do you have this?"
"I found it." I looked directly at her, my tone sharp and undeniable, "You said the belongings were kept safe, now you changed your story saying they were lost. Why are you lying? How did a bedridden patient like Naomi open the window?"
Serena’s eyes instantly welled up with tears, and she turned to Timothy, sobbing, "Timothy, I’m not lying on purpose, I... I was just afraid you’d be sad! When I found out a pair of earrings was missing while sorting through the belongings, I searched everywhere frantically but just couldn’t find it. I thought if I told you, you’d recall my sister and be unable to sleep, overwhelmed with sadness, so I didn’t dare tell you."
She said this while wiping away tears, her shoulders slightly trembling, looking aggrieved and helpless.
I pressed on, "That day, did you see Naomi’s body with your own eyes? I heard from the nurse that because she fell from such a height, the body was unrecognizable."
Serena refuted, "Miss Ellison, what do you mean by this? Are you suggesting Naomi isn’t dead and that I’m falsely accusing you?"
At this point, she covered her face, crying, "That day, Timothy should’ve seen for himself how awful my sister looked! But he couldn’t bear to face it, so he let my mom and me handle everything. We could only cremate my sister’s body. I never thought that now, Miss Ellison would accuse me of such a grievous crime!"
I looked at Timothy incredulously.
He didn’t even see Naomi’s body?
How is this different from when I didn’t see my child’s body back then?
In life, one must see the person; in death, one must see the corpse.
He hadn’t even seen Naomi’s body, just listened to a few words from Serena. On what basis did he believe Naomi was truly dead?
Just as I was about to question him, Timothy coldly said, "Shut up. I don’t want to mention Naomi anymore..."
Bringing up that name clearly caused him pain.
I couldn’t help but wonder if Timothy had been deceived as well.
Just as he once lied to me that our child had died, secretly sending my child to be raised by someone else.
Now, fate has come full circle, and it’s his turn!
Timothy was still immersed in the sorrow of Naomi.
He held the earring in his hand and said coldly to Serena, "I hope everything you’ve said is the truth."
Serena’s voice trembled, but every word was firm, "It’s the truth, Timothy, I wouldn’t lie to you!"
Yet this time, it seemed he didn’t completely trust Serena, instead he said, "Tomorrow, you don’t need to accompany Doris abroad, take her to stay at my mom’s for a while instead."
Serena’s face flashed with shock, and she stepped forward urgently, "Timothy, why? I’ve already talked to Doris about it; she’s really looking forward to living abroad!"
Timothy Xavier’s voice was cold: "Doris is still too young; she’s alone overseas, I don’t feel at ease."
"I’ll take good care of her!" Serena urgently promised, "I’ll stay close by her side. Are you still worried about me?"
"You have your career," Timothy interrupted her, his tone calm but firm, "You can’t be revolving around Doris every day and neglect your work."
Serena began to seek sympathy, crying out, "My career has long been stagnant. The production crew of the new drama is deliberately making things difficult for me. These past few days, I’ve been getting bruised all over from learning figure skating. Rather than continuing like this, I’d rather devote my time to accompany Doris."
As she spoke, she showed Timothy her bruised arms and legs.
Timothy’s gaze lingered on those bruises for two seconds, without discerning their authenticity, he merely said indifferently: "I’ll handle the investment for the new drama. Next week, I’ll take you to meet the director."
The grievance in Serena’s eyes was instantly replaced by surprise, followed by an undeniable joy.
She suppressed the smile tugging at her lips and spoke modestly with lowered lashes, "Timothy, I just knew you wouldn’t abandon me."
Timothy didn’t respond, only instructed lightly, "Go back early."
Serena obediently agreed, and when she turned to leave, she passed by me, her lips curling into a smug arc.
I’m indifferent to how Timothy treats her.
As long as my daughter doesn’t end up in her hands, even if Timothy gives her the stars, it’s none of my concern.
After Serena left, I also prepared to go.
"Zoe."
As I was turning around, Timothy suddenly called out to me.
I stopped in my tracks but didn’t look back.
He stepped closer, his breath fell behind my neck, carrying a familiar chill: "Regarding your brother’s matter, I can withdraw the charges. Let’s let it go this time."
Listening to his "magnanimous" forgiveness, I slightly curled my lips, asking, "What are your conditions this time?"
I understand him too well!
All his gifts demand a price from me.
Sure enough, Timothy frowned slightly and said in a deep voice, "While I withdraw the charges on my side, I hope you could also withdraw your divorce petition. At least give me a chance to make it up to you."
