Chapter 109: Saved you

When I opened my eyes, all I saw was darkness. It rolled with a flash of green, and I couldn’t tell if it was reality or a dream before I knew no more.

The next time I opened my eyes, though, I was staring at a white ceiling. I blinked slowly; I was in a grey-painted room, lying on a soft bed.

I sat up and opened my mouth to speak, but my throat was too dry to bring out sound; I frowned and flopped back on the bed. ’Why do I have to faint and lose consciousness after every major fight?’

’I have to stop doing that, or it might become a habit, and it’ll be my death next time.’ I sighed silently to myself and then closed my eyes and focused on my connection to my monsters. 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚

They are right, but they are also just regaining their strength. Hermit and the Onus sent a sensation of hunger through their links, and my stomach grumbled. I assured them that I’ll feed them with monster core once I’m able to get up.

The door opening alerted me and my eyes snapped open. Temur filled the doorway with his bulk and he carried a large tray in his hand. "Wow, the healer was right. He said you’ll be away today during this time."

I rolled my eyes and waited until Temur gave me water to drink before I attempted to speak. "Ah..mm...you are awake! Why’s it that I’m the only one that usually loses consciousness?"

Temur raised his brows. "We also lost it..for all the difficult life and death fight anyway. But I’m a warrior with a warrior’s body, it’s only natural that I wake before you."

I grumbled, but I couldn’t disagree with that; my power is Necromancy, which is the same as mages. Their bodies aren’t built like those of warriors. I cleared my throat. "You’re not looking too well yourself."

Temur winced and gestured to his bandaged head. "I used the mask. The healer said I have to let my head naturally heal by itself. I have a massive headache."

I check myself, apart from the natural weakness of not having much mana in my reserve, I’m well and okay. "Too bad, but what’s with all this food?"

"It’s yours. You’ve been asleep for three days, I imagine you’d have worked up an appetite." Temur made all of it.

I sniffed and my stomach let out a loud yowl like the cry of an angry, starving cat. "You have no Idea!"

One way to describe the way I ate was– messy. I used both hands, any thought of plans or decency driven away by the need to fill my stomach.

Finally, I drank a cup full of water and let out a loud, long belch. "Ah! You’ve outdone yourself again, Temur. Thank you."

"It’s nothing; it kept me busy while I waited for you to wake up, and cooking helps me iron out my thoughts. It calms me, just like training does." He smiled softly.

The silence that descended next was filled with all the things we wanted to say and hesitated to say. Finally, I couldn’t handle it anymore. "How did I survive? I thought for sure I was dead."

"Cormac saved you. He saved me as well and we were able to take him with us. I thought he wouldn’t come, but I was surprised to find him when I opened my eyes yesterday."

"So where is Litha?" I asked, forcing brightness into my voice. "We’ve learned where she is right?"

Temur hesitated. "We haven’t. The bastard isn’t talking, even with all the threats. And the Tower Guards are trying to take over the case. Arkin’s mind is simply impressive; even truth serums won’t work on him...well, the one that Thayer was able to get., They are one of the rarest in...."

"Temur," I began. "Have you tried torturing him? I mean, it’s not something I like, but the guy might talk if we.. "

Temur huffed. "He’s psycho; he’s already harmed his body to the extent that his body converts pain to pleasure. I’ve never seen that kind of thing before."

That worried me. ’They need to get information about Litha’s location so they can stage a proper rescue and quickly too because who knows what that blood Necromancy can do?’

We talked more about how to go about the whole situation, and then Temur excused himself so I could change. As I bath and washed myself, an idea began to bloom in my mind. Arkin right? They’ll see about that.

When I went downstairs I wasn’t surprised when I saw everyone gathered at the table. The atmosphere was a bit of cool tension.

Thayer sat at the head of the table his eyes hardened as he stared at a woman that I didn’t know about. The teammates sat beside him, and then there was Temur munching on a snack in front of him.

Cormac was the first to see me and he raised his brows because I wasn’t dressed casually. I wore black clothes of hardened materials, light armor is one way to look at it.

I bowed toward the man. "Thank you for saving me, Cormac."

He grunted and waved. "That’s what I was paid to do; you don’t have to thank me unless you want to pay me more, that is."

Thayer cleared his throat. "Torvan...."

I bowed to him as well. "Thank you, Thayer. I won’t forget."

I turned towards the woman. "I’ve not seen you before, but somehow I’ve seen you in passing. And it seems you are not well-liked in this room."

Her chuckle turned into full-blown laughter. "Oh! I like you! I’m a spy, and I’m also one of the people who saved your friend’s life. You’re welcome but you can do one better and give me the cult member."

I winced. ’If she’s a spy and I’ve seen her in passing before, it can only mean one thing...’ "You are from Captain Ryker, he sent you with us when going."
