Chapter 50: Test

Hearing his words, Dapper didn’t respond. He didn’t feel pity or remorse for Shinro. After all, it was the same thing he used to do back in his early days as a thief in his previous world. Countryside kids were always the easiest targets, they were naive and too trusting. Since Shinro was from a village, it made sense he got swindled by rookie thieves.

"You got scammed because you were dumb. Why would you trust a stranger with your money?" Dapper said with a small chuckle.

"That’s the point! That’s exactly why I don’t want to trust you!" Shinro shot back, waving his hands as if to prove a point.

"But you’ve got nothing for me to steal. If you still think I’m a thief, fine. I don’t need to prove anything to you. Besides, I already got the answer I needed," Dapper shrugged casually.

Shinro sighed but still stayed next to him.

Suddenly, the massive academy gate swung open and a tall man, roughly six feet, stepped forward, dressed in an all-white suit with a matching hat perched on his head. As he approached, he removed the hat, revealing his face. He had short black hair and two dangling earrings. His features were sharp—defined brows, a chiseled jaw, and a noticeable pendant hanging from his neck. Dapper instantly recognized it—it was a holy church pendant. Uncle Roy often wore a similar one, though smaller in size.

The man halted a few feet away from the crowd.

"Sucks that I got stuck overseeing this year’s enlistment," the man muttered, scanning the crowd with calm, sharp eyes.

"My name is Deegan. I’ll be your instructor for this year’s academy intake. I’m also the only one in charge of screening. Over the years, we’ve seen a surge in fake applicants. As per the academy’s rules, only those with Combat or Magic systems are qualified. Yet, for some reason, Craft-type users still apply and last year hit an all-time high. Normally, we weed out the fakes during screening, but this year I personally requested to handle things... and I will punish anyone found lying," Deegan said, his tone turning serious.

Then, out of nowhere, a massive burst of Mana exploded from his body. The sheer pressure forced everyone, the guards included—to fall to their knees. freёweɓnovel_com

’Monster... Who is this monster?!’ Dapper’s eyes widened in disbelief as the crushing pressure forced him down. He couldn’t even lift his head.

’Fuck! Even with my Mana pool raised to 200, it feels like I’m suffocating just from his presence. And he’s so young—can’t be older than his early twenties!’ Dapper cursed internally.

"So that’s Deegan?! What a monster!" Shinro muttered, kneeling beside Dapper.

"You know him?" Dapper asked.

"Wait, you live in the city and you don’t know him? He’s currently the strongest combatant. I knew he was powerful, but this is beyond expectations," Shinro replied, his eyes wide with awe.

"I see... strongest combatant, huh," Dapper muttered. Then, the pressure suddenly vanished, and everyone managed to rise to their feet.

"Haa, my bad. I just wanted to see if anyone exceptional would react differently. Sadly, none did—or maybe you’re all hiding. Either way, follow me inside. The fakes will be exposed soon enough," Deegan said, turning around and gesturing for them to follow.

The crowd of nearly a thousand quickly surged forward, following Deegan, whose steps were impossibly fast, even though it looked like he was simply walking.

Entering the academy grounds, they were surprised to find no buildings in sight. Instead, there were only tiled roads stretching out for miles in all directions.

"What the hell?" Dapper muttered, but he suddenly came to an abrupt stop when Deegan paused and turned to face them.

"The test begins now, and the fakes will be filtered out," Deegan announced. "You’ll all be sent to one of the military-controlled dungeons. It’s a low-level dungeon filled with Rank-1 monsters. Rarely, you might encounter Rank-2 monsters, but in any life-threatening situation, you’ll be rescued. That doesn’t mean you should be incapable of handling a simple Rank-1 creature. If you perform poorly, you won’t be enlisted and will be labeled a fake—we don’t need trash in the military. Use your system abilities, or you’ll be automatically disqualified. As for the fakes..." A wicked grin spread across Deegan’s face as he said the last part, making some applicants nearly shit their pants.

Without warning, Deegan grabbed the pendant around his neck with his left hand. Then, crouching, he slammed his right palm into the ground with such force that cracks split across the earth.

"Teleport!" he shouted.

Instantly, a blinding flash of golden light engulfed the crowd, and they vanished from where they stood.

---

*BAM!*

They were suddenly teleported into what looked like an underground cave complex. It was vast, with glowing Mana crystals dangling from the ceiling. Multiple tunnels stretched out before them.

Looking around, Dapper quickly realized this wasn’t just a cave. The structure had an artificial feel—it looked too organized to be natural. The air was thick with the metallic stench of blood.

As he scanned the area, he noticed the others already forming groups, some charging into the tunnels without hesitation.

’Idiots. They didn’t even take time to assess the environment,’ Dapper thought, watching eager applicants rush into the unknown depths.

While surveying, he noticed several small black orbs floating above, cleverly hidden among the hanging Mana crystals.

’Surveillance orbs... So we’re being monitored. But how did that guy pull off a teleportation spell at such a large scale, Bay? He’s not even a mage.’

[Master, what Deegan used was an artifact—one that stores spells. He simply fueled it with his Mana.]

"Isn’t that unfair to mages?"

[Not really. There are many types of artifacts. That one seemed custom-made for Deegan. Once he uses all the stored spells, a high-ranking mage will have to recharge it for him. I’m not sure how many spells it can hold—but lately, the church has been doing some shady stuff.]

’I see...’

Suddenly, Dapper felt a tap on his shoulder. Turning around, he saw Shinro standing there.

"I’ve been looking all over for you, man. With so many people rushing in, it took a while to find you. I did some scouting—I think this dungeon is filled with Ice Kobolds, monsters that use ice magic," Shinro explained.

At that moment, Dapper could hear distant screams echoing from deep within the dungeon.
