[BL] The Mafia Boss Wants My Body-Chapter 44: Something Isn’t Right
Outside, Matteo was already on his feet.
Charles and Frank stood up immediately.
"Check inside," Matteo ordered his men.
"Yes, boss."
The bodyguards moved at once, spreading out across the villa.
Tony remained where he was, still seated. He didn’t react, didn’t move, as if Matteo’s order had nothing to do with him.
Matteo didn’t wait. He rushed inside himself, and he just moved through the dark with practiced ease until he reached Adrian’s side.
"I’m here," Matteo murmured, his hand finding Adrian’s arm.
"I can’t see you," Adrian murmured, his voice trembling as he reached out into the empty air.
"You don’t have to see me," Matteo’s voice came from right beside him. "Just follow my lead. I’ve got you."
A beam of light cut through the darkness as Matteo’s bodyguards stepped in behind him, switching on a flashlight.
The narrow glow was just enough for Adrian to make out Matteo’s silhouette in front of him.
"Let’s go back outside," Matteo said.
Adrian shook his head immediately. "No... I don’t want to go out there. I want to go to the room."
Matteo didn’t argue. "Okay."
He kept his hand on Adrian’s arm, guiding him back toward the house. Just as they reached the bedroom door, the lights hummed and buzzed back to life, filling the hallway with a sudden, bright glow.
Matteo signaled to one of his men nearby. "Check the breakers. Find out why the grid dropped."
The guard nodded and left at once. As soon as they were inside and the door closed, the silence only made it worse. Adrian began to tremble, the movement small at first but quickly taking over his whole body.
"Rian... hey," Matteo said, stepping closer. "Look at me. It was just the lights."
Adrian shook his head, his breathing uneven. "I don’t have a good feeling about this... something’s wrong. I can feel it. Maybe we should go back... maybe nobody is safe here."
Matteo reached out and took Adrian by the shoulders, grounding him. "Nothing is going to happen," he said. "You’re safe here. It was just the lights."
Adrian shook his head, his vision blurring. "You don’t know that... I just... I have this feeling."
"I understand why you’re scared," Matteo said. "But I’m right here. I’m not going anywhere, I’ll be with you wherever you go. You won’t be alone for a second. Just breathe for me."
Adrian didn’t say anything. He just lunged forward, burying his face in Matteo’s chest and hugging him with everything he had.
Matteo wrapped his arms around him, pulling him close. "Everyone is going to be fine, Adrian. Nothing is going to touch you. Just calm down... I’ve got you."
Slowly, Adrian’s breathing began to steady. He stayed close, holding onto Matteo as the tension eased, little by little, until he finally calmed down.
Matteo guided him to the bed. Adrian rested his head on his chest, listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat while Matteo’s hand moved gently through his hair.
"Do you want me to have the maid bring your dinner up here?" Matteo asked softly.
Adrian shook his head. "It’s okay. I’m not hungry."
Matteo nodded, his hand moving slowly over Adrian’s back. He didn’t stop, just kept holding him, his touch steady and quiet until Adrian finally fell asleep.
Once he was sure Adrian was asleep, Matteo tried to ease away to speak with his men about the power failure, but Adrian’s grip tightened even in his sleep, refusing to let go. Matteo exhaled softly and lay back down, he pulled Adrian close again, until he eventually fell asleep too.
The next morning, Adrian woke to the faint, sharp scent of cigarette smoke.
He opened his eyes to find the balcony doors pushed open. Matteo stood outside, framed against the bright blue of the ocean, a cigarette between his fingers.
He was on the phone, his voice low but tense, sounding more like an argument than a conversation. Adrian couldn’t make out the words, but he could hear the edge in it.
As soon as Matteo noticed Adrian was awake, he abruptly ended the call. He stepped back inside and leaned down to press a kiss to Adrian’s forehead.
"Good morning," Matteo said, his expression softening instantly.
"Good morning," Adrian replied, sitting up slowly. "Is everything okay? I heard you on the phone. You sounded... angry."
Matteo shook his head, dismissing the concern. "It’s nothing. Go ahead and freshen up so we can get some breakfast."
Adrian didn’t press him, though the tension in Matteo’s shoulders said enough. He got ready quickly, and they headed down to the dining area together.
The massive room was quiet. Aside from the bodyguards standing at their posts, the long table was empty.
"Where is everyone?" Adrian asked, looking around.
"They’re at the gym," Matteo said, pulling out a chair for him.
"Why are we eating here then? We should join them," Adrian suggested, but Matteo placed a firm hand on his shoulder, guiding him to sit.
"Sit down, Rian. You don’t need the gym."
"I think I do," Adrian countered with a small smile, but Matteo wasn’t joking.
"No," Matteo said shortly, then signaled for the maid to begin serving them.
Just as the food was placed on the table, Matteo’s phone vibrated again. He checked the screen, his expression hardened. "I have to take this," he muttered, stepping away from the table and heading toward the hallway.
Adrian was left alone with his thoughts until the sound of footsteps broke the silence. Tony walked in from the gym wing, his skin glistening with sweat. He went straight to the fridge, grabbed a bottle of cold water, then sat down across from Adrian.
For a moment, neither of them spoke. The only sound was the soft clink of Adrian’s fork against the plate, until Tony broke the silence.
"If you’re going to fall in love," he said without looking up from his water, "you should at least make sure you know exactly who you’re falling for."
Adrian paused, his fork hovering over his plate. He glanced around, then looked at Tony. "Are you talking to me?"
Tony didn’t look up. "There are only two of us at this table."
Adrian frowned. "What do you mean by that?"
Tony finally looked at him, his eyes cold and unreadable. "Sometimes the devil comes dressed as an angel, Adrian. Be wise."
"Tony, what are you talking about?" Adrian asked, his heart beginning to sink.
Before Tony could answer, the heavy sound of Matteo’s footsteps echoed in the corridor. Tony stood up instantly, capping his water bottle and disappearing through the side exit just as Matteo walked back into the room.
