Chapter 133: Friend? No!

"All packed?"

"Yes," Helena answered Vernon.

"Called everyone you should? You know there won’t be any signals there, right?" Vernon asked again.

"Yes, I did. All the calls were done. I informed them not to disturb me for the next week as well." Helena pouted as she replied. He asked so many questions already, and she was fed up.

She never knew Vernon had the ability to nag like a mom before.

Vernon’s lips twitched when he heard her thoughts. He wasn’t her mom. But he was careful, alright?

He raised his hand and knocked on her head hard.

"Ahh! What’s that for?" Helena rubbed her head and asked him.

"It’s for calling me mom," Vernon said.

"What? When did I call you mom?" [How did he know what I thought? I am sure I didn’t say that out loud, right?]

Vernon realized his mistake immediately. He had completely forgotten about hearing Helena’s thoughts and reacted subconsciously.

"Do you have to say it out loud? Your face clearly shows what you are thinking, alright?" Vernon clicked his tongue and flicked his fingers on her forehead.

Helena pouted while rubbing her forehead this time. She clearly accepted his reason, and Vernon secretly heaved a sigh of relief.

Vernon’s phone rang suddenly. Helena’s lips immediately curved into a sneer. "You have been talking to me about calls all this time. Look who had yet to take care of his calls at this moment."

Clearly, she was looking down on him, and Vernon’s lips twitched. He had no words to retort.

"Who is it that made me lose face for no reason?" He muttered under his breath and looked at the caller ID on his phone screen.

Helena snickered when she heard her words.

Vernon glared at her before he saw the name on the screen. As soon as his eyes fell on the name, he froze.

"What happened? Who is it?" Helena asked in concern when she saw his reaction.

Vernon looked at her and then at the phone and slowly replied, "Ethan."

Helena’s tensed muscles relaxed instantly, and she smiled as she looked at him and asked, "It’s just Ethan. Why did you react like it was some mortal enemy of yours?"

Vernon blinked his eyes. Yes, it’s just Ethan. He had completely forgotten that his friendship with Ethan had not gone wrong in this life yet. They are still friends.

"Yeah. We are friends." He said as if to remind himself of the fact.

Ethan was none other than the friend who spoke badly about Helena in his previous life regarding his sister-in-law’s kidnapping incident.

He said that Helena had planned with the Seventh Prince against Jemma and kidnapped her.

Vernon, of course, did not trust his words and punched him until he bled before breaking their friendship.

In his last life, it was around this time that it had happened.

At that time, they met at the hospital after Jemma was found. But why is he calling now?

Vernon had a few doubts. He did not trust this man as his friend anymore. So, unlike Helena, who knows nothing about the ’grudge’ between the two, he couldn’t face the man with a good face.

He frowned, not exactly wanting to answer the phone.

Helena was the one who pushed him, "What are you doing, standing in a daze? Answer the call. He should have something important to call you at this time."

Vernon nodded and swiped the screen to answer the call.

Helena wanted to take a few steps away from him to give the two friends some privacy to talk.

But before she could take a step, Vernon stopped her by her hand and pulled her closer.

She raised her eyebrows and mouthed at him in confusion, ’What?’

Vernon used his hand to gesture to her to stay and mouthed back, ’Stay.’

[Am I a dog?] Her lips twitched at his wording choice, but still she stood beside him obediently without fighting. If he asked her to stay, he should have a reason.

"Ethan? What is it?" He spoke to the phone before he switched the speaker on so that Helena could hear what he would say as well.

Helena frowned as she did not know why he did that but she calmly looked at the phone, waiting to hear what Ethan would say.

"Vernon. Dear friend, I heard that something happened in your home? A kidnapping, nonetheless? I was worried about you and called you to ask how you are dealing with it," Ethan’s ’caring’ voice was heard through the phone.

The young couple frowned in unison when they heard his words.

"Kidnap?" Vernon raised an eyebrow and asked.

His lips even curved into a smirk when he asked that.

Helena, on the other hand, was even more confused by this reaction from him.

Jemma’s sister’s kidnapping was kept a secret from everyone. No one knows about such a thing happening in their family.

Helena’s father did not know, despite being a closer relative now. How could an outsider like Ethan know about it?

No matter how she looked at it, the matter was suspicious.

She couldn’t understand what made Vernon amused by this.

What she didn’t know was, her doubt was what he thought as well, and that was also the reason he felt amused by this matter.

In his previous life, when Ethan came to him and talked about Jemma’s kidnapping, he did not think much. He punched him and kicked him just because he tried to frame Helena using baseless accusations.

Everyone knows about Jemma’s kidnapping at that time. She was the daughter-in-law of the Jeffery family, and Vincent flipped the entire city and more in search of her.

If someone doesn’t know about the kidnapping, then it would be weird. That was why Vernon did not think anything more about Ethan’s words at that time, except for the anger on his wife’s behalf.

But the case in this life was completely different.

Jemma’s sister was a complete nobody. Yes, no one knows about her. If not for her relationship with Jemma, who would care about her?

So the news of her kidnapping wasn’t spread. Instead, it was kept in the wraps so that it wouldn’t affect the Jeffery family too much.

Also, with Merlin’s help and Vernon’s knowledge from the past life, there was no need to ’flip the city’ like they did in his last life.

So, how did Ethan get to know about this matter?

Also, he called him, not Vincent, to show his ’sympathy’ and ’concern’? If it were Jemma, then it would be fine. After all, everyone knows that the relationship between Vernon and his sister-in-law was as tight as a pair of siblings. But that wasn’t the case between him and Jemma’s sister.

Who would call him about this matter, unless they...

His mind ran, unlike ever before.

He wanted to see what Ethan’s plan was this time.

Thankfully, he did not believe him in his last life. Otherwise, the crack it could have created between him and his wife at that time would have been too huge.

Yes, their relationship wasn’t that great in his last life. But that wasn’t the case from the start. It only started to change after a few years of a very happy marriage between them. Even though he did not really know what and why it changed exactly, he at least knew that there weren’t any problems in the first few years of their marriage. That, no one could deny.

Otherwise, Helena wouldn’t have said that there is a chance to get everything back to normal either.

"Yes. I heard that your sister-in-law was kidnapped. Did you find her? Do you have any clues? Or do you need any help from my side?" Ethan asked with ’concern’.

Vernon’s lips curved upwards when he heard his words, while Helena looked at him in confusion.

[What is this man talking about? When was Sister Jemma kidnapped? What fake information did he get, and from where did he get such ridiculous ideas? Wait! No! Vernon’s dream! Yes, didn’t that say that Sister Jemma would be kidnapped? Because of his dream, Brother Vincent made sure to keep Sister Jemma safe. But how did Ethan know about this? What is going on with him?]

Vernon looked at her expression and smiled. He raised his hand and gently patted her head. Helena looked at him in confusion, not stopping his action.

"Oh? Where did you hear that? I didn’t know someone who could give this information to you." Vernon said.

"What do you mean? Everyone knows this. How could I not?" Ethan did not think much and replied immediately.

"Oh? Everyone knows? But I didn’t know." Vernon sneered.

"What?" Ethan sounded shocked. Then he composed himself and asked again, "You didn’t know? How is that possible? Is your family keeping things away from you? I don’t think they would do that, right?"

Helena’s brows furrowed deeper as she continued hearing his words.

She looked at Vernon, not speaking.
