Back To The 80s: President's Doted Wife-Chapter 1468 - 1469: Disaster’s Victims
Qi Fenglian insisted, along with several people’s persuasion, Cheng Su ultimately stayed at home waiting for news. Since she would have to travel at night and was due to give birth in about a month, if anything happened, who could take responsibility?
So finally, Qi Fenglian and Deng Weixia went to Xi County’s hospital to find Mother Qi. Considering it was too late, Cheng Su consulted the leaders in the military, explained the situation, and got a car to send them over.
"If there’s any news, make sure to call home immediately." Cheng Su instructed.
Qi Fenglian and Deng Weixia both nodded, and they followed the young soldier who came to pick them up.
Once they left, Cheng Su waited at home for news, feeling a void inside. Worried about her being alone, Liu Wenjing brought her child over and slept there as well.
With anxiety in her heart, Cheng Su lay on the bed, unable to sleep, even the baby in her belly seemed restless.
"You miss your dad too, don’t you?" Cheng Su gently touched her belly and sighed: "When things happen, you realize the importance of the head of the family."
She didn’t know if Qi Taiguo had reached the mission site yet. She hoped he could complete the task soon because if something happened with Mother Qi... without him, it would be difficult.
Where was Qi Taiguo? He was staring at the vast flood in front of him.
This flood was devastating; even the bridge was washed away, cutting off the only path to the destination.
"We’ll have to switch to boats to get across." Qi Taiguo said sternly, hands on his hips, to the person beside him: "Go get the county’s mayor, and arrange for boats."
"Yes!"
Qi Taiguo pressed his lips together and suddenly heard someone shouting not far away.
"Look, the house is collapsing, run quickly!"
He immediately turned to look, and under the dark sky, he could see a house slowly tilting and then, with a crash, it collapsed.
Qi Taiguo’s expression changed, and he quickly descended from the high ground, saying in a deep voice: "Let’s go, save the people first."
Everyone rushed toward that direction.
At dawn, Qi Taiguo looked at the body covered with a white cloth, from head to toe, and then at the middle part, he suddenly turned away, tightly clenched his hands at his sides.
It was a pregnant woman, her belly as big as Cheng Su’s. But because of the inconvenience of movement, she couldn’t run fast enough and got buried.
"Deputy Battalion Commander." Cheng Jiasheng came over, saw the expression on his face, glanced at the man crying holding the body not far away, and looked away, saying: "The boat is ready, we can depart at any time."
Qi Taiguo nodded, puffing out his chest, saying: "Everyone gather, get your equipment, let’s go."
"Yes."
While Cheng Jiasheng organized, Qi Taiguo also took large strides forward, took a couple of steps, and then paused.
He walked up to the man in mourning, and with a heavy hand, pressed on the man’s shoulder, saying: "Condolences." After a pause, he added: "I’m sorry!"
I’m sorry for not being able to save her, and your child.
The man’s crying paused for a moment, and then it grew louder.
Qi Taiguo strode away.
The dead were gone; the living must be strong. Before natural disasters, people are like ants, and he sympathized with those affected. Ahead, many people were still waiting for him and his comrades to rescue.
As long as he was a soldier, he couldn’t stop moving.
Qi Taiguo sat on a diesel boat made from simple rafts, watching the shore grow distant. He looked eastward; although it should have been time for the sun to rise, it was still dark, suffocatingly dark.
