Bought For A Baby, Kept For A Lifetime-Chapter 308: Something Feels Different
Immediately Elder Sterling was notified that Anne had been taken to Grayson hospital in the city, he sent their people to surround the hospital for Anne’s safety and he personally made a trip to the said hospital as well.
It was a very unexpected situation, Anne’s due date was still weeks away and the team of doctors hired to take care of her had already been preparing for the day she would give birth, but no one had anticipated she would suddenly have an early labor, not even the doctors.
"Drive faster Raymond, my grand daughter in law is about to give birth." Elder Sterling pressed the driver who immediately followed instructions.
"Grandpa, I’ll call Andrew." Gabriel said, and before elder Sterling could reply, Donald spoke up.
"No, let me be the one to call him. I doubt he would pick up your call if you did."
Donald knew Gabriel and Andrew were still on bad terms, so he volunteered to make the call instead.
Gabriel who had been about to place the phone by his ears halted and nodded quietly.
During the past couple of months after he had divorced Clara, Gabriel had been trying to get closer to his brothers and build a relationship with his family.
In the past, his jealousy and competitive nature towards Andrew had pulled them apart. Having been born to different mothers seemed like a good enough excuse for them not to get along, but Gabriel had found himself going down paths that he shouldn’t just to win against his own brother.
His interest in Anne had been something he could easily give up, but his ego had been unable to succumb to Andrew. He had been wrong.
He spent more time with his grandfather lately, he used to avoid the older man because of constant comparison to Andrew but he didn’t care anymore, the truth was that Andrew was a lot better than him in so many things, he never worked half as hard as Andrew, in their teens when he would sneak out to go partying Andrew was diligently learning the ropes of business from their grandfather, studying so fervently until he became the very best in his academics, and graduating as the top student internationally.
That had been the difference between himself and Andrew, and because his grandfather saw that difference, Gabriel had blamed Andrew for it when in truth he had himself to blame.
But when he began to get closer to their grandfather now, Gabriel realized where he had been wrong. Family, if the whole world stood against you, you’d always have family by your side, it was something he had failed to realize.
He had bridged the little distance with Donald as well and he realized that having a little brother was actually a big honor he had ignored in the past. The only person he hadn’t dared to approach yet was Andrew.
The car stopped at the hospital and they all rushed in, eager to welcome a new member into the Sterling family.
Several hours later, France.
A handsome and majestic looking man received an urgent call and he immediately abandoned the conference he was currently leading, leaving huge businessmen from across the world giving each other curious glances.
"Prepare the jet, we’re flying back home." He said to his men stationed around his car immediately he came out of the building.
"Yes master!"
Anne...his Annelise, he needed to be with her right now, needed to be there for her. He had promised her and himself that he would be there when she would give birth, he would stay by her side throughout every second of it, if he’d known she would have an early delivery he would have postponed the damned conference.
Was this why he had felt strange leaving Anne? She had been the one to insist he attend the work conference, assuring him repeatedly that she would be fine.
Andrew sighed and massaged his temples, but when he thought about Anne now, the strange feeling in his heart which started since he arrived at France seemed to begin to melt.
He had always heard of the phrase ’home is where the heart is’
His heart...was indeed at home.
His heart... Annelise.
Every moment, being away from her was pain, anticipation, longing.
When he finally found love every moment was beautiful. From the slow mornings they’d be sharing breakfast together, to every moment he’d watch her tenderly looking after the flowers she’d planted in their garden at the Black Thorn Manor.
To every single bit of her smile and how her eyes lit up when she saw him.
It was tender, it was love and it was the beginning of a perfectly beautiful life.
The anticipation swirled into him again.
"If you get to the airport in twenty minutes, I’ll double your salary for this month." Andrew instructed the driver.
The driver’s eyes lit up, a drive of about forty minutes shortened to twenty minutes, how fast would he have to go.
However at the thought of a double salary, the driver didn’t hesitate to step on the accelerator. "Yes master!"
Andrew recalled the day they got married, that very night when his stale heart seemed to have melted helplessly.
To him she was all that had made him smile, that made him laugh, to him...she was everything.
The car immediately arrived at the private airport at the stipulated time Andrew had given to the driver.
Without hesitation, Andrew stepped down from the car and went to the private jet already waiting.
He strapped himself in as the aircraft took off. He imagined her, restless and in pain, about to bring their child into this world. A stab of worry and fear suddenly pierced his heart.
"Reach Verizon in three hours and get triple salary this month." He instructed the pilot through the microphone.
Verizon was a six hour flight even on a private jet, cutting that time down by half was going to be incredibly difficult.
The pilot was startled at first and had to ask again to confirm If he’d heard right, and Andrew had indeed promised to triple his salary. The temptation of triple salary was too difficult to resist.
In three hours the jet had arrived at Verizon.
When Andrew exited the airport, he dismissed his men who were waiting for his arrival and entered the car.
"Welcome back master." The man who was his personal driver greeted.
"Sterling estate, double time and get five times your normal salary this month."
When Donald called, he had told him that Anne was still at the hospital, but immediately he landed just now, he received a text from Donald curtly telling him she was at home now. It could only mean that she’d given birth already.
How was she doing right now?
Had she been in too much pain? Was she still in pain now?
A wave of self hatred rushed into him at the fact that he hadn’t been by her side. He quickly swung the car door open by himself without even waiting for the driver to open the door for him.
The driver assumed Andrew was in such a hurry to get home because he’d heard the news, with a knowing smile on his face the driver quickly stepped on the accelerator.
Andrew stepped down from the car immediately it parked in the Sterling estate, an eagerness to his steps. The driver had stepped down to open the doors for him, but Andrew had already opened the door himself.
The sun had already begun to set in Verizon by the time he arrived.
He must be eager to see his wife and the newest addition to their family. The driver thought with a smile.
"Master." The driver suddenly called when Andrew was about to go up the steps to enter the estate.
Andrew paused then gave him a sideways glance.
"Congratulations." The driver said with a broad smile on his face.
Andrew merely gave a nod to the man, a knot of anticipation twisting low in his stomach.
The moment the grand doors of the estate opened, he heard a soft female voice.
"Andrew, you’re back!"
Andrew stiffened when a familiar voice reached his ears, his breath hitched as his eyes fell on the woman walking down the stairs towards him.
The familiar image of the woman he’d been eager to see fell into his sight.
His wife, his Annelise.
Her steps were light, somewhat tired and she was escorted by some of the maids.
But... something wasn’t right.
Andrew’s frown deepened as his gaze travelled down to her stomach that was now flat behind the night dress she was wearing.
She had indeed given birth.
The self reproach returned again, achingly biting in his heart.
He should have been there, he really should have been there with her.
Andrew’s eyes swung back up to her face. Her radiantly beautiful face, his heart knotted again, deep inside he felt happy that she was safe, she was safe and sound right in front of him.
He knew childbirth was one of the most painful things a woman could go through, he was immensely glad she was unharmed.
She was smiling at him, she looked extremely happy to see him, but... something just didn’t feel right, there was something...
Before Andrew could complete that train of thought in his mind, the woman rushed forward into his arms embracing him.
"I’ve missed you so much."
Andrew suddenly went stiff, his eyes slowly seemed to grow dark.
This woman in his arms...why did something feel different?
