Bought For A Baby, Kept For A Lifetime-Chapter 252: Who Is The Master?
"When I woke up I couldn’t remember anything at first, there were so many people here, some of them doctors and others just looked like they worked here. I only started getting all my memories back after a few hours and I asked the doctors about you, they said they would call and inform the master. Who is the master?"
Anne’s eyes darted in thought as she avoided Kristen’s gaze, her hands were wringing nervously as she tried to think about how to tell Kristen everything.
It was too soon to tell Kristen about all that, just as Anne thought about another topic to divert Kristen’s thought, he suddenly grabbed her hands making her look at him with panic wondering if he had seen through her thoughts.
"What’s making you so nervous? Is this master a scary person?" Kristen asked thinking the look of unease in her eyes was because he had mentioned this mysterious person he had been hearing all the people around talking about since he woke up and gained his awareness back.
Anne didn’t answer him immediately, looking like she was considering what she wanted to say and it scared him.
"Tell me Anne, what happened, why do you look so nervous?" He couldn’t help but feel worried at how suddenly pale Anne had gotten.
"It’s nothing Kris. This place is far from Verizon, but I’ll take you back with me when you’re strong enough to travel, right now you need to keep resting, I’ll go have a word with your doctor." As Anne finished saying this, she immediately moved to stand up but Kristen pressed both her shoulders down forcing her to remain seated.
"You’re trying to run away, it means something is definitely wrong. Have you forgotten that I already know all your tricks when you want to avoid something, you won’t be able to hide things from me."
Anne had forgotten that no one knew her better than Kristen, it was almost to a point that he seemed like he knew her thoughts even before she voiced them. It was true that she had never succeeded in hiding anything from him before so Anne opened her mouth to tell him,
"The master you just mentioned..." Anne hesitated for a long time as if second guessing what she was about to say and Kristen remained patient looking at her and waiting till she completed her words.
"...he is my husband." Her last words dropped like a bomb explosion in this moment.
Anne studied Kristen’s expression, he was frozen in shock, disbelief written all over his face. Anne felt her heartbeat grow faster. She was dreading how she would have to tell him the remaining story entirely.
"Husband? When did you get married?" The higher pitch of his voice made his shock even more evident.
"It happened recently, a few months ago." Anne replied softly.
"According to the dates the doctors told me, it has been about a year now. You met someone within a year and married him?" Kristen questioned with a little bit of accusation in his tone.
Within Kristen’s words, Anne seemed to suddenly get an idea.
That was right, she didn’t have to tell Kristen everything. He just came back into this world she had feared he might never come back, she didn’t want to burden his heart with pain and guilt, if he began to think that she had been forced to do so many things just to save him, he might just start wishing he had died immediately after the accident so she wouldn’t have to go through all the trouble. Just like Kristen knew her well, Anne knew her brother equally as well. He wouldn’t be able to forgive himself for it. It was best to save him the pain.
"It’s normal, people get married much sooner, I’ve heard of people who fell in love and got married in a month." Anne quickly said defensively, she had shed all the guilt and nervousness in her expression now. 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺
Kristen stared at her doubtfully, "So you’re telling me you got married because you fell in love?"
"Yes." Anne answered immediately.
Kristen didn’t say anything for a full minute, staring at her face with a sharp yet thoughtful looking gaze as if trying to find a lie in her eyes, Anne kept a neutral expression knowing any tiny slip up in her expression would make Kristen instantly see through her. So she had to put up a bit of performance before he would catch up with her lie.
"They were talking about this master as if he was a very scary person, and I know this is a different country because everyone speaks in Dutch, if I didn’t take a whole year of Dutch and German classes back then I wouldn’t have understood what anyone was saying."
So the language was Dutch, no wonder it sounded similar to German and she had almost mistook that they were speaking in a German tongue.
"What did they say about him?" Anne asked.
"That he’s a dangerous man and no one knows who I am or how I’m related to him, I also heard some whispers about how I might have been one of his victims who he almost killed but then decided to save so he hired an elusive doctor to cure me."
Anne almost let her expression slip because she felt confused about what Kristen just said about Andrew. Could it be that they were referring to someone else as the master?
Why would they think Andrew tried to kill Kristen?
Dangerous? Being completely honest Anne also felt there was some danger to Andrew, and she knew there was a lot she didn’t know about him yet, maybe he was dangerous but all of it didn’t matter right now.
"Maybe they were talking about someone else." Anne quickly said to dispell Kristen’s doubts.
"Then who did you marry? What’s his name, where is he from, how did you meet him, and how much do you know about him that you went ahead to marry him?" Kristen spewed all the questions in one breath, the doubt and wariness in his eyes hadn’t been dispelled yet.
Anne sighed, "I can’t answer everything at once, you’ll meet him for yourself. But just know that...right now I’m only here with you because of him."
Kristen sighed and ran his hand through his full fur of brown hair messing it up even further.
"It seems a lot of things happened while I wasn’t here." He looked deep in Anne’s eyes with a hint of sadness,
"Things must have been really hard on you." There was a soft familial sympathy in his eyes and Anne wanted to make things lighter, so she shook her head.
"It wasn’t hard at all, my husband has been there with me." Anne said somewhat braggingly just to make Kristen believe her, but internally things had indeed been difficult but if she thought about it, when she entered Andrew’s life afterwards, something had changed, her life had truly become lighter. She felt sad less often, less alone, and there was this sense of having someone even when they had no commitment.
"So this husband of yours..." Kristen said the word husband with a hint of bitterness as if it held a bad taste on his tongue before he added, "...you really love him?"
Anne didn’t hesitate because she knew he was trying to test her again, trying to find out things by staring deeply at any small expression she might make. "Of course I do."
"You, fall in love? Heh." Kristen scoffed as if the very idea was unbelievable.
"And what is that supposed to mean?" Anne exclaimed, he clearly didn’t believe her and truthfully, she hadn’t lied about this one had she?
"Nothing." He shook his head and wiped the smile of disbelief from his face, "And he loves you back as well?" He asked again.
Anne couldn’t help but hesitate but it was only for a second before she quickly replied, "He does...as he should."
"And you’re very sure he loves you." He said again as if to confirm.
Anne narrowed her eyes. Was he thinking she had been scammed into marriage by someone who didn’t love her?
Well, it wasn’t scammed exactly but...
"Would I marry someone who doesn’t love me?" Anne answered with a question instead.
"I dunno, you’re kinda crazy so you might." He answered as if it were a fact.
Anne gasped dramatically raising her hand as if to smack him but halted when he quickly said, "Alright, if you’re sure I won’t argue with you."
Anne lowered her hand internally breathing in relief. This cunning boy, it was hard to get anything past him.
It’s a good thing she could put up fake expressions to fool him otherwise he would analyze just from the looks in her eyes and find out about everything.
"But that doesn’t mean I believe you." Kristen suddenly added making Anne instantly look up.
"What?"
"I might have just returned from the dead, but I won’t let my sister make silly judgements that’ll determine her whole life. You got married and you’re sure he loves you right?" He asked again like a teacher speaking to their student trying to ensure their student’s well being.
Anne had missed how Kristen acted like her older brother, but now that he was back and in this moment, it was quite troublesome because she had almost forgotten how he always acted like a detective.
"I already told you I’m sure, do I have to say it a hundred times? Lie down and rest now, I’ll go speak to your doctor." Anne tried to escape again without making it obvious she was trying to run away but Kristen said something that made her freeze.
"I want to meet him, if you’re so sure he loves you like you said he does, I’d like to hear him say it himself."
