Chapter 31: Ch 31: An Emergency

"Finally, your fever has broken. We are both safe now."

The healer sighed in relief as he looked down at Shuu’s pale complexion. Color was slowly starting to appear back on his face, and his body was starting to accept the barest amount of healing.

Due to not being blessed by the goddess, Shuu’s body was not able to handle healing well. And it could especially not handle any divine blessing.

So he had to be treated with medicine and backward techniques, and luckily, they had worked well.

Sigh

"I will leave now because I need to sleep. Please, I am begging you-do not leave this room and your bed. Please wait for me to come back and give you a signal before you do anything."

The healer sounded desperate, and Shuu felt bad for him. So he nodded, and the healer finally left.

The room was warm, but Shuu felt cold inside. He felt alone, and sleep refused to come to him. So he looked at the ceiling, waiting to do anything to pass the time.

Finally, after a few hours of being alone, he got his first and only batch of visitors.

"Shuu, how are you feeling now? Do you feel better? Tell me if you need anything."

Prince Kaiden sounded the same as ever, which made Shuu certain that he had forgotten all the fighting they had just before Shuu fell ill.

Shuu just nodded, not trying to argue back with him.

"Shuu, what should I get you? Are you comfortable? Here, let me hold your hand... no, maybe I should hold you. I can make my body run hot and-"

"Prince Kaiden, you might be making Shuu uncomfortable-"

"-and we can share the meal. Bland food must be getting to you-"

"Ugh, I cannot take it anymore. Your Highness, you are making Shuu uncomfortable. He needs to rest, and he cannot do that with you constantly breathing down his neck like this."

Reina finally snapped and raised her voice.

A deafening silence filled the room as Shuu let out a relief-filled sigh.

Prince Kaiden looked shocked, but Reina had already backed out of the room before he could lash out at her.

"I will... go out as well now. Good luck, Shuu. Get better, because we need to leave soon. We have no idea when the world will start to fall, so we cannot wait around for much longer."

Liam left as well after saying those words. His words felt burdensome, but Shuu’s head was spinning too much to let them register.

"Tsk, these two have no compassion. Anyway, are you feeling alright, Shuu? Here, let me help you up. I brought you some food."

Shuu’s whole body protested against moving. But when the crown prince helped him up, he had no choice but to follow.

The food brought to him was good, but he could not taste much of it because of the medicinal taste in his mouth. Still, he managed to finish most of it before he felt full.

"I am glad to see that you are doing well. I know this journey has been stressing you out, and I apologize for it. And I also promise that I will give you anything you ask once this journey is over. So until then, keep hanging in there."

Prince Kaiden promised, but Shuu knew that what he really wanted could never be given to him.

Despite being a hero, Prince Kaiden was still just a human. He would not be able to dispel the curse Shuu was born with or be able to give him the goddess’s blessing.

Nor would he be able to help Shuu find what he was looking for, because the answer was in Shuu’s own memories, and he did not want to share.

As for the last thing...

’Let’s not go there. I still have time not to fall in love. I just... need to make sure I do not fall in love with Prince Kaiden...’

But that was easier said than done. Especially when the crown prince was being so open and affectionate with him.

In his mind, Shuu knew what he needed to do. But his heart did not agree.

"It’s going to be alright. Just relax and don’t think much. Everything is going to be alright."

Shuu let out a sigh as he closed his eyes and fell asleep under Prince Kaiden’s touch. He had no idea how long he slept for, but when he woke up, his fever had gone down, and he did not feel like he was dying. 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂

He was able to stand as well, and Prince Kaiden’s body slumbered against his own.

Shuu quietly took the crown prince’s arms away from his middle, but Prince Kaiden quickly reached around his waist to grab tightly at him.

"Uhmmm, where are you going? This is far too early. Come back to bed with me..."

Prince Kaiden pulled Shuu back into the bed, and Shuu did not struggle against him much either. He allowed the prince to cradle his body a little more before he settled down.

Now that Shuu knew all this affection had an expiry date, he wanted to bask in it.

He almost went back to sleep when the door to his room was slammed open too loudly. The loud noise made Shuu cover his ears and want to bury his face in Prince Kaiden’s chest.

But the panicked voice made sure he had no chance to do that.

"P-Prince Kaiden, there is an emergency... W-We got news that... there has been a demon attack on a village not too far from here. Please head there for help as soon as you can."

A young man ran into the room as quickly as he could and did not even notice the condition of the people inside before he spoke about the news he had brought.

Both Shuu and Prince Kaiden looked startled and turned toward the door where the messenger was standing. But the messenger only looked scared and gave the crown prince a begging stare.

Prince Kaiden finally pulled himself out from under the blankets and stood up.

"Alright, I am coming. Shuu, you should remain here and rest."

Shuu felt like he should go with Prince Kaiden as well. But one look from the crown prince was enough to make him change his mind.
