Chapter 93: Chapter 92: Drumbeats

Si Shuo considered her Beast Husbands. Their Combat Power Levels were all at Level 8 or above, meeting the minimum threshold. As long as one of them was conscripted as a Beast Soldier, the others wouldn’t have to take turns going on hunting missions in the Border City District.

But Yimei had seven Beast Husbands. Aside from the two required to stay by her side, two of the remaining five had to go to the Border City District.

The first four Beast Husbands Yimei had accepted didn’t have high Combat Power Values, so hunting in the Border City District would be exceptionally dangerous for them—even life-threatening.

But if Rongzhi, Pan Zhou, and Zhe Heng took turns hunting, the Beast Husbands left by Yimei’s side would be too low-Level. If anything happened, the others would be too far away to help!

Si Shuo tapped her head and quietly voiced her thoughts. "Ji Liang, maybe I should give Yimei a few Bone Marrow Cleansing and Vein Cutting Pills?

"The Beast God designated her as my follower, and she really values emotional bonds. Kouba and the others were the first to join her, and they’re all working hard to get stronger. But their aptitude is what it is, and they’re destined to never reach a high Combat Power Level.

"With the Bone Marrow Cleansing and Vein Cutting Pills, their low Level means they’ll be able to jump several Levels at once. At the very least, they can quickly reach Level 8 and be able to protect themselves!"

Ji Liang pinched her cheek. "Little Shushu, you can decide for yourself. Their increased Combat Power Value will help us in one way or another.

"Beast Husbands are brought together by females, and they form their own private cliques. The Beastmen from the Southern Continent have such low Combat Power, it’s bound to cause some family conflicts sooner or later."

Si Shuo hugged Ji Liang tightly and nuzzled his chest, chuckling. "I like you so much, Ji Liang!"

Ji Liang kissed her forehead, his golden eyes exceptionally bright and filled with the warmth of the morning sun.

"HISS... I know that Little Shushu treats me differently. Don’t worry. Even if you find a Level 15 Beast Husband in the future, I won’t feel the least bit insecure. I’ll just work harder to surpass him.

"Just... be extra sweet to me then, Little Shushu. I’m easy to please."

Si Shuo hummed in agreement. "My great snake is considerate, smart, and incredibly powerful. I love you the most!"

Ji Liang grew a little excited and desperately wanted to whisk the little female into his tent. But the relationship between a male and a female wasn’t just about physical intimacy; he was no shallow Snake Beastman.

He stroked her flushed, glistening ear and gave her a quick peck before chuckling. "Little Shushu, tell me something. Have you told every one of us Beast Husbands that you love them the most?"

Si Shuo playfully bit him on the chin and laughed along. "Ji Liang, you’re not supposed to call me out on it."

The rules of this world had squeezed her heart into a durian, with each Beast Husband occupying one of its spiky tips...

She never even knew she had the potential to be a king of the seas! Though, her sea wasn’t very big—it couldn’t support too many fish.

Ji Liang was just teasing her, hoping to get her to pay him a little more attention.

After they bantered for a while, Ji Liang pulled Si Shuo up and took her hand, leading her toward Yimei.

Xu Chi, who had been leaning nearby and feigning sleep, straightened up and followed them.

Yimei was making clothes for her cubs. When she saw Si Shuo, she smiled, patted the tree stump beside her, and offered a basket of wild fruit. "The cubs and their Father gathered these on the outskirts of the forest."

Si Shuo glanced over at Xu Chi. He smiled, snapped his fingers, and a defensive barrier materialized around them.

Yimei grew a little tense and lowered her voice. "Si Shuo, is something wrong?"

Si Shuo chuckled. "It’s nothing serious. It’s just that, as you know, Ji Liang has traveled far and wide and has collected quite a few good things.

"Here. This small porcelain bottle contains eleven Bone Marrow Cleansing and Vein Cutting Pills. One for each person in your family. It should give your constitutions a little boost!"

Yimei carefully accepted the palm-sized White Jade Porcelain Bottle, clutching it to her heart as she smiled. "Si Shuo, after the Beast God chose me as a Female Saint, I wished for a superpower. I received a Healing Ability.

"Males have decent self-healing; they can pull through as long as an injury isn’t fatal. But we females are different. If we feel even slightly unwell and don’t pay attention to it, we can easily become gravely ill or even die.

"Regardless of a female’s fertility, giving birth is like having a brush with death. Especially during the first or second time, the Beast God might claim two or three out of every ten females.

"So, I’ve already made a plan. Once we get to the Beast City and get settled, I’m going to set up a stall in front of our home to treat other females.

"It doesn’t really matter how many Crystal Stones they give me. We’ll build a good reputation, and I’ll get to practice my superpower!"

Si Shuo nodded enthusiastically. "That’s a great plan. Hmm, my superpower is accelerating plant growth, and I can identify some herbs and edible plants. I could prepare some common medicinal ingredients.

"The two of us could be perfect partners and open a clinic."

In any era, the status and reputation of a healer were always respectable.

’Besides, being a healer isn’t exhausting, and it would give us something to do so our lives don’t just revolve around our Beast Husbands and cubs every day.’

’I should go back and make a list of common emergency remedies—for things like colds, diarrhea, pain relief, and stopping bleeding—and see if those herbs can be cultivated.’

Suddenly, the sound of a beating drum—DONG! DONG!—echoed from the distance. Everyone stood up to look, and some Beastmen even started running toward the noise.

One of Yimei’s Beast Husbands, Hang He, transformed into a gray fox and darted off to investigate.

Ji Liang raised an eyebrow, his eyes gleaming with anticipation. "If I’m not mistaken, some Beastmen have set up a fighting ring.

"Males love to fight. With the Central Continent’s Beast City organizing this spring hunt, all the Beastmen who’ve come have high Combat Power.

"Sparring between males of similar Levels is a huge help for increasing one’s Combat Power and achieving breakthroughs.

"After all, Fierce Beasts are simple-minded and fight purely on instinct. Any Beastman with enough hunting experience can slay them with ease.

"But a fight between Beastmen involves countless variables and techniques. It’s the best way to hone one’s Combat Power!"

Kouba and the other lower-Level males hung their heads, their dejection palpable. But Xu Chi, Rongzhi, and Pan Zhou radiated a sharp fighting spirit, like blades eager to be unsheathed.

The powerful DONG! DONG! of the drum seemed to pound in every Beastman’s heart, their own pulses quickening to match its rapid, forceful rhythm.

Si Shuo and Yimei couldn’t sit still any longer. They followed the males into the stream of onlookers, while the yelping cubs were scooped into their Fathers’ arms.

A Beast Skin drum was set up outside the largest Beast Skin Bag. An especially burly Hippo Beastman with three green stripes on his neck was pounding it with a wooden mallet.

Beastmen were crowding into the Beast Skin Bag, buzzing with excitement. "The Qingxi Tribe just arrived! That tribe is full of huge, sturdy Beastmen like hippos, rhinos, and elephants."

"I’ve heard of them. The Qingxi Tribe doesn’t like to hunt in the forests. They always set up a fighting ring to win prey from other Beastmen instead.

"The spring hunt mission is judged by the number of Fierce Beasts killed and Crystal Stones acquired. They’re just cleverly using their strengths to take a shortcut!"

"If they’re winning prey from other Beastmen, what are they betting? And how are they so sure they’ll win? It’s not like everyone else is an idiot who’ll just line up and hand over the Fierce Beasts they worked so hard to hunt, right?"

Someone voiced the question on everyone’s mind.

A spectacle this grand couldn’t just be for a bit of fun. There had to be plenty of Beastmen in the know stirring things up.
