Chapter 49

Gu Anhao seemed to be totally ignorant of what had happened even though Zuo Hancheng threw the cell phone at the corner of the sofa. Gu Anhao leaned her head against Zuo Hancheng’s chest in a confused state.

When Zuo Hancheng picked up the ice pack and applied it against her cheek, Gu Anhao shuddered and frowned before she buried herself in his arms as she mumbled, “I am sorry…”

Zuo Hancheng lowered his eyes and looked at Gu Anhao who was resting in his arms. Gu Anhao should feel grateful that she was drunk. Otherwise, he did not know how she was going to sleep tonight!

“Who are you apologizing to?” Gu Anhao could hear a lukewarm voice coming from above her head.

Anhao sniffled as she raised her head to look at Zuo Hancheng. After that, she raised her hand and touched his face as she grinned, “I am apologizing to you.” Zuo Hancheng glared at her with a cold expression on his face because he was amazed that she could still lie when she was already drunk.

Was she already sober?

“Sit up straight and look at me,” Zuo Hancheng instructed.

However, it seemed as though Gu Anhao really did not have any strength to raise her head at all. She could only lean against him in a weak and helpless manner.

Zuo Hancheng lifted up her chin, forcing her to look right into his eyes. Gu Anhao could not stop herself from shivering when she looked into his cold and indifferent eyes. She turned her head away so that she could free her chin from his hand and rubbed her eyes before closing it. “I am so sleepy…”

Zuo Hancheng let out a huge sigh before he grabbed her by her bathrobe and pulled her up from the sofa. “Go to bed and sleep if you are tired. Come, let your husband coax you to sleep.”

Zuo Hancheng brought Gu Anhao to his bedroom as though she was a little lamb. This time, Gu Anhao was holding her bathrobe tightly against her body so that it would not come loose again.

However, as soon as the both of them arrived at the bedroom door, Zuo Hancheng stopped in an abrupt manner.

Gu Anhao subconsciously raised her hand to push the door open as she was about to walk in. As soon as she touched the door knob, she was suddenly turned around by a strong force.

Gu Anhao was so startled that she turned pale immediately as her body was forcefully pressed against the wall. She was staring right into Zuo Hancheng’s cold and handsome face.

She instinctively raised her hands to defend herself so that she could put some distance between the both of them but she could not push him away. Therefore, she was forced to look right into his eyes.

“When did you sober up? Were you pretending to be drunk all this while?”

Zuo Hancheng looked down at the young girl who was pressed against the doorway. Gu Anhao’s body was stiff and she looked extremely pale because she was feeling so nervous. Her red and swollen left cheek contrasted with the overall fairness of her face. Moreover, Gu Anhao raised one of her hands to block their bodies from touching as she desperately held onto her bathrobe with her other hand, out of fear for what he might do to her.

“Weren’t you blatantly trying to seduce me earlier? What is going on now? Are you sober already?”

Zuo Hancheng increased his grasp on her chin and Gu Anhao could only wince in pain before she replied, “I woke up… when I fell off the sofa…”

Zuo Hancheng stared at her with a cold and indifferent expression on his face as he said, “So, you heard everything that I said on the phone?”

Gu Anhao could not avoid his gaze and she had no choice but to nod her head. “Yes, I heard everything.”

“Very good. This means that I do not need to wait until morning to listen to the lies that you are going to tell me.”

After that, Zuo Hancheng trapped Gu Anhao between his body and the doorway leading into the bedroom.

Gu Anhao felt as though Zuo Hancheng was a vicious villain who was oppressing her but she knew that she would not be able to get out of this situation. She could feel his cold eyes staring right at her.

“Explain yourself.”

“…”

Gu Anhao was stunned and she was at a loss for words. “Explain? What do you want me to explain? I know that it is wrong of me to drink secretly behind your back but I am already feeling very miserable right now. You have already punished me. So, you don’t have to…”

“You know what I am referring to so please do not change the subject.”

Anhao bit her lip as she tried to push his hand away. “Zuo Hancheng, you…”

“Yishi Group is indeed very reputable in A City. Yi Zeyang has only returned to China for merely half a year and he is already preparing to inherit his family’s business. So, what exactly is going on between the both of you? Huh?”

Zuo Hancheng did not give her any opportunity to retreat, or dodge from his question. In fact, he did not know whether he was acting this way because Yishi Group and Shengling Group were both competitors in the business world. Everyone knew that even though there was partnership between the two huge enterprises, they could also be considered as rivals in the business industry.

Therefore, the look in Zuo Hancheng’s eyes was extremely sharp, and he locked his eyes on her like a hawk that would not let go of its prey. Gu Anhao was at a loss and she did not know what to do. She could only stare at him with a blank expression on her face before she finally replied, “There is nothing going on between us and you also know that he is just a guest professor that A High invited to the campus not too long ago.”

Zuo Hancheng had already gotten used to Gu Anhao’s skill of lying without even blinking an eye.

As the both of them were so close together, Gu Anhao could feel his warm breath against her face as he sneered. This was the first time that this man was so cold to her, and he was obviously very dissatisfied with her answer.

When Gu Anhao finally realized that it was impossible for her to continue hiding the truth, she could only wish that she was still drunk at this time. This way, she could probably avoid having this conversation with Zuo Hancheng in the morning the next day.

Who would have expected that she would sober up and be wide awake as soon as she fell off the couch? Moreover, this had to happen when Zuo Hancheng was answering an incoming phone call from Yi Zeyang. At that time, Gu Anhao felt as though her heart was about to jump out of her throat.

She already anticipated that she would have to face this situation sooner or later. She knew that Yi Zeyang would find out about her marriage one way or the other. However, she did not expect him to find out about it so soon or in this manner.

Gu Anhao wanted to pretend that she was still drunk and avoid this topic for a little longer but there was no way that she could escape Zuo Hancheng.

She suddenly recalled that Zuo Hancheng was waiting for her in front of her school entrance. She realized that Zuo Hancheng probably saw Yi Zeyang sending her back to the campus.

The only reason why he did not ask her about it was simply because she was so drunk earlier and he would not have been able to get an answer out of her anyway. Therefore, Gu Anhao knew that there was nothing that she could do but to explain the situation to him.

“When I was younger… my mother brought me along with her when she remarried into the Yi family. Yi Zeyang is my brother.”

Gu Anhao hoped that Zuo Hancheng would not ask too many questions since she had already provided this kind of explanation.

True enough, Zuo Hancheng was stunned for a moment because of the unexpected answer. The coldness in his eyes started to fade gradually when he realized that Gu Anhao was telling him the truth.

“When you were still a child?” Gu Anhao did not want to talk about this but she really did not want Zuo Hancheng to misunderstand the relationship between Yi Zeyang and herself.

Therefore, she swallowed her pride and said, “I already told you that I am an illegitimate child that the Gu family refuses to recognize. My mother got separated from Gu Tianming when she was still pregnant with me. After that, she married someone else and I grew up in that family. My mother sent me back to the Gu family before she died so that I would be ‘lucky’ enough to be the mayor’s daughter…”

“Enough.”

Zuo Hancheng interrupted her before she could finish her sentence. He could see the pain and unwillingness in her eyes and he knew how miserable she must have felt when she was trying to explain everything to him. He did not want to force her to relive those wounds that she was trying to forget.

“That’s enough. You don’t have to say anything else.”
