Chapter 229: His Girlfriend

That same day a huge news spread through the company.

There had been a newly appointed CEO in the company and there were rumors of a fierce exchange among board members and some family members of the Sterling’s before the final decision was made. 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮

Many wondered who and who among Sterling family members went against each other for this position. As everyone knew from the press conference, the person who would be taking over was Andrew Sterling and everyone thought he was more than a perfect fit for the job, however the rumors said there was a possibility Andrew wasn’t the one who had received the appointment. This sparked a heated debate many saying it was a competition between Andrew and his brother Gabriel, some even voted for Donald to be the dark horse in the whole situation but regardless of the debate, no one was certain who was the acting CEO of Sterling Enterprises.

The news reached Anne after she had come out of a strategic meeting with her team members were they discussed how to shoulder the entire project since team B wouldn’t be contributing at all.

"What? The new CEO might not be director Sterling? But chairman Sterling clearly said at the press conference that director Sterling will be appointed soon."

"Yeah, I assumed it would be director Sterling too but there was a board meeting yesterday and all the board members flew in to discuss, I heard there was an opposition among the board members and they voted director Sterling out, they insisted on voting in another Sterling family member but it hasn’t been revealed who it was."

"So director Sterling lost the opportunity to be CEO just like that?"

"I’m not sure, but one really knows for sure except the board members, all we got are bits and pieces of the information. But from what I heard, since the board started an opposition, there’s no way director Sterling can still be CEO, the board’s vote must have done something and the other Sterling must have been elected into the position."

"Wow, this is so unexpected! I still can’t believe it. I wonder who among the Sterlings is now acting CEO of SE."

Anne overheard this conversation and her eyes darted around thoughtfully.

Was that why Andrew hadn’t seemed settled yesterday? She could still remember the rigidly cold expression on his face when he received that call in his office yesterday, was it about the sudden change in the company?

Anne suddenly wondered where Andrew might be, she could remember overhearing him on the phone some days ago.

"... I’ve worked my whole life to get to the top, nothing will stop me from becoming CEO."

If he had worked really hard just to get the position, wouldn’t it be really disheartening to suddenly lose it?

Anne suddenly felt a well of sympathy swell in her chest.

"How disappointed would he feel to lose something he just got." Anne muttered under breath to herself, her brows tilted lower as a trace of sadness could be seen in her eyes.

Loving someone meant feeling pain at the thought of their disappointment, Anne suddenly found herself leaving the department to head up to the executive floor.

This floor was usually quiet and almost felt deserted most times whenever she came here, but this time it was packed with people going and coming frantically. Voices echoing over one another as people rushed to a fro around the hallway.

Anne spotted Andrew’s secretary at the far end, the poor girl was surrounded by several people subjected to multiple questions she tried to answer one after the other but the crowd was persistently pushing her. In the end she seemed to snap,

"I can’t say anything to anyone right now okay? Can you all just give me some space, I have a lot of work to do." Cynthia immediately pushed past the crowd of people and manged to walk away from them when she suddenly spotted Anne and stopped.

"Miss Thompson?" Cynthia looked backwards and noticed people seemed to be coming after her so she quickly whispered to Anne,

"Come with me."

Anne followed her as Cynthia quickly maneuvered the crowd before anyone could stop her again, she hid away inside the nearest vacant office she could find and immediately Anne followed Cynthia locked the door and took in a deep long breath.

"Ugh, this company is full of nasty gossips sometimes I just want to..." Cynthia shrieked to herself making a hand gestured as if she wanted to strangle someone but suddenly stopped herself as if just realizing Anne was there, she cleared her throat and composed herself.

Anne found her reaction comical and smiled to herself.

"Miss Thompson, are you looking for director Sterling too?" Cynthia asked.

"Yes, I was...there was something I wanted to get from him..." At first Anne answered naturally before realizing that to someone else she had nothing to do other than professional work with Andrew so it wouldn’t make sense if she were looking for him for no reason at all so she quickly added, "...I left a file in his..."

"No need to explain miss Thompson, even if I can’t tell others, I’ll still tell you. Director Sterling isn’t in the company right now, actually I don’t really know where he is either but I just wanted to tell you not to worry, director Sterling will be absolutely fine." Cynthia spoke quickly but there was something reassuring about her tone as if she were trying to put Anne at ease.

Anne wouldn’t deny that she felt quite reassured. She had rushed here to see Andrew, though she couldn’t picture him having any visible emotions she couldn’t help but feel he would be disheartened after losing something he’d been working towards for a long time.

But Anne’s relief quickly turned into confusion as she hastily raised her gaze to Cynthia who was still smiling brightly at her in a reassuring manner.

"Why did you decide to tell me this? I’m sure a lot of people are wondering about director Sterling right now."

"But you’re different aren’t you?" As Cynthia asked this, Anne felt her heart thump in panic.

What did she mean by that? Could it be Cynthia knew?

"Why do you think I’m different?" Anne dared to ask warily holding her breath.

"Because you’re director Sterling’s girlfriend, aren’t you?"