My gaze turned cold, each word clear, "Timothy Xavier, I don’t need you to make up anything to me. I hope next time during the hearing, you won’t be absent. Keep your extra pity for the Sawyers."
After saying this, I opened the door and walked out decisively, never once looking back at him.
The next time Timothy and I meet should be in the divorce court.
...
But the next morning, my phone suddenly rang—it was an unfamiliar number.
After answering, a slightly helpless voice came through: "Miss Ellison, I’m Leo Grant, Attorney Sinclair’s assistant. Your mother is at Apex Law Firm, her emotions are quite unstable. Could you come by and take a look?"
My heart sank abruptly, and I quickly said, "I’ll be right there!"
As I arrived at Apex Law Firm, I indeed saw Mrs. Ellison shouting into the office for Julian Sinclair to "help"!
The formerly gentle and graceful Mrs. Ellison, for the sake of her son, was stubbornly like she had transformed into someone else.
A number of Apex Law Firm employees were gathered nearby watching the commotion.
Leo Grant was patiently explaining, "Ma’am, our Attorney Sinclair is really not here right now. Besides, his schedule is very full, appointments are necessary."
But Mrs. Ellison couldn’t listen to anything, she kept shaking her head, her eyes red: "I’m begging you, let me meet Attorney Sinclair, please? Only he can save my son!"
I hurriedly walked over, Leo Grant awkwardly looked at me, saying, "Miss Ellison, your mother... this situation..."
I was embarrassed and apologized repeatedly: "Sorry, I’ll take my mom back now."
Nevertheless, Mrs. Ellison refused to leave and cried, "Zoe, the lawyer told us your brother got into a conflict in there, beaten all black and blue! He’s been pampered since young; how could he endure this kind of hardship? Now, only Attorney Sinclair can save your brother! I’ve heard he’s the most famous lawyer in the country, he must have a way!"
At that moment, Julian Sinclair returned, a tall and dignified man accompanied by several people in suits, appearing to be business partners.
Seeing the scene of chaos, he frowned in displeasure and asked Leo Grant, "What’s going on?"
"Attorney Sinclair, this... is Miss Ellison’s mother..." Leo Grant cautiously said, "Seems to be about Miss Ellison’s brother’s matter."
Julian Sinclair then noticed me as well.
Seeing him, Mrs. Ellison disregarded the occasion and rushed over, desperately pleading, "Attorney Sinclair, please help us, find a way to save my son."
I hurried to pull her back, but she was not budging.
Julian Sinclair showed visible displeasure but restrained himself, saying to his business partners, "Excuse me."
Afterward, he spoke to me, "I have important matters to discuss now. Maybe you could wait in the lounge with your mother."
I seemed to see a hint of disdain in his eyes.
As if encountering a beggar on the street adamantly asking for money.
At that moment, my face flushed with embarrassment, self-esteem shattered.
I had no face to plead for his help any longer, awkwardly saying, "Sorry Attorney Sinclair, I’ll take my mom away now. You go ahead with your work."
Julian Sinclair nodded slightly and walked inside with long strides.
Mrs. Ellison was held back by Leo Grant and me, preventing her from rushing in.
It took a lot of effort to get Mrs. Ellison into my car.
I couldn’t bear to reproach her, only said helplessly, "Mom, I’ve already approached Attorney Sinclair about my brother’s matter previously."
Mrs. Ellison hurriedly asked, "What did he say?"
I sighed and said, "He said it’s a sure thing that my brother broke the law. Even if he’s a lawyer, he can’t go against the law." 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
Mrs. Ellison was stunned for a moment, and tears flowed more fiercely: "Even Attorney Sinclair has no way? Then doesn’t that mean your brother is beyond saving? Just thinking about him suffering inside and getting beaten, I could go to jail in his place! Maybe I should confess! I’ll say I did it all!"
"Mom!"
I finally lost patience and interrupted her: "Can you calm down? You weren’t so unreasonable before!"
Mrs. Ellison shouted, "How can I calm down? That’s my flesh and blood, the only flesh and blood! You may not care for him, you may disregard the Ellison Family’s kindness to you, we never expected you to repay anything! But I can’t just watch my son fall into the abyss!"
After she spoke, silence filled the car.
My chest felt tight and stifled; Mrs. Ellison realized what she said, flustered: "Zoe, mom... didn’t mean that. I... I’m just too anxious, I’m afraid your brother might face something terrible..."
"I know."
Despite feeling upset inside, what more could I say?
The Ellison Family has raised me for twenty years!
Just then, my phone rang, the screen showing "Julian Sinclair."
