Chapter 279: 279: In the woods

Two days had effortlessly gone by, and the news had spread across the kingdom. Everyone was aware of the King’s death; the reason given was his illness.

That was exactly what Queen Elizabeth wanted and had planned for, so she made sure it was the news that reached everyone. And they all believed it.

The abrupt news caused waves throughout the kingdom and in the neighbouring kingdoms as well. All were talking about it.

In the same manner, Queen Elizabeth had already gotten everything ready for her coronation as the new ruler of the kingdom.

Within a matter of three days, she held a grand coronation banquet. She sent out invitations and arranged the hall. Everything needed was set. And in three days, it was held.

Queen Elizabeth stood before the nobles who had honoured the invitation. And so she was crowned before all as the new ruler of Valencrest. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

Most definitely weren’t in approval of it, especially since most of them, if not all, were men. But there was nothing they could do, and so they rode with it.

And so Queen Elizabeth stood before the audience and was officially declared the new ruler of the kingdom.

The atmosphere in the woods felt damp. The trees were a deep green, and a soft breeze brushed through, ruffling them to the side.

A cave sat at a corner of the woods, its entrance meticulously covered by some huge tree leaves and branches. A rock sat right in front of its entrance, and Eden sat on that rock, hugging both legs while he stared into the sky.

"Do you think it’s going to rain again tonight?" Eden casually asked while studying the weather.

"I think it will," Lenny said. He sat on a smaller rock at the side, still in his cat form. "It’s been raining for two days now."

Eden blinked, his eyes still surveying the sky. He wrapped his arms around himself, hugging himself while letting out a soft sigh. "I suppose."

They were quiet for a while.

"It must feel good, achieving what she did after years of careful planning. I actually wish I was in the palace to watch Queen Elizabeth do what she did. Must be iconic," Eden said casually.

"By now she must have already been crowned. I flew through the city as a bird and heard everyone talking about it."

"Lucky her, I guess," Eden said. "Things went her way. She ended the man that ruined everything for her, and now she took his place. Iconic indeed."

He added, "Maybe it’d be safer to go back and stay at the palace now since the king’s gone."

"Are you going to head back?" Lenny asked.

Eden hesitated and shrugged, staring through the woods. "I don’t know." He buried his chin on his knees.

"Speaking of that, the priest is probably still alive and looking for a way to get you by now. Planning new ways," Lenny reminded him.

Eden stretched out his palms and stared at them for a while. "I guess I’ll have to avoid him for now. For the meantime. But since I have some power still running through me from Felix, I guess I’ll survive."

He added, "Besides, we were able to survive these three days in the woods because of the powers. So yeah," he shrugged.

"You know what?" Eden asked. "I’m really curious as to what happened years back. How everyone is involved with the Wizard of El."

He hesitated and then said, "I mean, the priest claimed he made him and all. How? The Emperor wants him dead. Why? And Felix seems somehow connected to me. How? I’m just suddenly curious after that banquet."

Lenny sighed. "And I think I have a feeling you’ll get those answers soon. I just do."

"Do you think so?" Eden stared into the sky. "Maybe I should start looking for them myself. The answers. Because the answers might actually hold some clues to why I’m here and how to get back home." He pouted.

They were quiet for a while as they thought about what Eden said. It made some sense to them.

Eden stared at Lenny. "Aren’t you a guide or something? Why do I feel like I even know more than you?"

Lenny sighed. "I guess my oversight is pretty much limited. I can only know a few things ahead and some in hindsight. Maybe I was sent here as a companion more than a guide after all."

Eden smiled as he patted Lenny on the head. "Doesn’t matter. I’m glad to have a companion I can relate with. It’s still better."

He smiled while staring into the sky. It was as though it was changing. Eden casually said, "I just hope I can quickly get answers. I have a lot of them at this point..."

"I think it’s going to rain," Lenny said. They were quiet for a while.

"Probably."

Soon, they heard a sound coming from inside the cave—the sound of something falling.

The two turned and stared into the cave.

"I think he’s awake," Lenny said.

Eden said nothing. He got up, and the two of them made their way into the cave to see what it was.

They met with Elvis, who was now sitting up on the mattress.

Elvis looked sleepy and tired. He had just woken up and was curious to know where he was and how he got there.

He was in a cave, so of course he’d be curious to know what the hell was happening.

He looked around curiously and confused, and then his eyes met Eden and Lenny, who had just walked in.

The cave was warm, filled with stick-fire lights Eden had magically inserted in most corners of the space.

It was still a primitive setting, but Eden had managed to make it warm and cozy with some additions. He had summoned some things within his strength using magic and had even made a mattress with the magic he could manage.

It wasn’t the best, but it was at least decent enough to stay in.
