Lu Xining’s car entered the Ji Family residence, which could be said to have proceeded without obstacle.
The old butler seemed to have known she would come today, waiting at the door early to greet her.
The car stopped at the entrance to the garden.
Lu Xining pushed the car door open and went straight to the point, inquiring about the whereabouts of the two children.
“Where are Xiao Chao and Xiao Ze?”
After Ji Muye picked up the two kids, he had sent them straight back to the old house to have dinner with Old Sir Ji.
...
The old butler knew that if he were honest with her, Lu Xining probably wouldn’t even think about setting foot in the Ji Family residence.
But the young master had been waiting in the study for a long time.
He sighed in his heart, lowered his eyes respectfully, and said, “Only the young master knows the whereabouts of the two young masters.”
“Madam, the young master is waiting for you in the study.”
The other housemaids in the house had already been cleared out, and the old butler left after escorting Lu Xining inside.
It was a place where she had lived for five years, and although it had been two years since she was last there, the location of the study was not unfamiliar to Lu Xining.
She suppressed the raging anger in her heart, ignoring the elevator, and strode directly toward the stairs.
Her inherent upbringing and politeness had her knocking on the door before entering.
“Ji Muye, open the door!”
But the anger in her voice was still not hidden.
As soon as her words ended, the man really did come obediently to open the door, stepping aside to let her in.
Lu Xining didn’t enter the study, instead facing Ji Muye through a door.
“Why did you suddenly take Xiao Chao and Xiao Ze away?”
Ji Muye had no intention of hiding it from her, and frankly said, “Grandfather called and said he wanted to see his grandsons, so I sent them back to the old house to have dinner with Old Sir Ji.”
Thinking of the revered and family-oriented Old Sir Ji of the Ji Family, Lu Xining fell silent.
In the five years of marriage to Ji Muye, Old Sir Ji was one of the Ji Family elders who had treated her well.
“Old Sir Ji wants to see his grandsons, I can arrange for a car to take them over personally, but you picked up the children an hour early and didn’t let anyone tell me, what’s your intention?”
She wasn’t foolish. Today she had someone teach Liu Xixi a lesson, and in the afternoon Ji Muye personally took the two sons away; there was no way there wasn’t a connection between the two events.
While she had a guess in her heart, she still wanted to test if there might be other possibilities.
Lu Xining’s fingers curled, and she asked in a hoarse voice, “Ji Muye, what exactly is your purpose?”
The man in front of her was wearing a suit that he had not changed out of yet, with sharp eyebrows and starry eyes, a cold complexion; he looked nothing like the man in the picture in front of the gynecology department.
“Today you had your bodyguard slap Liu Xixi a hundred times.”
Lu Xining closed her eyes, her right mouth corner briefly twitching with full irony.
“So what, are you going to stand up for her?”
Ji Muye frowned slightly, his voice low, “I’m not here to stand up for her, I just wanted to see you.”
During this time, Lu Xining had been avoiding him, blocking his calls, not replying to his emails, and not letting him in her door. If Ji Muye hadn’t resorted to this strategy, he would never have been able to see her.
“See me for what?”
She didn’t think there was anything to talk about between the two of them, other than the children.
Ji Muye grabbed her arm, “Let’s talk inside.”
“There’s no need.”
Lu Xining turned to leave, but the man refused to let go.
“Why do I keep helping Liu Xixi? Come inside, and I’ll tell you why.”
The Ji Family study was very large, with a small reception area outside.
On the sofa lay a throw pillow that Lu Xining had bought before, light blue, contrasting sharply with the black sofa.
The coffee table was filled with snacks and fruits, and Ji Muye pushed the items forward, saying, “The butler still remembers you, he specially prepared the pastries you used to love, give them a try.”
The chef at the Ji Family might not make the best food, but his pastry skills were unmatched.
At least in the two years since Lu Xining’s divorce, she had never tasted sweets better than those made by the Ji Family chef.
But after she sat down, she didn’t touch anything on the coffee table.
“Ji Muye, get to the point.”
The man sat on the sofa beside her, his voice a deep rumble, adding a note of helplessness in the silence of the study.
“Liu Xixi is pregnant.”
Lu Xining suddenly looked up, “You want me to spare her?”
Knowing she would be angry, Ji Muye immediately tried to explain, but wasn’t as fast as the words popping out of her mouth, dashing his composure.
“Ji Muye, are you speaking up for her because the child in her belly is innocent, or because that child is yours?”
The implications of her words caused his explanation to stiffen on his lips.
Ji Muye closed his eyes and took a deep breath before continuing to speak. “What does Liu Xixi’s child have to do with me?”
“Xining, why do you always want to pin some crime on me? I’ve told you, I never cheated!”
Lu Xining quickly adjusted her emotions, replying to him, “But your behavior is no different from cheating.”
Ji Muye, who was naturally handsome, had his dark eyes that now carried an added layer of focus and seriousness, shimmering like the starry sky under the indoor lights.
Lu Xining turned her face away, refusing to look into the man’s eyes, her gaze landing aimlessly in a corner.
Yet, Ji Muye suddenly stretched out his hand, and just as he was about to grasp hers, Lu Xining pressed herself back into the couch to avoid his approaching hand.
His large and imposing body, squeezed between the sofa and coffee table, appeared somewhat uncomfortable.
Her tightly clenched fingertips were pried open bit by bit, his long, distinct fingers entwined tightly with hers, leaving her unable to break free.
Ji Muye countered, “Xining, I never thought of abandoning you.”
Even though he was kneeling, his gaze still towered above hers, but he was willing to lower his proud head for her, as if submitting to her.
“Can we talk calmly and peacefully?”
The quiet study.
The clock hands continuously circled the wall.
Ji Muye’s voice was naturally magnetic, and when he calmly recounted the past with that voice, it was easy to become immersed in that scenario.
“Liu Xixi saved Xiao Ze’s life.”
From Ji Muye’s calm narration, Lu Xining finally learned the reason he had been helping Liu Xixi, and she found it even more laughable.
“Xiao Ze was almost kidnapped by human traffickers; it was Liu Xixi who risked her life to save him, and for that, she was stabbed by the traffickers and ended up in the hospital.”
“The knife wounded her uterus, doctors said she might never be able to get pregnant in her lifetime; that’s too heavy a burden for a woman.”
Ji Muye was always mindful of Lu Xining’s emotions, his voice steady without any fluctuations, for fear that she would misinterpret his thoughts about Liu Xixi through his tone.
Lu Xining nodded, “Mhm, very touching story.”
She sneered lightly, countering him, “Only, so what?”
Lu Xining’s reaction was beyond Ji Muye’s expectations.
He thought she would be surprised, would forgive, would sigh; he did not expect Lu Xining to show only sarcasm and self-ridicule.
He grasped her soft hand in his palm more firmly, his brows knit calling her.
Lu Xining, staring into his eyes, continued to ask, “Do you expect me, this child’s mother, to be eternally grateful, to treat her like an ancestor?”
