Chapter 41: Summoners getting a Suitable Weapon

Reaching the shelves of weaponry, all the students who had been in a hurry moments earlier suddenly went still. The once chaotic scene calmed in an instant. The reason was simple—choosing a weapon wasn’t something that could be rushed. It was a decision that could shape their entire journey at the academy... or even decide their fate in battle.

Some students immediately began scanning the weapons meticulously, analyzing their design, length, and weight. Many compared them to the abilities of their summons, already calculating how integration might enhance their combat prowess. Others seemed to make their decisions based solely on appearance—picking weapons that looked dangerous or flashy, then walking off with a gleam of confidence in their eyes.

For some, the decision was tough. But there were also a few who moved with certainty. These were the ones who had experience with Core weapons long before entering the academy. Some even owned their own weapons already and only needed to find one that complemented what they were used to—a seamless transition.

Kairos, however, was lost.

He stood silently, unsure of what to pick. What kind of weapon could complement the abilities and features of his Shadow Wolf?

At first, he considered a sword. It seemed like the natural choice, elegant yet deadly. But the more he thought about it, the more hesitant he became. Learning how to properly wield a sword would take time—time he didn’t have. And even then, mastering its rhythm and syncing it with his summon’s style would be another challenge altogether.

"No," he whispered to himself. "Too much to learn, too little time."

He moved on.

Passing shelves filled with halberds, flails, maces, and other weapons he couldn’t even name, Kairos felt a strange sense of detachment. Nothing resonated. Nothing called to him.

Until—

His eyes landed on a pair of daggers. Intricately carved, with sharp, clean edges and elegant curves, they shimmered under the dim lighting. There was something about them that made his heart skip a beat. They reminded him of fangs... and the vicious claws of the Shadow Wolf.

’Could I probably use this weapon like that...?’

He reached out to grab one of the daggers, the thought forming stronger in his mind.

But then—

The Shadow Wolf stirred within him, growling low, its voice curling into his thoughts like dark smoke.

[Don’t pick that weapon... it smells like a cat. It’s useless.]

Kairos froze.

’Smells like a cat?’ he thought. ’What does that even mean?’

He didn’t understand what the Shadow Wolf sensed or how it judged the quality of a weapon by its scent. Was it made from a beast cat? Regardless, there seemed to be a deep dislike from his summon. And if the Shadow Wolf didn’t like it... then it likely wouldn’t complement his integration either.

He sighed and pulled his hand back, reluctantly turning his gaze from the weapon and scanning the next rack.

At this point, nearly half the students had already chosen their weapons and begun testing them. Meanwhile, Kairos continued searching. Each time he tried to test a weapon—any weapon—the Shadow Wolf would growl, criticizing the shape, the balance, or most oddly, the scent.

It became increasingly frustrating. Was the Shadow Wolf just being picky, or did it genuinely have insight beyond his understanding?

Then—

"I smell it... Turn around, Master."

Kairos paused mid-step. The tone of the Shadow Wolf’s voice was different this time. Excited. Eager.

He turned, slowly, and found himself facing another rack he hadn’t noticed before.

His eyes scanned each row until—

There.

A dark pair of gauntlets sat near the center, surrounded by dust as if they’d been untouched for a long time. They were jagged in design and thick in material, built more for destruction than defense. They looked heavy—too heavy for someone like him. Kairos was skinny, barely muscular. Could he even lift them?

But something stirred in him. A quiet resonance. Like puzzle pieces finally aligning.

The Shadow Wolf wagged its tail joyfully, its form flickering in the back of his mind like a dancing flame.

He reached out, uncertain... but hopeful.

To his surprise, the gauntlets were light—deceptively light. As if made for him.

He slipped them on.

[You have successfully equipped Dark Gauntlet. This will help you to better control your Shadow Wolf’s abilities.]

Kairos’s eyes widened as the system voice echoed in his mind.

[Gauntlets Abilities: Dark Wave Toss, Extra Mana Points, and Strength Addition.]

[Material Grade: Low.]

Despite the low-grade material, the features were impressive. The gauntlets felt right—natural, like an extension of his body.

Flexing his fingers, Kairos discovered something even more incredible: he could summon claws from the tips of each finger and retract them at will. That alone made them feel like they had been made specifically for him and his summon.

A grin slowly crept onto his lips.

Darnell, suddenly appeared beside him, practically beaming with pride as he held up a short sword.

"This is it," Darnell said quickly. "It’s going to help me move fast and finish off enemies clean. Matches my summon perfectly."

Kairos nodded with quiet approval.

Soon, Sergeant Lloyd’s voice echoed across the room.

"Line up, everyone. Weapons in hand."

The inspection began.

Sergeant Lloyd took his time with each student, examining their chosen weapon carefully. He offered bits of advice, then explained one critical detail:

"You’ll have to discover how to activate your weapon’s abilities yourself. No one can teach you that. But once you do, mastering it becomes easy."

Finally, he reached Kairos.

The moment Lloyd laid eyes on the gauntlets, he paused. Then a subtle smirk formed on his lips.

"You must really like close-range battles to pick gauntlets," he said, voice gruff. "Dangerous choice. If you’re not fast enough to dodge or strong enough to land a fatal hit... well, let’s just say most who use them lose a hand or two."

Kairos nodded respectfully.

"This is the best I can use. And in the limited time I have to learn, this is my best option."

Lloyd’s smile widened, though he said nothing more. As he turned to the next student, a quiet chuckle escaped him.

’Nice pick. Good material... but I hope he knows what he’s doing. Hehehe...’

Once the inspections were over, Sergeant Lloyd climbed back to his platform and addressed the group.

"Listen closely. The Core weapon you’ve taken is now your responsibility. If it gets damaged or destroyed, you’ll have to pay for repairs using your earned cores from hunts or your private funds."

A nervous murmur spread across the students.

The stakes had just become much higher. It wasn’t just about surviving themselves. It was about preserving their weapons too. Fighting beasts wasn’t their only worry now.

But Kairos didn’t feel nervous. freeweɓnovēl.coɱ

He felt ready.

With this Core weapon—this gauntlet—he would earn his way forward. He would gather beast cores. Grow stronger. And someday soon, craft a Core weapon of his own.
