Betrayed By The Hero, Loved By The Lord-Chapter 20: Moving on (1)
Chapter 20: Moving on (1)
Cassandra comfortably sat by a window awaiting Gabriel’s return with good news. He left in a terrible mood so she hoped he returned in better spirits for her sake.
Cassandra’s plan to make Selene control her maids had backfired into something she didn’t predict to happen. She didn’t know Selene would be so bold to ask for a divorce.
’He made her sound like he was all she had yet she left and found Lord Blackthorn,’ Cassandra thought.
Cassandra hadn’t heard anything about Gabriel or his wife having some kind of close relationship with Xavier Blackthorn.
"Was she having an affair?" Cassandra wondered. It would create even more gossip if Selene had been walking around looking so pitiful to have someone feel sorry for her while she entertained another man.
Gabriel would not like to admit it but Cassandra saw Selene had found a far better man to latch herself onto. The only problem came with keeping Xavier interested.
"Lord Blackthorn," Cassandra said, curious about what it took to become his lover. Why wasn’t a man like that among the king’s soldiers around the time she met Gabriel?
Cassandra’s thoughts were disturbed by the maid who started to become lazy while fanning her. "Aren’t vampires said to have good strength? Why are your arms tired already?"
Cassandra couldn’t wait to replace many of the vampires with humans so she could feel more comfortable. There would be others for Gabriel to feast on when he needed blood. freewebnσvel.cøm
"You can rest now that he is back but I suggest you be better next time I call for you. I only want to see you be better," Cassandra said so the maid wouldn’t badmouth her for Gabriel to hear.
Cassandra stood up from her chair and started to make her way down to the front door to greet Gabriel.
Upon reaching the now-opened front door, Cassandra noticed that he wasn’t in a better mood than he was when he left her.
"Gabriel, did it not go well?" Cassandra asked, confused by why it wouldn’t when the king owed Gabriel anything he wanted.
"I will not chase her anymore. I will look like a fool asking for her to come home. I have asked for a place in the palace to grow my status. Being the kingdom’s hero will only take me so far. We will get married as soon as my divorce is done," Gabriel said, lifting Cassandra when he stood before her. "We shall have a big wedding."
"I do not mind how big or small the wedding is as long as I can spend the rest of my life with you. I am a little confused. You left wanting to get back Selene here. I do not mind if she is here as your wife as well. What changed?" Cassandra asked, needing the full story.
When Gabriel was so determined to get Selene back, who convinced him to do otherwise? Was it the king?
"I know she will find her way back to me. There is no point in chasing her when she is so stubborn. She will soon find that Lord Blackthorn will not help her as I have in the past. I don’t have time to convince her to come home. I have many people to see. I am the kingdom’s hero," Gabriel repeated what the town said. "I must enjoy myself."
Gabriel set Cassandra down on the ground.
"My mother is on her way here and my father might join us for dinner so you should have dinner perfect. You will need to learn from my mother what they like to see. I’m sure you will do well," Gabriel said, leaving it all to Cassandra.
Cassandra noticed the carriage belonging to Gabriel’s mother entering the gates. Why did his mother need to come so early? "I have never hosted a dinner so I hope they will be kind to me if I am not perfect. If only there had been time for Selene to teach me what she knew."
"You will be better than she was. I will make sure of it," said Gabriel. The town would see that despite being a human, Cassandra was a wonderful choice for a wife.
Gabriel left Cassandra’s side to help his mother out of the carriage.
"I came as soon as the message came to us. That woman left you?" Lucinda questioned, needing to hear it from Gabriel’s mouth.
"We will get a divorce. Selene is not here anymore. She left late in the night and returned with Lord Blackthorn to get her things," Gabriel told the story to his liking. "I will marry Cassandra and move on. I have too much to do to be chasing Selene. She will come back in time."
"And if she does, do not open your home to that woman. She left because she couldn’t handle you being the one with power in this home. I told you to be careful with her," Lucinda said, regretting she had not stepped in more when Gabriel spoke of marriage to a pureblood. "Her kind is always like that."
"Mother," Gabriel shushed Lucinda. It wasn’t only Selene who would be insulted if this got around. Other purebloods would not like how his mother thought of them.
Cassandra didn’t understand how Lucinda could despise purebloods yet she still married a vampire. Weren’t they all the same regardless of their lineage? Shouldn’t Lucinda have hated all of them?
"I know, I know. I am just angry that I have to tell others my son is getting divorced. You shouldn’t have helped her when she didn’t have anyone to turn to. What is she doing getting Lord Blackthorn’s help? Oh," Lucinda touched her face. "She is determined to spread darkness to dim your light. You do not need this now."
"That is why I will not play her game. I will find a place in the palace to continue to make my way up. I am not done making you proud of me. Forget about Selene. Cassandra will need your help to plan our wedding and turn her into the perfect lady," Gabriel said, trying to distract his mother.
Lucinda wasn’t ready to stop speaking about Selene yet. She had to be certain Gabriel was smart enough not to take that woman back. Selene had gotten too comfortable being the one in control simply because she was a pureblood with a little bit more money. Why did she ever need to beg Selene when she needed help?
Lucinda patted Gabriel’s cheek, wanting him to remain in good spirits. "Do not think about that woman. I will see to it that she never shows her face again. You need to focus on getting close to the king. I will be around to help Cassandra."
Lucinda preferred Cassandra already since she was a human. "It must be awful to have to hear about this divorce when you should be happily planning a wedding. I will do my best to distract you."
"I am fine. I am mostly worried about Gabriel. After all, he must worry about what Selene thinks is owed to her. Did I say something wrong?" Cassandra asked, her right hand covering her mouth. Her smile wasn’t noticed by the pair.
"Owed?" Lucinda laughed. "She isn’t owed anything. I’ll die before I let her take anything from my son."
