Chapter 116: Chapter 116 - Aftermath

Hearing a shrill screech coming from his left, Logan’s eyes fell on the fight between the platinum cores and the A-rank crab up ahead.

He looked in shock at the large tidal wave appearing behind the A-rank crab as it hit the platinum cores and swallowed the surrounding military groups.

All of the platinum cores had managed to jump up, with one of them quickly freezing water to create solid platforms.

Logan’s eyes widened as one of the platinum cores summoned a massive lightning sword that lit up the sky.

’Amazing,’ he thought, eyes not leaving the fight.

The man dashed forward, lightning crackling around his feet, almost gliding across the water before slashing down with his sword.

The crab summoned a large earth shield to protect itself, earth shards flying everywhere as the lightning sword crashed into it.

’The strength from platinum cores is on a completely different level,’ Logan thought, observing quietly.

One of the other platinum cores dashed forward, creating earth steps in the air to jump over the shield the crab had made.

As he hung in the air, a massive bright light appeared in his palms that spread through the air.

Then, a massive golden beam burst down towards the crab.

Logan had to close his eyes, almost getting blinded from the light.

There was no explosion—just silence, as the surrounding water slowly flowed back into the sea.

The earth shook as its large body collapsed onto the ground.

Logan kept his eyes on the fallen creature as distant sounds of fighting and mana turrets echoed from other parts of the battlefield.

Many groups were still fighting, but it seemed like something had changed.

He shifted his gaze towards the horizon, squinting his eyes.

Hundreds of creatures still filled the distant shore—yet many were already turning back, diving into the ocean or retreating across the wet sand.

’They are retreating...?’ he thought, surprised.

He let out a quiet breath, part of him relieved.

And yet... part of him wished they’d stayed longer.

’I still have a long way to go to reach those heights,’ he thought, glancing at the people who’d slain the A-rank crab. ’But it seems like the attack is done for today.’

Logan turned and looked at the corpses of the C-ranks he’d taken down.

’I’d be suspicious if I didn’t take their cores with me,’ he thought, slashing open their bodies with his glaive.

He dug through each corpse, pulling out four raw mana cores and slipping them into his pocket.

’The other corpses are gone,’ he thought, glancing in the direction where he’d killed the first two C-ranks.

Shrugging, Logan turned around and walked back to the barrier.

"I need a proper shower," he muttered, eyeing the blood all over his body.

As he walked, Logan noticed something on his right.

His eyes shifted to the military squads that had been swallowed by the tidal wave while fighting B-rank monsters.

All four of the B-rank creatures had met their ends at their hands, but it didn’t seem like it was without cost.

As he reached the barrier, two stretchers covered in cloth were carried in beside him.

Logan’s steps slowed.

It wasn’t just the military that had suffered casualties. Everywhere around him, he saw groups with somber expressions as they picked up stretchers and headed back into the battlefield.

He looked at the stretchers again, then at his own hands.

’I’ve been too focused on testing my skills...’ he thought, the heavy realization setting in.

All around him stood people who risked their lives to hold the line and prevent the sea creatures from massacring an entire city.

Even mercenaries who were here purely for money had stood their ground, knowing full well they might not walk away.

’I should stop treating this as a mere exercise,’ he thought, a bitter taste filling his mouth. ’If I’m here, I should do my absolute best to become stronger.’

Logan stepped through the barrier, his eyes on the ground.

Beside him, medical staff and soldiers rushed past in every direction, some shouting orders, some simply moving with blank expressions on their faces.

As Logan’s adrenaline faded away, he felt the dried blood that clung to his skin and the mental exhaustion that had come from his constant awareness.

Jumping on the back of one of the military trucks, Logan spotted a familiar face, also covered in dried blood.

Arnar looked up from the ground, a tired smile appearing on his face as he saw Logan sit down.

"I see you made it out alive," he said, causing the rest of his group to turn to Logan.

"Barely," Logan nodded, letting out a deep sigh.

"More chaotic than you expected, huh," Arnar said.

Logan gave a small nod, glancing at each of Arnar’s teammates.

They all looked exhausted. Their armor had scrapes on them, sleeves were torn off, and their eyes were empty.

A middle-aged woman had her arm completely covered in bandages, while another held his side with shallow breaths.

That’s when Logan noticed a large sack beside them, filled to the brim with raw mana cores from different ranks.

"That’s a good haul," Logan said quietly.

No one replied at first, all of them glancing at the stack of cores.

Arnar eventually nodded. "Yeah. It is."

He paused, his eyes flickering to the bandaged woman with a bitter expression on her face. "Doesn’t feel like much of a win."

Logan looked up, surprised by the weight in his voice.

The bandaged woman opposite them didn’t say anything, clenching the bandages on her arm while her eyes were fixed on the floor.

Arnar continued, his voice low. "One of us got hit during the retreat. Water blasted straight to his chest. Didn’t stand a chance."

The others remained silent, their expressions grim and unreadable.

Logan didn’t speak.

There was nothing he could say that didn’t feel empty.

Time passed by slowly as the engines from the truck started and drove them back to the inner part of the city.

Logan closed his eyes, leaning back.

When the truck finally stopped, they hopped off one by one onto the snow-covered street.

Civilians filled the streets, but the moment they saw the bloodied hunters step out, all chatter and laughter died instantly.

Most stared at them gratefully but kept walking, while some stopped to clap or thank hunters individually.

"Best part of the job," Arnar mumbled, forcing a smile as a family with two small kids walked up to him.

"Dad! That guy’s a real hunter, right? He fought those monsters?" a boy around five years old said, jumping up and down excitedly.

Another small girl from the family pulled herself free from her mother’s hands and ran straight to Arnar with a wide smile on her face.

"Thank you, mister," the girl said, holding out her hand with a candy on it.

Arnar smiled, leaning on one knee to get to their height.

"It isn’t a big deal, little ones," he said. "Make sure you all stay focused in school and you can do the same."

"Can you use your magic powers?" the young boy asked excitedly, before his father stepped forward.

"That’s enough, Jack," the father said, giving a nod to Arnar with an apologetic smile. "This man is extremely tired from protecting us and needs to rest."

"But Dad..." the boy said, looking at his father with disappointment in his eyes.

Logan leaned down beside Arnar, glancing at the boy.

Summoning a small flame above his hands, he watched the boy’s eyes grow wide.

"Wow!" the boy said, pointing at the flame as he looked at his father. "Look at that, Dad!"

"Thank you," the father gave a small nod with a smile.

The girl offered Logan a candy too, giggling as she held it out with both hands.

He blinked in surprise but crouched down and took it gently.

"Thanks," he said with a faint smile. "I’ll treasure it."

Arnar let out a tired chuckle. "Looks like you’ve got fans already."

As the family continued further down the street, Logan saw the boy wave his arms around excitedly as he spoke to his father.

’Kids,’ he thought, smiling.

Arnar stayed quiet for a moment, staring at the ground.

Then he let out a small breath and forced a tired smile.

"...That beer I mentioned earlier," Arnar muttered, looking ahead. "I’m still planning to grab one tonight."

Logan blinked, surprised for a moment before remembering their conversation before the attack.

"Care to join?" Arnar asked, sounding tired.

Logan gave a small nod. "Sure."

A grateful expression appeared on Arnar’s face as he reached into one of his vest pockets.

He pulled out a tiny notepad and scribbled something down on a small piece of paper.

"Here," Arnar said, handing it over.

Logan nodded, glancing at Arnar’s contact information on the paper.

"I’ll give you a call once I’m cleaned up," Logan said, folding the paper into his pocket.

’After a day like this, a beer didn’t sound so bad.’
