Chapter 244: Chapter 243: How Innocent Could He Be?

The whole affair was causing such a commotion that Yin Jiang didn’t need to deliberately inquire about it. He learned the gist of things just by sitting down for a bowl of noodles.

It turned out that after the group of traders was rescued, some of them, furious about losing the goods they had wagered their entire fortunes on, took the opportunity to rush to the front mountain. There, they found the Rogue Beasts sleeping like logs.

To be more precise, they had no heartbeats and weren’t breathing! The hundred or so traders immediately gathered together, swept through the front mountain in a grand display, and returned to the city, bringing the helpless Female Slaves with them.

The Rogue Beasts had been incredibly arrogant and vicious, frequently pillaging the city. The Beastmen loathed them to the extreme. Upon hearing the news that the North Head Tribe had been wiped out, they celebrated all through the night, vowing to capture any stragglers to vent their fury!

Right now, everyone was still beating gongs and drums in celebration.

Traveling with Yin Jiang were Rongzhi the White-tailed Sea Eagle, who was escorting Yimei, and He Shan the Saber-toothed Tiger.

They were all wearing Human Skin Masks and had smeared medicinal herbs on their bodies to temporarily conceal their scents.

"Yin Jiang, I’ve already summoned Kouba. I believe he’ll find us soon," Yimei said, having been on edge for the past two days. The good life she now enjoyed was all thanks to the support of Si Shuo, Zhi Le, and Ji Liang.

Yin Jiang nodded and said in a low voice, "Gubei is rather chaotic. We all need to be careful."

He couldn’t bring himself to tell Yimei to go back. After all, the journey from Gubei to Guangshou City was a day long, and there was no telling what they might encounter. A lone Twelfth Level Saber-toothed Tiger Beastman wasn’t guaranteed to be able to protect a Female Saint.

As they neared Gubei, Yimei had summoned Kouba. Kouba, sensing his Female Saint approaching, had been waiting where he was. Now, feeling that she had stopped and was calling him again by stroking her Beast Mark, he transformed into his beast form and charged toward the feeling.

After they finished their noodles and sat for a moment, Kouba found them!

"Yimei?" Kouba faltered for a moment upon seeing the strangers, but then he smiled, stepped forward, and pulled Yimei into a tight embrace.

Yimei had missed him too. She gently patted his back and whispered, "Let’s talk somewhere else."

Kouba nodded and, taking her hand, led them to the place where he was staying.

Yin Jiang set up a Protective Shield and asked with some urgency, "Kouba, where’s Ji Liang?"

Kouba froze, then pressed his lips together and shook his head. "I don’t know either. We agreed beforehand that I would scout for information in the city, while he would wait for an opportunity outside the North Head Tribe’s camp.

Last night, he said an opportunity had come up and told me to wait for him outside the city after midnight. But I waited until dawn, and he never came. All I heard was the news that the North Head Tribe had been annihilated.

I’ve spent all day trying to gather information, pretending to be a curious bystander and listening to what those traders were saying.

Not one of them is telling the truth. Every person’s story is different, as if each and every one of them was the key figure in the destruction of the North Head Tribe!"

Yin Jiang’s brow furrowed. After listening to everything Kouba had discovered, he nodded, glanced at the darkness outside, and said, "Let’s rest for now. We can talk about this tomorrow."

With that, he gave the room to Yimei and Kouba. He went outside, built a bonfire, and by its flickering light, he meticulously wrote down everything Kouba had said and all that he had heard himself, then placed the notes into his storage space.

Ji Liang’s Level wasn’t high among the males in their family, but he was their helmsman. When he was around, not only could their female rest easy, but all of them could also focus on their own work without worry.

Whenever a problem arose, he could always provide a good, reliable solution.

In the three or four months they had spent together, Yin Jiang had fully integrated into their small family.

He loved the feeling of everyone pulling together, helping one another, and jointly protecting their female and their cubs. They would occasionally bicker and prank each other, but it was all in good fun, and their bond only deepened because of it.

They weren’t blood brothers, but their bond was stronger than that of true siblings. They were friends who fought side-by-side, admiring one another. There was competition, pressure, and motivation; they sparred to improve together.

Without them even realizing it, the bond between the Couple Brothers was growing stronger.

Because Si Shuo had activated the Time Law on his end, Yin Jiang quickly received a reply.

Everyone agreed that Ji Liang must have been the one to wipe out the North Head Tribe. After all, silently taking down two to three hundred Rogue Beasts would definitely require the involvement of a Sharp Spike Wood Spirit.

Those traders were lying. They had been taken captive, and it was Ji Liang who had saved them!

Yin Jiang thought so too. He extinguished the bonfire, hid himself in the darkness, and leaned against a wall, his eyes half-closed.

The night was as thick as ink. Even with a bright moon hanging in the sky, the ground remained pitch-black—so dark you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face.

Yin Jiang’s eyes snapped open, completely devoid of drowsiness. He concealed his aura, making his presence as negligible as a plant on the side of the road.

He walked silently in the shadows of the walls, moving bit by bit toward the traders’ encampment.

Just as he expected, at this hour, most of the traders were sound asleep. Only a few remained by the bonfire, roasting meat and exchanging a few words now and then to stave off sleep and stand guard.

Yin Jiang found a dark spot that completely hid his form and continued to feign sleep with his eyes closed.

After midnight, two Beastmen reluctantly got up, went to the nearby river to splash their faces with water, and took over the watch.

"Earlier tonight, I heard the party that went out to the North Head Tribe’s camp caught five or six Rogue Beasts. They dislocated all their joints, skinned them alive, ripped out their tongues... Basically, they did everything they could to inflict the most pain without killing them. It’s so cruel... Do you think that Rogue Beast who let us go might have been among them?" a Gray Wolf Beastman sighed, asking his companion in a hushed voice.

The Leopard Beastman sneered. "They’re all from the North Head Tribe. How innocent could he be? For all we know, he let us go on purpose to misdirect everyone.

Think about it. The North Head Tribe was entrenched near Gubei for ages; they must have stockpiled plenty of good things. How is it that when we searched, we found so little?

He must have taken it all, but made it seem like we were the ones who lucked out... No matter how we try to explain, no one believes us. The way everyone looks at us now... it’s like we’re a bunch of fat sheep ready for slaughter..."

"It’s a damn shame about those Female Slaves. If we hadn’t been scared witless and run back to the city for protection, unsure of the situation with the North Head Tribe, the City Lord Mansion wouldn’t have confiscated them... Who’d have guessed there were only ten or twenty of them left? With over a hundred of us, you think we couldn’t have taken them down?" The Gray Wolf Beastman glanced toward one of the tents, from which some arousing sounds could be heard.

"Tell me about it!" The Leopard Beastman was resentful as well. "Over thirty Female Slaves... At the very least, two or three of the brothers could have shared one and had as much fun as they wanted. Not like now, where we only saved five or six, and even they are being monopolized by those few High-level Beastmen..."

"What’s so damn special about that female, Yu Jing? How’d she get the team leader to be so protective of her right off the bat? Female Slaves are just for relieving urges. It’s not like he can go at it all night, can he? What’s wrong with letting the brothers have a turn to unwind?"
