Chapter 71: Chapter 71 - Livia

After the lecture ended, Logan stood up with mixed feelings.

He wasn’t the only one who felt that way. Most of the other students in his class looked around weirdly, searching for their group members.

"Look, it could’ve been worse," Grant said, patting Logan’s back.

"How so?" Logan asked, staring at him.

"Uhm," Grant stuttered, scratching his cheek. "Well, if Derek and his friend were in your group, it could’ve been worse."

"I guess that’s a fair point," Logan nodded, heading out of the classroom with the others following closely behind.

"Think about it," Robert joined in. "At least Livia is somewhat neutral, and you’ve spoken to her before, which I doubt Derek has."

Logan gave a nod, lost in thought.

"Well, anyway," Grant said loudly. "I’m going to search for my two teammates and start planning ahead."

Thomas, Layla, and Robert nodded, each planning to do the same.

"Good luck," Logan told them, smiling softly. "I’ll try to do the same in a little."

Because Logan’s group left early, the halls were still filling with students leaving their classes.

After a while, Logan finally saw Derek and his group leave the classroom.

Logan sighed when he saw Derek’s ever-present mocking expression.

"Derek," Logan called out, walking up to him and his group.

"Fuck off, orphan," Derek said, raising his middle finger as he continued walking past Logan, laughing with his group.

Logan let out another sigh and stepped back to wait for Livia.

’That went about as well as I’d expected,’ he thought, shaking his head slightly. ’Seems like I’ll have to watch my back carefully inside the dungeon.’

After waiting a while longer, no more students walked through the doors.

That’s when the church girl walked through the door, dressed in her usual white robes and a veil.

She stopped as she stepped out of the classroom, glancing at Logan in the nearly empty hallway.

"Good morning," Logan said, walking up to her with a smile.

"Good morning, Logan," she responded calmly, but Logan could see the edges of her lips curve up slightly beneath the veil.

"You are Livia, right?" he asked.

She tilted her head, amused. "You’ve seen me every day for weeks and you’re only asking now?"

Sighing internally, Logan gave a small nod. "Is that a yes?"

"I don’t know, do you want it to be?" she asked, teasing him.

"Actually, I would prefer if you weren’t," Logan said, still hoping for the miracle where she’d say it wasn’t her.

Livia let out a soft chuckle, clearly entertained.

"Harsh," she said, placing a hand over her chest as she pretended to be offended. "And here I was thinking we’d become best friends by the end of this dungeon."

Logan didn’t answer right away. He just stared at her for a few seconds, then muttered, "God help me."

Livia smiled under her veil. "You’re in luck," she said. "I offer spiritual guidance. You might actually be able to meet the divine one there."

He glanced at her expressionlessly. "You’re really enjoying this, aren’t you?"

She didn’t deny it, a large smile still plastered on her face. "I find amusement where I can."

"Glad I could contribute to your entertainment," Logan muttered, shaking his head.

Logan felt a headache starting to form. Between Livia’s teasing and Derek’s threats, he felt like the dungeon wasn’t just going to be unbearable but even dangerous.

Logan tried to ignore the smug smile under her veil as he steered the conversation back on track.

"Anyway," he said, rubbing his temples, "I assume you saw the team assignment."

"Yes, I have," she answered calmly.

Her teasing stopped, and her tone became serious.

"I’m not exactly thrilled with our third group member," she added after a pause. "But I suppose there’s no point in complaining."

Logan raised an eyebrow, surprised by her directness.

"Didn’t expect you to say that out loud," he said.

"Why not?" she replied, voice even. "I have standards. And even the university doesn’t always meet them."

"Agreed," Logan nodded, relieved that Livia was taking the dungeon seriously.

A brief silence followed before he spoke again.

"So," he said, glancing at her. "Do you want to go over anything before we head in?"

"Not now," Livia said calmly. "We’ll talk tomorrow."

"And don’t worry," she added, turning slightly. "I’ll keep things simple enough that even you can understand."

With that said, Livia smirked, turning away before Logan could even respond.

Logan glanced at her back and shook his head.

"No doubt about it," Logan mumbled as he turned around. "This dungeon is going to make me lose my sanity."

’At least she’s on the same page as me about Derek,’ he thought, making his way over to his room.

Once in his room, Logan immediately began researching the dungeon species in more detail.

’If I want to make the best of this, I’ll have to know what to expect,’ he thought.

For Logan, more was on the line than just the prizes.

’If I can’t get a decent score, the SSS-rank will most likely delay teaching me even more,’ he thought, shaking his head. ’He might not even teach me at all.’

He didn’t doubt that the SSS-rank had taught a few others over the years—this was the best university in the world, after all.

’There’s probably a couple of SSS-ranks in my year alone, let alone all the upperclassmen years.’

An hour passed as Logan found past experiences and basic information on the creatures inside the dungeon.

’These creatures are rather intelligent for their ranks,’ he thought, glancing through the experiences from upperclassmen.

Turning off his hologram projector, Logan leaned back.

"Even with a bodysuit, one big mistake could still be a death sentence," Logan muttered.

’I have to make some plans regarding Derek,’ he thought, staring up at the ceiling. ’Even if the chances are slim, I need to make sure I’m prepared to get backstabbed.’

He didn’t think Derek would actually dare to do something obvious—after all, activating his mana would instantly trigger the recording bots. Still, Logan knew better than to let his guard down.

Looking at the system interface above him, Logan noticed the timer had reached zero.

’I could redeem something right now,’ he thought, before quickly shaking his head. ’No, I have to save until my breakthrough.’

Glancing back at the ceiling, Logan let out a quiet breath and shook his head again.

’This dungeon will be a real test,’ he thought. ’I need to prepare for monsters, traps... even my own supposed allies.’
