Billionaire's Long Journey of Chasing His Love-Chapter 584 - 504: Giving You Another Chance (Third Update)
Yu started to rage, paying no mind to anything else, and kicked the bathroom door with a loud bang.
To her credit, Yu’s kick was effective. Not only did it vent her anger, but it also saved her sister.
Just as the Duke opened the door, Yi Luowa darted out from inside.
"Sister, I miss the kids. Come with me to see them," Yu pouted, tugging Yi Luowa upstairs.
Tong Airui chuckled, returning to the bathroom to wash his hands before stepping out.
Mutta and Royce sat for a while longer before excusing themselves back to the Royal Palace. After seeing them off, Long Che told his son, "Go with Queen Haotian to the study. She has something to tell you."
Tong Airui hesitated for a moment but slowly stood up.
Queen Haotian smiled and said, "Duke Airui just returned. Perhaps he should rest a bit first."
"Some matters cannot wait," Long Che glanced at his son.
Tong Airui slightly arched the corner of his mouth and made a polite gesture, "Please, Queen Haotian."
The Queen smiled faintly and stepped into the study first.
As the door to the study closed, Nancy furrowed her brow, looking at Danton, "What does Mom want to tell Duke Airui?"
"This is none of a child’s concern. Let’s go upstairs to play with Sister Luowa," Danton replied, greeting Long Che before dragging Nancy upstairs.
Inside the study, Tong Airui and Queen Haotian sat facing each other.
The Duke’s thoughts seemed elsewhere, his gaze hollow.
Queen Haotian offered an apologetic smile, "Duke Airui, I pulled you here right after your return without even letting you see your children. My sincerest apologies."
Seeing his wife’s face alone satisfied him! That was the Duke’s inner thought, but even in his most foolish moments, he wouldn’t dare utter such a sentiment before the Queen.
"It’s fine, let’s talk. When we’re done, I’ll go see them," Tong Airui pulled his thoughts back together and looked at Queen Haotian seriously.
Tears welled up faintly in the Queen’s eyes. Adjusting herself slightly, she said solemnly, "I want you to investigate Kai Di for me..."
As the Queen finished her words, Tong Airui frowned lightly, "I’ve looked into Kai Di before, but only events from the past few years. Based on what you said earlier, Danton’s poisoning goes back fourteen years, which makes digging into it much harder."
Queen Haotian’s hands trembled slightly, "I can provide older leads, though they’re incomplete. If you connect them, though, you’ll get results."
Tong Airui arched the corner of his mouth slightly, "Queen Haotian, you’re essentially borrowing my hands. Fine, give me all the information about Kai Di you have, I’ll sort through it as quickly as I can. Afterward, I’ll forward the findings to Emperor Haotian. If you want my advice, I’d confront Emperor Haotian directly with your suspicions about Kai Di, then let him handle it."
The Queen let out a bitter chuckle, "If the tables were turned, would you have the heart to kill Duchess Ai Ni?"
Without hesitation, Tong Airui shook his head, "I couldn’t."
"And what would you do then?" Queen Haotian pressed her lips together. "You’d nag endlessly like Randy, pleading with your wife to spare your sister’s life." 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎
"But I’d ensure the wrongdoer faced consequences."
Queen Haotian shook her head, "Randy punished Kai Di too. For an ambitious person, losing freedom and power is the ultimate punishment, at least in Randy and Kai Di’s minds. But who can comprehend the hatred in my heart? What I want is Kai Di’s life!
On a small scale, my two children were ruined by her hands. On a broader scale, the entire Haotian almost fell because of her. If I hadn’t forced Randy to seek your help, Haotian today wouldn’t belong to Randy or Du Ma—it would have fallen to her, Kai Di.
I, a woman accused of bringing calamity to my country, live every day amidst calculations and schemes. On one hand, it’s for my home, my nation; on the other, it’s for that simmering grudge. She doesn’t let me live in peace, and I won’t let her have her way. If Haotian falls into her hands, the consequences will be disastrous."
Tong Airui raised an eyebrow slightly—her final words had struck a chord with him. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have assigned people to monitor Kai Di.
"Duke Airui, though Kai Di is imprisoned, I’ve long had the feeling she hasn’t severed ties with the outside world. Especially now—with someone trying to kill me and my two children—my suspicions are stronger than ever.
