Back to the 70s: My Childhood Sweetheart Spoils Me Rotten-Chapter 66 - 65: Thoughts of a Foodie (Second Update)
Chapter 66: Chapter 65: Thoughts of a Foodie (Second Update)
"Are these sheep?"
"And there’s a lamb?"
"Why do the sheep all look different?"
When a certain someone who disappeared early in the morning returned, they brought a huge surprise for everyone. Zhao Guangran was particularly excited, while Zhao Xuran was left feeling all kinds of helpless.
Zhao Xuran was dumbfounded looking at several new members following their dad home.
Zhao Guangran really didn’t understand. Yesterday, they brought home quails, which was known beforehand, just not the exact date they’d arrive.
Now, there are a few more sheep. This was entirely unexpected. Sheep eat grass, and their family has never raised sheep before, so they wouldn’t have prepared grass or anything like that.
If they had planned to raise sheep in September, Zhao Xuran would have gathered more grass to dry. But now with no preparations, and thick snow outside, even any grass that hasn’t frozen is buried under the heavy snowfall.
Gong Ruini had come to deeply understand Zhao Gang’s efficiency. They discussed it just yesterday, and today, he’s already brought home the goats and sheep. His speed is undeniably impressive.
If it weren’t for the discussion yesterday about how many sheep to raise and their breeds, Gong Ruini would have thought Zhao Gang had this all planned long ago.
One has to admit Zhao Gang is pretty amazing. He found three goats, and one clearly has a big belly and is about to give birth soon. Is this a two-for-one deal?
Typically, animals about to give birth wouldn’t be sold, so Zhao Gang must have some exceptional connections.
Zhao Xuran was quite stressed, finally understanding why his brother was so unreliable.
The reason is that his brother is particularly like their dad. "Dad, what do you intend to do with these sheep?"
"We can’t just let these sheep starve."
"Besides, we don’t even have space at home to raise sheep."
An excited Zhao Guangran, playing joyfully with the sheep, found Zhao Xuran’s words very strange. "Aren’t they for eating?"
Earlier, Zhao Guangran’s excitement was definitely about envisioning plates of roasted lamb ribs, braised lamb, and lamb soup. The flavors were all incredibly appealing.
For Zhao Guangran, it was all meat. It was meat!
But since his big brother said so, these sheep must be for raising, which complicates things a bit.
"Eat them, but we’ll eat them in a few days." The eldest son worries about so much, while the youngest is always finding ways to eat meat. Why does this kid eat so little? It’s beyond understanding.
"And the goats are for milk. They’ll give birth soon, and by next spring, you’ll need to take them up the mountain." Hmph, the little one wants to eat lamb, so let him do more work.
"What? So many sheep, but we’re only eating one?" Zhao Guangran looked at Zhao Gang with a lot of doubt, feeling that’s a bit too stingy.
Gong Ruini felt the same way. Clearly, they brought back seven sheep, so why only eat one?
"They’re for breeding and having lambs. All you think about is eating. By next winter, we’ll have more sheep." Not eating this year doesn’t mean there won’t be plenty to eat next year.
Zhao Gang outlined a grand vision for the kids, "As long as you guys work hard now, you won’t be short-changed later."
"And next year you’ll be able to make new cotton clothes." No cotton? No problem. We have wool-bearing sheep. Once the wool is processed, can’t that serve as cotton?
Zhao Gang initially thought they had to slaughter the sheep to get the wool, but he learned from the shepherd that sheep can be sheared in the summer, which helps the wool grow back and increases income.
Apparently, the wool can be sold to the supply and marketing cooperative. Such income is insignificant to Zhao Gang, as the family lacks cotton.
Zhao Gang hadn’t considered growing cotton, but the key issue was the lack of seeds. What to do?
Now that there’s a substitute, he definitely wouldn’t let it slip by.
New cotton clothes? Gong Ruini felt a burst of joy. "Mom, save me some fabric so I can have new clothes for the New Year."
These are the times when wearing new clothes only happens during New Year, and it feels so bitter for Gong Ruini.
Thankfully, Gong Ruini didn’t speak this thought out loud. Otherwise, she would’ve stirred up jealousy, knowing that even during Chinese New Year, many people don’t have new clothes; there are plenty of such instances.
"Alright, alright." Cai Meina was filled with enthusiasm. Who would complain about having too few cotton-padded clothes? Moreover, making several more blankets could work, even if there’s a kang, reducing the need for blankets.
But as soon as the kids separate, the demand for blankets will increase. And when the men go out, they need to stay warm, all of which requires cotton.
"We’ll set up a pen and raise more wool-bearing sheep. Wool is good stuff." Zhan Jing had previously contemplated raising sheep, but they lacked manpower and worried that her youngest son might blab about their incentives.
Now that the house has playmates and Gong Ruini as a role model, Zhan Jing was confident her foolish son wouldn’t make such mistakes.
"You’ll earn work credits for doing a good job." Zhan Jing agreed with what Ni Zi and the others mentioned; more work done well would earn more money, or there would be no motivation.
"Got it." Zhao Guangran, hearing about the money, was thrilled, "But this pay isn’t related to eating meat, right?"
Zhao Guangran was worried about being denied meat later, with someone saying you can’t eat meat after earning money. That would make him cry to death.
"Already thinking about getting paid and eating meat before starting the work." Zhao Xuran slapped Zhao Guangran away unceremoniously.
"Mom, don’t spoil this kid, make him work harder. He’s going to be just a sandwich board later." Zhao Xuran was quite dissatisfied with his lazy and gluttonous brother.
If Zhan Jing hadn’t had more children, Zhao Xuran might have put up with it, but ever since the Gong Family siblings arrived, Zhao Xuran couldn’t bear how incompetent his foolish brother was.
The term "sandwich board" seems all too accurate, often said that middle children are neglected, but can Zhao Guangran truly be ignored by the Zhao Family?
Gong Ruini observed the gesturing Zhao Guangran, discussing with Zhao Xuran whether he was the sandwich board, and thought that making the Zhao Family ignore him would be extremely difficult.
Gong Ruini wondered if Zhao Guangran would become suppressed by an older brother and potential younger siblings, but that depended on them being capable enough.
With someone like Zhao Guangran as an example, Gong Ruini figured Zhao Xuran wouldn’t want another foolish sibling.
From Zhao Xuran’s perspective, Gong Ruini also didn’t want two more silly brothers, or she’d be exhausted dealing with mischievous kids while sharing living space.
Zhao Guangran was feeling anxious, having worried about becoming an older brother and losing the status of the family’s youngest treasure, wondering about his future position.
Previously, Zhao Guangran thought his position would suffer due to Gong Ruini’s arrival, but now he realized it was due to him becoming an older brother, causing his status to plummet.
On the brink of becoming an older brother, he suddenly didn’t want his mother to give birth. What should he do? Waiting online for advice.
While Zhao Guangran regretted the anticipation of being an older brother, Gong Ruini thought about persuading Cai Meina to have another sibling, to even the score against the Zhao brothers.
Gong Ruini wanted to talk to Cai Meina about her strong desire to become an elder sister, hoping for a younger sibling.
