Dinner was a solemn affair where not a lot was said. The only one truly speaking at the table was Lady Canarie, and that was to ask the kids about their opinions regarding what they were eating.

Lady Canarie was visibly trying to get close to Caelis and Rin, but it was of no use. Rin did not say anything, and Caelis ignored her attempts.

Despite this open hostility and rejection, Lady Canarie did not give up and continued to press her luck.

Finally, her maid could not take it anymore and, as per her orders, decided to lead the conversation in another direction.

"Lady Canarie, it seems like the kids are rather lonely without Companion Shuu and Emperor Kaiden. So how about you keep them company?"

The maid asked, and Lady Canarie brightened up at her suggestion.

"You are right! I can keep the kids company...but they don’t like being with me, right?"

She asked, and the maid already had an answer prepared for her.

"That is only because the kids are unfamiliar with you. Once they get to know you and accept you, it will be fine. But just to make sure, why don’t you take Prince Yunn along? The kids would feel much safer with their uncle..."

The maid proposed, and everyone seemed taken aback by her words.

Liam looked the most uncomfortable, and he even voiced his opinion before anyone could get any strange ideas.

"I am far too busy for such things. Perhaps Danielle can take the kids and Lady Canarie—"

Usually, a maid did not have enough courage to interrupt royalty, but Lady Danielle’s maid decided to be different.

She knew that she would die if she did not follow through on her orders. But Prince Yunn was soft-hearted, and he might allow her to live. So she decided to take the chance and speak up.

"My lord, why not let Princess Danielle finish the work in your stead? She will be much faster and more efficient. And I do think the kids will be much safer and more comfortable to have you around as well. You should take this time to spend some time with your family."

The maid interrupted, and silence filled the hallway.

Prince Yunn might pretend to be naïve, but he was not actually naïve. He understood the hidden meaning behind the words spoken to him.

But even before he could say anything, Lady Canarie let out a startled laugh.

"I am not sure it is such a good idea for me to be alone with anyone who is not Emperor Kaiden. As you know, I am chosen by the goddess to be his companion, and he’s the only one for me as well."

Lady Canarie had no skill in reading the room because if she had, she would not have said these words after the maid tried so hard to set her up with Prince Yunn.

Her words caused Prince Caelis to scoff in amusement, but when Canarie looked at him, he had already turned his face away.

That did not deter her, and she vowed to continue doing her best.

However, the maid suddenly looked scared and decided to turn toward Lady Canarie once more.

"Don’t close your options like that, Lady Canarie. There are more amazing people in this world apart from Emperor Kaiden. You just need to open your eyes and look around—"

"But I don’t want anyone else. You might not understand it because you are not the chosen one, but for me, Emperor Kaiden is all I have and will have in the future. He is all I can think of..."

The more Canarie spoke, the uglier the maid’s expression became. But in the end, the maid controlled herself and nodded.

Danielle knew that this would not be the end of it all. So she decided to keep an eye on the maid the entire time.

Unfortunately, she underestimated just how much effort her father had put into this whole thing, and while she was working, a new rumor started to circulate around the imperial castle.

Kaiden looked down at Shuu’s sleeping face and reached out to touch it softly.

Shuu’s eyes moved, but he did not wake up. It made Kaiden reach out to grab a strand of his hair and play with it.

But once again, nothing happened.

"Looks like my honey is all worn out after we had some fun. Well, this just makes it easier for me to take you back now."

Kaiden picked up Shuu and started to head back. He was using his powers to keep an eye on things. But so far, nothing serious had come up for him to deal with.

The journey back was simple and without any hassle. He took a route where he and Shuu would not be seen or called out by anyone. And before he knew it, he was back in the imperial city.

But the atmosphere seemed tense.

Kaiden still had a hood over his face and carried Shuu in his arms. He entered a tavern, and the innkeeper gave him a suspicious look before noticing the burden in his arms.

The innkeeper’s eyes widened, and he suddenly gave Kaiden another wary glance.

Kaiden met that gaze without hesitation, and the innkeeper was suddenly forced to look away. Kaiden’s intense stare made the shopkeeper’s heart thunder in fear.

’W-What is happening to me? Am I feeling intimidated? Me...? I face so many nobles and other factions every day and don’t even flinch. Just what is making me so nervous?’

The shopkeeper wanted to speak up, but his nerves got the better of him, and his voice got stuck in his throat.

Before he could say anything, Kaiden spoke and threw a coin toward the shopkeeper.

"I would like to rent a room for tonight. You are free to keep the change."

The shopkeeper looked stunned at the generous payment and decided not to ask any more questions.

After all, people who spent money like this were rare and not worth losing.