I don’t care if you laugh at me. You’ve probably heard rumors about me and Du Ma. But trust me, our relationship wasn’t as sordid as the rumors claim. Nonetheless, I dare say that no matter how much Du Ma hates me, he wouldn’t harm me.
So, when Prime Minister Long Che suggested it might be Du Ma’s old subordinates who wanted us dead, I didn’t believe him at all. It must have been Kai Di. If my children and I perish, she and her children are the ones who stand to gain the most."
Tong Airui nodded in agreement.
Queen Haotian narrowed her eyes slightly, "There’s one thing I’ve never told anyone—not even Randy. Now that I reflect on it, I feel deeply ashamed..."
Tong Airui watched the Queen silently, patiently awaiting her next words.
"Haotian possesses chemical weapons."
Tong Airui’s brow furrowed deeply. Haotian possessing such weaponry—what a serious matter!
The Queen looked toward Tong Airui apologetically, "Don’t worry, I’ve hidden them away in the mountains. When Kai Di secretly began researching these weapons, I discovered it and had all those involved in their creation secretly executed. But I kept the weapons themselves.
Back then, my reasoning was simple. If Kai Di ever seized the throne, I’d use these weapons to bring her down. But now I realize how harmful they are. My son was a victim of their failed experiment.
Duke Airui, rest assured, the first thing I’ll do upon returning is destroy these weapons. The reason I’ve shared all of this with you is to show you I’m not accusing Kai Di without reason—she has the means. The poison that afflicted Danton was a byproduct of her failed experiments."
Tong Airui clenched his hand tightly, "Never in my life have I encountered such a malicious woman. Danton is her blood nephew! How could she do such a thing?"
"A woman consumed with ambition, when faced with a choice between power and family, will choose power without hesitation. In this regard, she is nothing like Randy. Randy is too loyal and sentimental."
Tong Airui slightly curved the corner of his mouth, "But isn’t it his loyalty and sentiment that endeared him to you? If Emperor Haotian were like Du Ma or Kai Di, you wouldn’t endure all these troubles for him."
Queen Haotian gazed at Tong Airui and smiled, "To think, you’re the one who truly understands me."
Tong Airui smiled faintly, "Precisely because I understand you, I’m determined to help. I’ll make the investigation results public, so even if Emperor Haotian wants to spare Kai Di, he won’t be able to."
"Thank you!" Queen Haotian took out her phone and looked toward Tong Airui, "Shall I send you the files now?"
"Please do." Tong Airui accepted the transmission, opened the folder, and began examining it word by word with utmost care.
"Kai Di even studied at Saint Cyr Military Academy?"
"For a year of preparatory studies. That was the year I gave birth to Nancy. After forcing my servant to swap my baby, she ensured Randy and I truly parted ways, then returned to the country."
Tong Airui frowned, "Your child was also born in France?"
The Queen hesitated, "Yes. Why? Was another child also born there?"
"Lu—"
"Mom, it’s Dad’s call—he says it’s something urgent." Danton’s anxious voice interrupted from outside the door.
Queen Haotian glanced at her phone and realized she’d accidentally enabled airplane mode. She hurriedly walked toward the door.
Danton’s expression was grim. "Mom, what’s wrong with your phone? Why weren’t you answering Dad’s calls!"
He shoved his phone into her hands. "Dad said it’s really urgent."
Queen Haotian frowned slightly as she pressed the phone to her ear.
"Zhi Lan, Kai Di has escaped from prison! You and the children must stay vigilant!"
The Queen narrowed her eyes, "How could she escape from a place like that?"
"The entire underground of the palace has been tunneled out by her people."
"Ha," the Queen scoffed coldly, "If the underground has been hollowed out, why hasn’t she simply come for my life too? Did she take Yosef with her?"
"Yes. I only realized Yosef was missing and went to the prison to check on Kai Di. That’s when I found... she was gone."
"Randy, don’t panic. The children and I are very safe here with Prime Minister Long Che. Listen carefully—send people to follow the tunnels. You’re bound to find some traces."
"I’ve already sent people after her. I’m just worried about you and the children."
The Queen furrowed her brow, "Now you’re worried? If given a second chance, would you still spare her life?"
