Chapter 48: Chapter 48: Is She Genuine?

Ray POV

Perhaps calling her beautiful was an understatement.

Because whenever I looked into her eyes, it felt as though a pure and untainted rainbow shimmered within them, and it gave me a glimpse into the soul of a woman who was gentle, genuine, and lovely.

It might sound embarrassingly sappy, but whenever I paid close attention to her, everything else seemed to fade into the background—the room, the world, every distant sound—until all that remained was her presence before me.

There was a uniquely solemn atmosphere between us as she wrapped a bandage around my knuckles.

It looked funny, because I didn’t think it was necessary. Yet, this woman always had her way of making me think and do something irrational, such as sitting like an idiot while she took care of me like a little boy who had accidentally gotten hurt.

"Alright, all done," she said with a thin smile. "Now you can go and start the day."

"What do you want, Claudia?" I asked while staring at her intently. "After what happened last night, why would you do something so unnecessary?"

"I’m just doing my job as a doctor to treat the wounded. Even though I am no longer a General Practitioner, I am still obliged under the doctor’s oath to treat you," Claudia replied.

She looked earnest, and she had always looked like that, especially when we dated back then.

Claudia would always listen to me, take notes of my small habits, and mention little details about my life, showing that she had been paying attention all the time.

But she betrayed me in the end and married my pathetic stepbrother as the ultimate humiliation to me.

So it was actually difficult to determine whether she was genuine or if she just wanted something.

And I was inclined to believe the second one. She must have wanted me to do something, or she simply wanted to make fun of me.

"Cut the crap, Claudia," I said rather sharply. "If you’re truly that genuine, then give me those wedding rings. Everything that happened last night was because of those cheap rings."

The smile on Claudia’s face disappeared instantly. Just as I expected, she had only been trying to be nice because she needed something from me, or she simply wanted to mock me for acting like an idiot.

"I don’t understand you, Claudia," I said as I got up from the sofa. "Miles has done some heinous things to you, and you’re still crying over his wedding ring. Is this really what they call love is blind? Because you’re blind and deaf at this point."

"The rings are reminders of a good time I had back then," Claudia replied. "The rings are cheap, the man is a cheating scumbag, but the memory of the dreamlike wedding I had needs to be preserved, Ray. It is the only way I can stay sane in this hopeless situation."

"What’s so good about a cheap wedding with a broke man like Miles? If a wedding is all you want, I can hold a grand wedding that lasts for a month on a giant cruise," I sneered, but quickly looked away when Claudia’s eyes began to pool with tears again.

I never knew that a woman could cry so much, but Claudia was so sensitive over my comments that she often shed tears.

And just as I expected, no matter how many times I saw those tears, they were still fatal against me.

She quietly wiped her tears and got up from the sofa as well.

"I’ll heat up your breakfast. You can eat with me, or wash yourself first."

"You’re still making breakfast for me even after all that?" I blurted out.

I didn’t mean to sound rude just now, as it was genuinely surprising for her to cook after our fight last night.

Or could it be that she put poison in it? There were cases of a wife poisoning her husband after an argument.

"Don’t get me wrong, Ray. I hate you for our fight last night. I am also scared of what you’d do to me, because clearly you have a violent tendency," Claudia admitted.

I actually wanted to correct her, because that had actually been my very first violent outburst.

For every problem that I had, I would always come up with ideas on how to handle them with ease and execute those ideas with perfect precision, so I never failed at anything I did in life.

But her presence was enough to put my mind in shambles, to the point that I exploded like a madman for a whole night.

However, I didn’t say anything in the end.

"It is written in our contract that I need to cook you breakfast and dinner, so I will do it nonetheless," she added before heating up the breakfast on the stove. "Sit tight if you want breakfast, or I’ll have to dump this in the sink." 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

...

I slid the chair and sat calmly, waiting for her to give me the breakfast that she promised.

I was getting hungry anyway, so when she put corn chowder with a poached egg on the table, I looked at her hurriedly, waiting for her to sit down and eat with me before I could eat my fill.

Claudia gave a quick glance at my bowl and then sat directly facing me. However, she didn’t grab a bowl for herself.

"Get yourself a bowl. We’re going to have breakfast."

"I’m not hungry," Claudia replied curtly. "Besides, I’m not going anywhere. I don’t need energy from breakfast just to lie around like a sloth in this penthouse."

I opened my mouth, trying to find a way to rebuke her, but then realized what she said was right. There was no need for breakfast when she wasn’t going anywhere.

I gave her a quick observation and realized her body was a little too thin underneath her long-sleeved shirt.

She looked too thin for my liking, and it disturbed me seeing her this way.

So I scooped a spoonful of corn chowder and said,

"Then you can eat this with me. I’m not eating my breakfast unless we eat together, Claudia."
