Chapter 54: Ch 54: Demon King’s Castle

Nero’s declaration was followed by a tense silence, and Prince Kaiden’s hold around Shuu tightened to an uncomfortable level.

He did not seem to like this idea, and his actions showed it.

"Why does Shuu have to rely on anyone else when he has me? I am the one who got him into this situation, so I should take responsibility as well, right?"

Prince Kaiden asked with a serious face, but everyone gave him a look of hesitation.

Finally, Liam was the voice of reason around the carriage, and he risked his well-being to speak to the crown prince.

"I... don’t think that is a good idea. If you pay too much attention to Shuu, then Lady Sera’s position in high society and the court might become a little shaky. People might also try to use Shuu for their own benefit. It will not benefit anyone."

Prince Kaiden’s expression shifted slightly, which made Liam flinch. But he had to make sure his point came across clearly.

"I am sorry to say, but your position will only cause Shuu harm. It will be best if someone else takes charge of him... don’t you think so as well?"

Liam asked, and Prince Kaiden looked ready to separate his head from his body.

But as soon as Lady Sera had been mentioned, Prince Kaiden looked as if he had been doused by a spray of water, and he calmed down.

His eyes still looked angry, but they no longer looked like he wanted to murder Liam. Shuu did not know how to feel about all this. The atmosphere had turned annoying all of a sudden, and he felt like he no longer knew what he wanted to do.

A week passed in such tense confusion, where everyone tiptoed around each other. But the journey continued, and they finally reached the demon king’s castle.

It was a beautiful palace, but it looked burned. Marks of fire and... something else clawed across the walls, and even the garden looked barren.

"Ugh, how ominous. Who in their right mind would want to come here...? Do we even need a barrier around this place?"

Reina complained as she entered the demon king’s castle. She had heard a lot about this place since it came up in her studies, but seeing it with her own eyes was different.

It felt ominous.

"The barrier is for keeping people out as well as keeping the dangers inside. Who knows what else this place is breeding except dark energy."

Liam gave the textbook example of why the barrier was there as he followed.

Both Nero and Prince Kaiden were next, and Shuu... paused as he looked at the barrier.

Something about this place felt familiar. Something in him told him that he knew what this place was.

’Have I... been here before?’

He did not know why this place felt so familiar to him. It filled him with longing and fear at the same time, and he hesitated.

"Shuu, is something wrong? You don’t have to be afraid. Just follow me and enter."

Prince Kaiden extended his hand toward Shuu, and he reached out to take it. He was quickly pulled toward the open gardens, and he shivered at the feeling he was getting from this place.

Still, he followed Prince Kaiden inside, and they headed toward the first chamber.

"According to historic records, the demon king’s seal is in the last chamber. Once we reach there, only Prince Kaiden will be allowed to enter and complete the reseal... hey, does anyone else get a feeling like we are being watched?"

Liam asked, pausing all of a sudden to look around. He looked uncomfortable, but he was not the only one.

"Now that you mention it... I do also get the same feeling. Let me take a quick check-"

"I don’t think we will need that check."

Liam reminded Reina as a shadow jumped toward them. It collided with Nero’s sword and was immediately pushed back.

"Shadows? Why are they here? No one told me that we would have to face these things...?"

Liam complained as he took out a talisman to fight against the shadows as well. Reina immediately formed a barrier around them all, and Nero fought against these shadows.

"The seal must have started to become loose. I will head in first and take care of the shield. Shuu, come with me."

Prince Kaiden grabbed Shuu’s arm and dragged him behind. Shuu’s head spun due to all that was happening, and his feet followed the crown prince.

"Prince Kaiden-! That is not-!"

Liam tried to warn him, but it was already too late. Shuu and the hero had disappeared in the second chamber.

"Tsk, what a nightmare. The customs... Everything is going wrong here."

Liam complained, only for Reina to yell at him.

"Focus on our enemy first and then complain. You need to stay alive first to bitch later."

"Huh-! When did I bitch-! Oh shit-!"

While Liam and Reina were trying their best to stay alive, Nero followed the crown prince and Shuu inside and made sure they were not being followed.

He kept an eye on them for as long as he could, but he also had to pay attention to the fight in front of him.

Due to his contract, a lot of his power had been sealed away, and he could no longer show the same terrifying presence he once could.

Still, he stood his ground.

"I know what you all want. But unfortunately, he does not want to return to us. Nor does he recall any of this. He is also about to have a hard time in the future, so won’t you all back down?"

He asked the shadows, but they seemed not to care about his order.

They attacked him mindlessly, and with a heavy heart, Nero disposed of them as well as he could.

As long as the demon king’s essence lived, these shadows would survive and come back. But the humans could have momentary peace in the meantime.

"Tsk, selfish species... selfish until the very end. They will sacrifice anything and everything they can get their hands on... even their precious goddess is not out of bounds for them."

Nero complained before he looked at the last chamber.

Finally, this journey was about to end, but the hardship was just starting. Especially for Shuu, whose whole world was about to change.
