Chapter 139: The only condition

The condition Uri gave wasn’t a condition at all for the Cheetah tribe. They had been losing members of their tribe for some time now. Larger animals have started migrating to their territory. The rituals performed by their priest have caused the land to become less fertile, and there are fewer things for them to forage. They have been wanting to seek out a new territory.

As for the Boar and Ram tribes, they have not experienced any significant loss. Joining Visha’s pack is actually a loss to them. Even if they knew where the hope of the Beast Continent was, their tribes joining their small group would be of no use.

"I am not asking everyone in your tribe to join. You may choose the people you wish to have join. I can only say that no matter who you choose, they have to work. We will not allow people who strain our resources," Uri explained.

"The choice is yours; this is the condition I want. Go back to your tribe leaders and priests. Ask for their opinion. Whichever you choose, just know, we will give no information about the howl to anyone outside. And you will never be able to find it. We are not looking for enemies. We are simply trying to protect it, just as you want to."

Alair quickly bid farewell to everyone. They had to rush back to their tribe. The reason they were able to arrive so quickly in the first place is because of how quickly they move. Their tribe is more than a week away. They had not rested properly since they made their way to the mountain. Now they needed to rush on their way to give their leader the news.

Not long after, Roc and Alin also left. Visha, Uri, and Xeno were left in front of the gate.

"Why’d you have them join?" Xeno asked as soon as everyone left.

"Because we need people. And because if they do not join, we will never tell them the reason for the howl. They risk setting up camp nearby to keep a lookout, which is not good for them. Or they will never be able to see the very thing they treasure," Uri said.

"And what happens when they find out that thing is me?" Visha asked.

"As long as they have no thoughts of betrayal, they will not be a problem," Uri said. "Have you forgotten the consequence of betrayal?"

Visha then realized that if they were to join, they would be bound under the same laws they had drawn up. Their betrayal would notify them. It would also have its own consequences on their bodies.

"Let’s go in. We can talk inside," Xeno said. His eyes scanned the wooded area outside.

The gate opened to reveal the pack members inside. If they weren’t wrong, the pack members should have been listening. As for how much they heard, the trio was not sure. Seeing them standing there like children caught stealing candy, Visha couldn’t help but laugh.

"You all could have run away when the gate was being opened. Why wait to be scolded?" Visha asked.

Hearing her say this, they all started to scatter. Visha shook her head as she walked back home with Uri and Xeno.

Before she could get there, Nimo came running over. "Priestess, my Ba says I should wait for you. He said Sister Lyra is sleeping."

There was momentary confusion until she remembered what happened earlier. She told Nimo to tell his Ba that she would be there soon. The little cub quickly ran off.

"What’s wrong?" Xeno asked.

"I’ll tell you later," Visha responded.

They made their way to Lyra and Cato’s house. They had been living together since Lyra became a pack member. Visha had yet to do a mate ceremony for them. Granted, mates don’t need it. But in recognition of the tradition and to let others know they are both taken, it should be done at least symbolically.

As they stepped into the house, they noticed a stressed Cato. He was pacing back and forth just outside the door. As soon as he heard them arrive, his head snapped up, and he started walking towards them.

"Stop. Turn around. Lead the way." Xeno said.

Cato followed every instruction as if electrified.

When they arrived in the room, they saw Lyra on the bed, sweating. Her body was shivering. Her eyes, under her lids, kept darting around. Her hands gripped the fur on the bed. And a frown marred her features.

Visha sat beside her, placing her hand on Lyra’s forehead. Her skin was cold and clammy. Instinctively, Visha went onto the bed, propped herself up, and pulled Lyra into her arms.

She hadn’t noticed what she was doing until it already happened.

The relief from Lyra was almost immediate. Cato, Uri, and Xeno all saw it. The male mates became jealous, but they held back. This wasn’t the time to be jealous.

"Do you need anything?" Uri asked.

Visha shook her head. "She’ll be fine soon."

"Really?" Cato asked. His voice cracked, and the hands at his side fisted his loincloth.

Visha nodded. She soothed Lyra’s hair.

What’s happening? she asked.

She was not asking the system. She was asking the beast. She knew it would answer.

She is kin.

What do you mean, kin?

She smells the same. We have the same bloodline.

Hearing this answer, Visha froze. Her hand paused its soothing before continuing. If they share the same bloodline, does that mean they really are related like Uri thought?

Many questions are circling Visha’s mind. She didn’t know which one to grasp and ask.

Does this mean she has someone like you, too?

No, she is different. She has grown up here; they are not separated.

So, you’re saying we’re separated because of where I grew up.

The hmm sounded in her mind.

Then why were we separated?

What she got was silence. No matter how she called, there was no answer. Since she would not be getting an answer, she could only leave it as is.

It took two days for Lyra to finally wake up.
