Betrayed By The Hero, Loved By The Lord-Chapter 22: Moving on (3)
Chapter 22: Moving on (3)
"They are busy. Try to stay out of their way," Selene advised Agnes.
"Yes, Milady. Are they doing this for dinner? You missed dinner the first night," Agnes said, curious about what the lord liked to have for dinner. "Should I find you another dress and do your hair?"
"That won’t be needed. I’m sure he doesn’t expect much for dinner. I will have a bite and then get a glass of blood. That is all I need. Strangely, I have not run into him since he returned," said Selene.
What was Xavier up to that they didn’t cross paths?
"Did you want to see him, Milady? I could have spoken to another maid or gone to the butler to inform the lord you seek an audience with him. I should have noticed you wanted to speak with him," Agnes said, thinking poorly of herself since she wasn’t too attentive.
"No, I didn’t want to see him. I just expected for him to pop up once more but the estate is quite large for us to see each other often. It will take some time to get used to," Selene said.
Agnes wondered if she heard wrong that Selene sounded disappointed. Shouldn’t Selene like that she didn’t have to see Xavier often since they weren’t a normal couple?
"I should go to dinner now," Selene said, not wanting to be late. All she needed was blood but she still enjoyed sitting at a table.
When Selene reached the dining room, she was surprised to see that it wasn’t set up. If it wasn’t this that made the servants so busy then what were they in a rush for?
"There you are. You are becoming hard to find," Xavier said as he entered the dining room. "What is with the frown? Is something here not to your liking?"
Agnes exited the room to leave the pair alone.
"It is not that. I thought the servants were busy preparing for dinner but it looks like you don’t care to have the table set," Selene said, now realising that there wouldn’t be a need for him to have dinner here.
"All the servants are vampires so they are more active at night. As for dinner, while I might have a bit of meat, I have it in my room. Are you the kind who likes to sit around and pretend to have a big feast like the humans? Their food might help the mixed-bloods but not us," Xavier said, not seeing a reason to dine there.
"I am aware. I grew up with my parents coming together here to speak about their day. For a moment I got excited thinking your servants were preparing for dinner. I haven’t sat with anyone for dinner in many months so it was silly of me to get excited," Selene said, ready to retire to bed since there was nothing to do here.
"I will tell Harold to prepare our blood here and possibly some food so we can look like we are enjoying dinner tomorrow," Xavier said.
"You do not have to do that. It is pointless for you," Selene said, seeing it as a hassle. "I don’t mind having my blood in my bedroom. What is there to speak about here?"
"You won’t tell me about your plans? Here I was looking forward to when you would speak of them. Do you not care to hear about my day? I am hurt," Xavier touched his chest.
"I don’t understand you," Selene confessed. "None of this seems like you."
"Tell me, what does a woman who has not seen me in many years know about me? I thought we weren’t friends, so what do you know about me? Have you been secretly watching me? Don’t frown. I might like it since it is you," Xavier said, smiling whilst Selene frowned.
"You are right. I don’t know you but it is not how I imagined you. It is not bad. Sometimes it is good to be surprised. I look forward to having dinner with you tomorrow," Selene said, genuinely looking forward to the change.
The estate was far too large to not have at least an hour talking to someone other than Agnes.
"And breakfast? You do know if you prefer to have breakfast in your room there will come a time when I will be right there beside you in the morning. I will be happy to feed you in bed-"
Selene covered Xavier’s mouth. "Don’t do that. They all have good hearing."
Xavier bit Selene’s hand but not hard enough for it to hurt. "It is not my fault if you and everyone misunderstand my intentions. Enlighten me. What do you have in mind with me feeding you that makes you blush?"
"Nothing of the sort that is on your mind," Selene replied, quickly moving her hand before she could be bitten again.
"Again with the mind-reading talent. It must not work too well or you would be blushing at what I have imagined. Your angry look is almost as good as your flustered look. I have good news that should make you smile. I have received word from the palace," Xavier shared but did not continue.
Selene waited for him to tell her more but seeing that he was not quick to share more, she asked, "What is it?"
"The court wishes to see you in two days to go along with the divorce. Had I visited the palace for a second time today, we could have had it done by tomorrow. Why aren’t you thrilled?" Xavier asked since she wasn’t jumping for joy.
"I am thrilled but it is so fast. I hope it didn’t trouble you to get the king to do this. You said you weren’t friends but he moved so fast. It is odd," Selene said, curious about what the king could owe Xavier.
"It wasn’t any trouble since he owed me and the annoying bastard I know is looking forward to seeing what will come of our relationship. Like the kingdom’s hero, he thinks I will leave your side soon. There will be many shocked faces to see."
Since Xavier wasn’t worried about the king, Selene decided to not worry about it. She smiled since the end of what tied her to Gabriel was near.
"I will be free of him soon. Thank you," Selene stepped forward to hug Xavier. The reality of what she was doing came after her arms were around Xavier. "I’m sorry," she apologised, surprised by her actions.
Selene tried to step away but Xavier’s arms were now around her. She looked up to question him on why he wouldn’t let her go.
"Why must you apologise for hugging me? I do not despise it so you do not need to apologise. I am awaiting the day you realise it is fine to show your appreciation for the things I do for you. You are free," Xavier released Selene. "Was that so hard?"
"It was not. I should retire to my room to have my blood. I will see you in the morning, Lord Blackthorn," Selene said, curtsying before she parted ways from Xavier.
"It is Xavier. Luckily, we shall soon have the habit fixed."
